@Mika@sopuli.xyz !lemmyshitpost@lemmy.world I’m Brazilian and oftentimes the “All” feed across the entire Lemmy ecosystem feels, in fact, like a smoothie mashup between European-specific political issues and USian-specific political issues, so, when it comes to the phenomenon that the European Fedizens feel on Lemmy, not only we feel the same, but we, Fedizens from the Global South, we feel it twice!
At least when it comes to sport, we speak one language
@wieson@feddit.org Well, I’m not really into sports (I’m far detached from the stereotypical Brazilian who likes to watch Corinthians x Palmeiras/Flamengo x Fluminense/etc at Fridays while they’re gathering with their friends in a bar while drinking cachaça, I’m more of a nerdy and friendless person), but indeed, soccer/football is definitely part of a cultural aspect shared among European countries (especially Germany, Portugal and Spain, as far as I know) and Brazil (as well as other South American countries, such as Argentina).
And I’m far detached from stereotypical Indian who likes to watch cricket and bollywood/local movies.
I guess lemmy has a self-selection bias.
Okay but how do you feel about kabaddi?
Football.
Touchdown!
Ouch.
Maybe the problem is that in Europe our news are mostly in local languages. So, if I post something I would need to translate. Or one would need to share something from France24 (English), BBC, Euronews (English), etc. But, the content is not as comprehensive as the national newspapers…
Hey now - I’m at least not there right now.
Source - just had espresso for €1
Let’s be the change :-)
Well sure. But that’s also because everyone else learned how to use English to communicate. So it FEELS like we’re all American. It’s a common thing in online spaces.
Maar als we allemaal terug zouden gaan naar onze eigen taal, voelt het hier een stuk minder Amerikaans.
I’ve literally had lengthy English conversations with other Dutch people online where we only figured out we were both Dutch twenty comments later :D
That’s not the issue. The issue is stuff like !politics@lemmy.world which explicitly forbids world politics. It’s an US politics only community.
Wow you’re right, didn’t realise that was explicit before.
Feels pretty selfish of them to do that on lemmy.world
Oh, and they ban you if you ask for the community to be opened to world politics.
Hey, some of us just want to have the biggest instance so we don’t have to rely on people subscribing to things. (Australia, I have 2 accounts)
These are my current muted words, got more on my mastodon account
Why do you hate iOS programming language?
wait you can mute words on lemmy? that would be cool
I checked the main default Lemmy UI does not have filters. But my mobile Lemmy client (Eternity) do have.
>US News — Midwest.social
>look inside
>it’s Russians
Was just permabanned from Ask Lemmy for explaining Russian and Chinese bots (bots are slaves). FYI did you know it’s totally okay for Russia and China to have slaves and engage in expansionism and election interference? Slaves are TOTALLY COOL and fine if they are Russian or Chinese, even if that means Russia or China expands into new territories and enslaves new people👍 Disliking slavery and war makes me a US propaganda shill somehow, even though the US is also explicitly pro-slavery (13th amendment) and pro-warfare and is operated by a Russian asset so all US propaganda these days IS Russian propaganda
Oh they actually specified “US”? Usually they just ramble on about the generic West.
They do not like it when we tell people that bots are slaves and Russia, China, and BRICS have massive slave networks of bots online. So they had to do a US whataboutism real fast
Yeah I can’t even interact with that, Davel has made sure to only participate in boards where he’s a mod, and I can’t interact with anything he posts / comments because he makes damn sure not to come over to neutral boards.
He’s a pathetic Russian pretending to be American
I kept on pointing that out and he retreated back to communities he mods and never steps foot outside. Coward.
I am the moderator now
Oh boy, wait until they find out about the World Series of anything.
There’s a beautiful sweet spot between the Americans going to bed and the Germans waking up where Its not US politics but I can still understand whats being said.
you want my several decades old stories about accidentally buying stickers with shaggy’s dick on them? it wasn’t in statesia but it might as well have been, let’s be honest
People use All?
Certainly mixes things up compared to Local.
I just go to my subscriptions. Then sort by scaled.
I do! I need to be more diligent about seeking out new communities and subscribing to them, but I’m an ALL sort kind of person at heart, I guess.
as a person on a smaller instance, yes i like actually seeing things
You are confusing seeing other instances with “ALL”. I just don’t want to see what I am not subscribed to. Curation of all this crap just makes it so much better. And focused for that matter.
what’re you on about? how precisely would i find communities on other instances without browsing ALL? i’m not gonna manually search for things…
i’m not gonna manually search for things…
OK you wont find things then. A lot of communities I like are not going to show up in ALL. I seek them out and sub to them. Why be so lazy, it only takes a few minutes? Or simply search for your interests.
I mean if what you are looking for is where people are the loudest and places that are the busiest then by all means stay looking at all.
Lemmy doesn’t have that many users and it also can have multiple subs that are the same category. So discovering those and choosing one, or both is up to you. Remember: there is no algorithm here, curation is up to you.
So precisely:
- use the reddit to Lemmy sub finder if you are coming from reddit
- search for things you are interested in using the community search - flyfishing for example.
- click “browse communities” and you will get a list of all of them, glance through them and check the box to sub
Not that hard.
Also, use Scaled as sort occasionally. It will let smaller subs rise to the top of you list.
I default to Subscribed/New, but many of the subs I was in on Reddit don’t have active communities here, so I only see a handful of new posts a day. A couple of times a week I switch to All/Hot or All/Active as a way to find new communities, or just see what’s going on outside of my tiny bubble.

Yeah, with a few exceptions, if you are in Europe you can likely look at our news media and be like “Ha, well, at least I am not there”

ICE wants to know your location

Whats wrong with high speed inter city express trains?
I don’t get what you mean with the trains. Just a europe reference?
the ICE is a type of trains instead of the american Immigration and Customs Enforcement Gestapo, which the OP was referring to.
Ah thanks. That was a good one in retrospect, so apologies for the ignorance, lol.
I wasn’t even trying to figure out the initialism. It wouldn’t have been a difficult one. My brain was stuck on “is this a misreply?”
Apparently only USA speaks English and we should all be speaking German or something to show we’re not American?
Wolfenstein timeline incoming.
Ok
Its funny cause no one in the US complained about all the brexit stuff a few years ago and we just read about neighboring politics. Shits a mess here rn and its in the news. Calm down people. You’ll have your mess too.
Europeans are extremely fragile. I love my euro homies, but they are super butthurt about US world dominance.
we aren’t butthurt, we just dislike you
At least you’re honest about being worthless pieces of shit. But there are decent Europeans out there; you’re just not one of them.
