Judging by your downvotes, it looks like many people here neither know nor care that there is a world of difference between Border Patrol and ICE.
It had launched 4 or 5 years before I joined, so I wasn’t really legacy. I came here to the fediverse when Christian announced the Apollo fuckery, and it was like leaving a collapsing pile of flaming trash to breathing fresh air with good people. Those /r/ stories don’t need to be here.
Reddit is a cesspit. The first time I posted a comment there ~ 15 years ago, someone answered by graphically describing how he would violently rape me.

Tens of thousands? There were over FIVE MILLION protesters.
Video shows it gained what appears to be less than 200 feet after takeoff, and it looks like the pilot couldn’t get the nose up. It remained intact until it struck the medical building. The entire flight was just a few seconds.

California, Oregon, and Washington are all donor states that contribute a combined ~$160 billion more to the federal government than they get back each year. They also make up $3.1 trillion of the GDP, they have all mainland west coast ports, and they’re major agricultural states. They’d honestly be better off if they banded together to Bugs Bunny off.

The extreme shortage of medical specialists is a direct result of the US government cutting 1960’s federal funding that had been established to incentivize education in specialties.
The medical professionals who became specialists because of this funding are now dead or too old to practice, the government has seen this coming for decades, and nobody in congress really gave enough of a fuck to address it.
It’s ok, everybody. The insurance companies are contracting with 3rd party companies and using AI to make decisions, so we’re all good.
We can thank Senator John “but he’s a good guy” McCain for cramming this fucking land transfer into a 2014 Defense Department spending measure, under the guise of national security. So glad we’re safe, now.
Or maybe you’re prescient. Roving bands of cocoa robbers who surround armored ice cream trucks is a plausible dystopian scenario in the US, and now I’ll be disappointed if I don’t get to see it.
The United States has been dodging the ICC since Bush the Younger yipped out. Membership and retroactive accountability is long overdue, and hopefully it will start with ICE.
Stop it. It’s bad enough we have to wade through nearly two years of campaign assaults prior to POTUS elections. The spectacle of the last inauguration was just 14 weeks ago, and we’re fucking exhausted. Just stop it.

My husband is like you, and also wishes for the absolute silence of my mind. But you’re right about green grass - I wish I could visualize happy memories or even picture the people I love.
I agree, probably some people did downvote because of the “just working” remark. It also appears that many downvotes are an emotional reaction to feeling empathy for anyone associated with ICE. The problem here is twofold:
The McAllen station isn’t ICE, and commenters here don’t seem to understand - or won’t stop feeling outrage long enough to learn - that the objectives, the methods, and the general principles between ICE and Border Patrol are vastly different. It’s like insisting that Grand Canyon and Everglades are identical because they’re both governed under the national parks system.
Seeing the fediverse slide into Reddit hive mind is cringey. People here used to be more open to respectful discussion. A mention of potential humanity in a reviled federal department wouldn’t have been brigaded. On that note, I appreciate your response.
