I’m locking this because too many people are shouting at each other here because of moderation practices.
This is not a complaints forum. See pinned post.
Been checking and commenting on Lemmy everyday since I made my account. Its my new first opened app of the day now
Yesterday was the first day that Lemmy activity tipped over the threshold, and there were too many overnight posts for me to read all of them over breakfast.
Greeting new Lemmings!
Please wipe your feet, we don’t want anyone tracking in any spez.
Glad to be here!!
Ha, I knew setting up my own server would attract more people!!! /s
But it is a great development, happy to see it 😀
Lemmy is fantastic!
I created an account a while back and I’m back after receiving a warning from reddit for upvoting certain content. I was going through the communities looking for stuff to subscribe to and I was a bit surprised by the number of communities with a couple thousand users and the last post being half a month or more out.
I hope people’s suggestions about making the instances and navigation more seamless is being taken seriously because there hasn’t been much change there from what I’m seeing.
Even though 50k is a nice number of MAUs and allows for active discussion in the bigger communities, it’s still not enough to fuel niche communities - at least presuming the 90-9-1 rule applies even to early adopters such as us. While I agree that discoverability could be a lot better, I think what’s holding back the smaller communities right now is lacking critical mass more than anything else.
A bunch of communities were created at the last Reddit exodus and left to die. Buuut some of the communities might have moved to another Lemmy server or simply died out because the same community exists on another Lemmy server.
What is the reddit drama this time?
Well out right ban on the american hero’s name along with pandering to alt right and their parasite owners.
It’s the ever enduring brain melting Enshittification… I heard you can now buy decorations or something similar for your sub. I don’t have a source for this, but afaik they have been adding new features for reddditors to spend their money on.
Getting in trouble for upvoting restricted material. If you continually upvote stuff that reddit deems not allowed on the site you get banned.
Tension over there is huge. After I turned a little more political in my comments, it only took 2 months or to accrue 3 temp bans. The appeals were not heard, they are wrong and don’t care. The last appeal got me booted forever. Prepare for way more users.
New guy here. Signikg up was a bitch but glad to be here :)
What made it a bitch? Genuinely curious.
Instances - what are they and how does it work together. Also slow password reset emails. I have three accounts now.
I still don’t really understand but i am in 🤷♂️
Think about instances as email providers. You pick a provider (feddit.dk, feddit.uk, lemmy.wtf etc.) to access everything from all the other Lemmy providers + the rest of “the Fediverse”, which fx consists of Mastodon, PeerTube and Pixelfed.
Was it on Feddit.dk you had issues with slow emails? That might be something the admin, @SorteKanin@feddit.dk should look into.
Thank you for the reply. The thing is, and I think this will apply to others too, I’m just a casual user. Unknown boxes scare me.
Couldn’t they be hidden away on signup (prefilled) and only visible when you click ‘advanced’.
Also, I have a mastodon account too. Are they now the same thing?
What “boxes” are you talking about here, when signing up on a Lemmy provider?
Mastodon and Lemmy is different software, serving two different functions, but they are connected. So it is possible for a user on Mastodon to create and comment on posts from Mastodon, on Lemmy.
If you follow this link to Mastodon.social, you can see this post and our comments.
Really happy to see. I need to start posting more.
That’s the spirit.
I am pretty convinced these stats are low because I remember the early years of Reddit feeling much less active than the Threadiverse does now and I have to assume Reddit’s MAUs in 2008-9 were at least above 100K.
Regardless, this is nice to see and I recommend everyone check out !fedibridge@lemmy.dbzer0.com if they are interested in helping to promote Lemmy instances on Reddit.
It’s possible that early adopters (ie: the current Lemmy population) as a population subset don’t fully conform to the 90-9-1 rule.
I would imagine that we’re all more motivated than average considering we’ve made the conscious choice to travel the path less taken because we have standards

On the other hand, Reddit’s reported users numbers are way too high for the actual activity on the website. I follow /r/BuyfromEU quite closely since the sub blew up, and it’s definitely not that active for a place with supposedly 150k subs
Great point, absolutely! I don’t subscribe to the “dead internet theory” but my time on the Fediverse has also convinced me that all of the corporate platform’s traffic numbers are almost certainly heavily inflated (probably to justify higher ad prices).
Investor fraud is basically the entire business model of well basically everything anymore. I also wouldn’t put them past it to have ai generated comments.
What’s that dip on 2/12? What happened?
The hexbear.net instance went down, because the admins forgot to renew the domain name
(Technically the server was still running, but federation works via domain names)
Hexbear went offline as the domain expired, went to auction and the domain admin was MIA. They’ve been restored as the domain admin (unfortunately) came back and reclaimed it

Woo more people to join our cult. Everyone will get their robes in the mail
Wait, I’ve been here almost 2 years, where’s my robes‽
You know what you did
>:( you know too much now
My guess is robe crimes

Namely disrobing at inopportune times.
I cut the sleeves off of mine, that was probably my crime. Sleeves are like pants; the fewer you wear the better your day is.
The real robes were the Caroline’s we got DMed by along the way.
Is Caroline like the new Nicole? The site’s moving too fast already, I can’t keep up!
No, I’m just terrible with names… blew it again…
What’s the password?
Tap for spoiler

You and I will be considered the early adaptors. People will guess as to why we migrated so early.
Well at least Nicole from Toronto in their inbox.
