  • First, link some sources of how China/CCP is using TikTok in anyway different that Facebook to get data on its users, specifically the comparison to malware. I don’t think OP is overreacting and I do think this is a slippery slope (some entity outside US jurisdiction owns a successful app - this is clearly a message to all other companies and startups outside US jurisdiction that they will meet the same fate if their idea becomes too successful). And yes, I’m sure you will “but but CCP” here, and I will say show me proof TikTok is doing something nefarious (that’s any different than what current platforms are doing - all I’ve ever heard is fear mongering that China “could” do something something etc blah blah)

  • Yeah I think there is a bit of a disconnect with gun people. Some people are purely about self defense, some people are just genuine enthusiasts, and then there is the group of people who like to pretend they are part of the first two groups but really seem to have a lust for blood - be it fear (someone rings the door bell, or mistakenly drives down the driveway), perceived persecution, political ideology or just downright racist shit.

Antigun people seem to think everyone who likes guns is part of the last crazy group. It’s a bit hard to really tell who is who sometimes, but it’s definitely impossible to keep the guns out of the crazies hands.

  • I will totally agree with you it all does come down to money, but I feel Apple/Tim Cook is still principled in this regard - he has made a stand that the customer is not the product, and the investors/share holders appear to respect this boundary so far. All that is needed is a shithead CEO to come in and squeeze every cent, which at that point might very well be to monetize users like Google. Anything can change tomorrow.

Btw I’m a hobbyist security researcher, and the more I study Apple/iOS/MacOS, the more impressed I am. I don’t actually have any apple devices, but I’m really starting to consider it

  • Let’s be real here, google and every other company sells you out to their advertisers instantly and even double dip and triple dip on your info wherever they can. Apple doesn’t and they take their security seriously. Feds are always crying about how hard it is to break into iphones, telcos are complaining how apple protects it’s users (because telcos have an interest in monetizing those apple users), and the payouts for finding security vulnerabilities for apple products are very high.

Google and apple are absolutely on different ends of the spectrum of user privacy and security

  • There was a saying years ago that still hold true to today - “Unix is user friendly, it’s just selective who it’s friends are”.

Years ago, I setup an SGI IRIX box for my parents to use, back when Netscape was browser king. I had it so customized for my parents that they still talk about how easy it was to use; problem for me was it took me months to figure out all the config tricks and X customizations to pull it off… Your post made me think of that lol
