This place is constantly shilling Linux, decrying LLMs, and downvoting anything that doesn’t fit the status quo.

Don’t get me wrong I like this place on the whole, but I’ve just come to realise nobody here actually wants to engage with anybody different and just dog piles.

We are the left wing version of r/conservative.

I think the people here is not “only pro-Linux” but pro-OS-freedom. I guess most off us wouldn’t find a problem if someone changes Windows or MacOS for *BSD, Haiku or any other free OS.

About LLM, the problem is not the tool but the use the big businesses are using it for. Because the target is not having humans working there and do everything with LLM and androids so they don’t have to “spend money” on wages.

So brave of you to stand up to left wing people dismantling your arguments!

…but yes people aren’t interested in your desire to “both sides” reality by dropping out necessary context until the picture looks like two sides having a friendly disagreement… because the reality is conservatives WANT to hurt us and for some reason people are mad about that here.

Ubuntu is fine. I do understand the hate, though. Snap is contentious for very good reasons, Canonical makes major decisions by fiat rather than listening to the community (see Snap again), and they have corporate motives that are often at odds with the spirit and desires of the greater FOSS community (like forking upstream projects instead of contributing).

Mint is still based on Ubuntu, for example, but I feel it’s a more ethical suggestion than Ubuntu itself.

I started with pop os 5 years ago and haven’t found a reason to change. I’m not hugely techy and just wanted something to play games on. Had very few issues overall.

Sorry to sound absolutely dumb, but does it work well with things like steam?

I primarily only use Adobe (learning Affinity) and Steam. I’m a pretty basic bitch ngl lmao! Pop_OS looks CLEAN on their website

It’s not on the list, but I’ve been rocking the same KDE fedora installation through about ten version upgrades. Once you dial in your settings and software choices, it’s fairly solid.

The only issue I can recall was some weirdness with steam’s dependencies blocking my last version upgrade, but it was easily bypassed.

Pop!_OS is my top recommendation for Windows expats, followed by Mint (Cinnamon Edition), and then Bazzite (KDE Plasma desktop). Bazzite is so, so, so good, but it has some unique features that make it a little more frustrating for Windows power users who are new to Linux. But honestly they are all good. Pick one, and if you aren’t vibing with it, try something else.

Also, keep in mind that “distro” and “desktop environment (DTE)” are two different things. Sometimes a distro has a default DTE and sometimes it gives you a choice. The DTE makes the biggest difference to your experience. There are many different DTEs, but the two biggest are GNOME (MacOS-like and moderately customizable) and KDE Plasma (Windows-like by default, but very customizable).

I cannot recommend Bazzite. It’s an atomic distribution, which is pioneer tech that tries to make some things better but in effect makes a lot of things more difficult. FWIW, I’ve been using Linux for 20+ years.

Just go with regular Fedora KDE Desktop. https://fedoraproject.org/kde/

        1. Disable secureboot so you don’t have to run a few commands and restart in order to sign keys
        2. Ensure your drives are formatted to a linux format to reduce headaches with steam libraries
        3. if the command starts with “sudo(superuser Do)” it’s time to read up on what each part of the command does exactly.
        4. Linux wants you to mount and unmount your drives(filesystems) manually. Plugging them in won’t instantly allow data transfer.
        5. Don’t be surprised that almost any linux is a perfectly functional OS with fantastic UX and less day to day hassle and management compared to windows.

Stay away from HP. Secureboot will re-enable itself whenever it wants, and the kernel panic is scary if you don’t realize that’s what’s happening.

          Also…

          1. everything is changeable. But not everything should be changed.
          2. There will come a time when you need to interact with the command line. This is expected, and no you did not do something wrong.
          3. Have fun.

Oh if your looking for a distro? Mint is a great entry point (and even can support crusty old graybeards as well).

Try just telling someone that they need to switch to Linux with no other details. They’ll either get confused/overwhelmed by choice, or possibly choose one that isn’t user friendly and hate it.

People have to start somewhere, and I see no issue with recommending user friendly distros to get them going.

I find that’s very unhelpful to potential Linux converts. They will quickly find out that there are infinite flavors of Linux, become overwhelmed, and give up.

When you are introducing newcomers to Linux, it’s best to make specific suggestions.

How many recruiter screens are you getting? If you are getting a decent amount, your resume is likely good.

If you are failing recruiter screens, you are saying or doing something that is turning them off.

I would see if you can get feedback or have a friend “screen” you.

There are some services or organizations for mock interviews. Utilize them!

Oh, and the thought of moving somewhere cheaper? Forget about it. It’s “not good enough” for them.

It kinda sounds like you’re shaming people simply for spending their money on entertainment, food or better living conditions. That kind of take can come off like saying, “you’re poor, so you don’t deserve to enjoy anything.”

I get that there are alternatives like pirating, but that doesn’t really solve the bigger issue: we shouldn’t have to resort to that in the first place.

No, it’s not “all or nothing.” You people keep pretending that’s what I’m arguing for because you don’t want to acknowledge your own contribution to the problem. The person I was replying was trying to argue ‘survival,’ and now here you are moving the goalposts to ‘wants.’

They keep conflating needs with wants, so whoever takes their wants away is immediately a bad person.

They don’t need more money. As soon as they get more, they’re going to spend more on more dumb shit while there are still starving children on the planet.

but that doesn’t really solve the bigger issue

It does if enough people do it.

we shouldn’t have to resort to that in the first place.

You make some good points and I see where you’re coming from, but I think that person used the term “survive” figuratively. Even so, when you say the world is not perfect you’re kind of oversimplifying the situation by making it seem like things are the way they are because of some unfortunate event no one can control, when in reality things are designed to be harder for people with less money, and I’ll try to use your own examples to show that.

Streaming: Remember when we only had Netflix and it had a full extensive catalog, no ads and was much more affordable? Then studios started splitting content just to make more profit, and now every year we pay more to get less content. Even basic plans with ads are going up. You mentioned pirating, but that’s not exactly easy or accessible for everyone, not to mention it’s a legal gray area (which is another discussion on its own).

Delivery: Sure, no one needs to order takeout, but even cooking at home is getting expensive, especially if you want to eat healthy. If you’re trying to save money you basically have to buy stuff loaded with sugar and fat or use shit ingredients, it’s like they’re trying to slowly kill us.

Living: let’s not pretend there’s not a housing crisis going on for a while, where people with money are buying up everything just to rent it back out to other people with money. Meanwhile everyone else is getting pushed to unsafe areas with poor living conditions.

(Also, just saying, that whole “fuck you” attitude of yours doesn’t really help with anything.)

Streaming: Remember when we only had Netflix and it had a full extensive catalog, no ads and was much more affordable?

Yes, but even then I never subscribed to netflix because free streaming sites had more content for free. They still do. You really have no idea how disconnected you are from people who legitimately need more money and scrutinize everything they spend it on. It’s called privilege.

Delivery: Sure, no one needs to order takeout, but even cooking at home is getting expensive

Wait… what? You’re saying it’s getting expensive to cook at home, so the solution is to spend more money on delivery? Is this satire?

If you’re trying to save money you basically have to buy stuff loaded with sugar and fat or use shit ingredients

What the fuck? Are you seriously suggesting that it’s better to get doordash because eating at home is “too expensive and unhealthy”?

Living: let’s not pretend there’s not a housing crisis going on for a while

That’s because people have been conditioned to rent instead of own. Most of the people complaining about housing are living above their means and think they deserve more before people who have less. For example, I guarantee most of the people on these forums complains about not having enough money while spending $1,000+/month on rent in a major city.

They could live more modest lives in more rural areas, but “that’s not good enough for them.” Saying “there are no jobs” is a load of bullshit and I guarantee none of them are talking from experience.

(Also, just saying, that whole “fuck you” attitude of yours doesn’t really help with anything.)

I’m holding people accountable for their contributions to the problem. They want to consume guilt-free and get mad at anyone who calls it out.

I don’t expect them to change no matter what. It would take an act of god to beat the consumerism out of this generation.

I’ll shame someone for using door dash. No able bodied person deserves servants to both cook for them and deliver hot food to them from across town. That is an incredible privilege that should be reserved for those truly in need or as an expense luxury.

At the very least form unions. That will help with stuff like wage theft, some people getting underpaid, BS firings, etc.

More aggressively, maybe some sort of collective ownership. Not this “options” bullshit where they never even vest for most people. The whole thing where management pays you $100 and sells what you made for $3000 needs to go. That $3000 needs to be more fairly shared among the people that made it happen.

But I don’t really know. I’m just some guy with entry level knowledge and a sense that the current system is wrong.

The billionaires need labor to not organize against them. If labor organized, they’d be screwed. Luckily for them you exist. The billionaires are safe as long as they can keep you doing what you’re doing now, which is try to divide labor into groups of “us” vs “them”. Anything that generates friction and hinders organizing is a win for them. I invite you to help work towards a solution, there is always room for more help. There are apparently 6,000 more people who are going to be motivated and have a bit of extra time on their hands. Maybe they can help too.

One objective is to reduce layers of management, the spokesperson said. In January Amazon announced that it was getting rid of some employees after noticing “unnecessary layers” in its organization.

Sucks for those that lost their jobs, but this sounds promising. Layer after layer of management slows everything down. It turns a 1 glue task into a 3 month crawl of endless meetings and back and forth and waiting.

The problem with companies like Microsoft is that they’ve become completely pointless. They don’t innovate anymore. They don’t make anything useful. If you make Microsoft more efficient, they’ll just suck ass more efficiently.

Just because it’s not marketed at you doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

I interact with the development ecosystem that Microsoft largely controls. They’re constantly doing new stuff there.

The problem is that they’re too fucking big. Office used to be the shining star of Microsoft, but now, it’s a total piece of shit. My company recently switched from Google to Microsoft, and holy shit, it’s a downgrade.

Outlook is the biggest pile of shit software I’ve encountered in years. It’s eventually consistent but without user feedback, it’s very slow, meeting rooms aren’t consistent about meeting room responses, email filtering rules don’t work reliably… I could go on.

Word sucks, too. Google Docs is way easier to use. In Word, copy and paste doesn’t work as you’d expect, even from Word doc to Word doc, there’s no templating in OneDrive, there aren’t shared folders unless you set up a whole SharePoint site… I could go on here, too.

It’s this stupid, stupid focus on AI tools. AI ain’t making shit better! AI shouldn’t replace humans or things humans work on: it should augment humans. Products still need development on UX. AI should be incorporated into UX without being shoved down our throats. But these dumbass investors who don’t understand tech are jumping on the fucking bandwagon, and execs are towing the line.

Sorry for the rant, but Microsoft is more than just development tools.

Also, they need to get ads out of my fucking operating system. I don’t want my operating system natively communicating with the internet and recommending news stories. Fucking cancer

You must not use many. The many Microsoft programs I use every day have only gotten better over time - windows, SQL management studio, visual studio, visual studio code, windows terminal, WSL, Azure storage explorer, To Do, Office, and even the much maligned Teams has improved significantly.

They are literally useless. even when something is explained to them they still mess it up, or need the same thing explained again the next time. Most of the commits they have was someone wasting their time to explain change by change how to do it. It would have been worth the time investment if they learned and were able to do things on their own. at this point but they aren’t and freeing up the people who have to consistently spend their time helping them will be a net positive in productivity.

The only teal obstacle is some anti cheat software, mostly kernel level anti cheat.

So if you want to play shooters like fortnite, pubg, valorant or rainbow six siege, you are out of luck.

Lutris and steam do most of the heavy lifting for you. Driver side should work with no fiddling required for AMD atleast, somebody with Nvidia can chime in if it’s the same for them too.

You may need to add a couple Launch options for certain games on steam here and there or swap proton versions.

Games do sometimes break but then you wait a day or two and it’s usually fixed.

Question is what games are you playing? If it’s CoD and Fortnite I’d say stick with Windows, they won’t work.

For the cohort sure but telling a man who need a job to form a union is useless. He needs a job in his field ideally for the same or better comp.

The issue now is that there appears to be an aggressive wage suppression campaign against software developers as result of domestic over supply due to decade old shill campaign along with super aggressive offshoring since covid. Unionizing under these conditions are nearly impossible imho they have unionized when they had market power.
