I’m locking this because too many people are shouting at each other here because of moderation practices.

This is not a complaints forum. See pinned post.

Hexbear went offline as the domain expired, went to auction and the domain admin was MIA. They’ve been restored as the domain admin (unfortunately) came back and reclaimed it

For the story, if i recall correctly, part of hexbear admins were aways so they got a paiement problem.

Their domain reseller put a bid for hexbear.net domain. It skyrocketed to 2500$. I’m glad they didn’t have to pay those corpothieve.

thats about the time when reddit was upping thier ban purges, my hunch is people who have lemmy mightve stop using temporarily to find out what was going on/repealing thier bans on reddit?

for a several days i dint immediately go to LEMMY after my permabans, but trying to find out the reason behind all these purges ? some people have multiple reddit accounts

Correct. However with ActivityPub protocol those number are irrevalent : any increase of users from (Lemmy, Mbin, Piefed) will benefit Lemmy, Mbin, Piefed.

And to a certain extend, on Mbin and later Piefed, they will also reach microblogging plateform as iceshrimp and mastodon. Then pixelfed, peertube, loops…

I’m excited to see where software development is going to go. It seems like every major microblogging platform has a few different flavors and there are multiple platform choices available. What were using is just the beginning, the software can only ever get better really. It’s not like the corporate world where they make shit worse on purpose to make more money. And as the software gets better than use might increase as well since you can do more and do it easier and more elegantly

You should definitly try them. :)

              • Mbin : you can connect to mastodon account, they support flair, filter by content type. I don’t use it a lot but enjoy it.
              • Piefed : a good moderation board, flair, multi-community (feed), peertube support…

the more and more reddit increasing thier filters to ban or remove comments we will see more. it going to take permabans for people to come here in large numbers. sooner or later reddit is just a clone of FACEBOOK.

No. However there are two mobile app in WIP :

        • a fork of Thunder : Pferd. (only for testing and i love its logo)
        • Interstellar, they want to support Piefed

I use daily Piefed as an app. The mobile website works well :

        • you open https://piefed.social with your browser.
        • Then click on add a shortcut and it will work as an app.

I suspect the fediverse is stickier than mainstream social media, since there’s no incentive to be anti-consumer, and anyone can make their own frontend.

It’s only a matter of time until these companies keep making unforced errors and people join us.

The thing is no one is actually forced to use their websites, we can all leave at any time when it’s no longer worth it. This means that we have all the power since those websites are nothing without their users and the content they post. You are also right that the diversity and quality of software offerings can only go up and we see this happen even with rather low user numbers. Imagine what the world could look like when corporations are unwelcome nuisances

So, Verse as competitive, verse as poem, verse as conversation…i think it fit lemmy/mbin/nodeBB/piefed perfectly :)

I think they’re referring to the fact that you no longer can create accounts without using an email address. You were able to use a UI loophole to do it before via Old Reddit, but no more.

They seem to be blocking access from certain IPs and VPNs (if not logged in?) Which is funny because some of these VPNs are not really hiding anything. Like my work VPN which I would think makes it pretty obvious which company I work for. Annoying when search results link to reddit content.

I use a VPN (because my government is insane) and i get a “security warning” if I visit any Reddit post (even old Reddit).

      Reddit has become very strange.

Shadowbanning sucks when your on the other side of it.

Forever mods that have hundreds of default subreddits act like dictators. Banning people from all their collections of subreddits without anyone knowing.

Removing the ability for users to see actual number of votes up/down.

And now with the whole “don’t upvotes certain content or you will get a strike”. Never mind that isn’t how the site works at all.

They haven’t come out with a feature that people have wanted in the last couple of years.

I’ll still check sometimes on Reddit when I’m at my desk if I feel like it and I’ve got time, so like barely anymore.

When 3rd party apps died I moved here.

After them saying that if you upvote enough banned content you’ll get banned, I’m just waiting to catch ban over there.

Thank you for your service 🫡

I’m the same as the other guy, my rule is that I only post/comment about Lemmy when I use my reddit acount.

I used to only comment a few times per month when I used reddit but as soon as I started using Lemmy I started making hundreds of comments per month. Especially in the first few months, I got to 1k comments super fast. Since then I’ve slowed down a bit but still way more active than I was on reddit. This is my alt account btw.

It’s so much more rewarding to participate on Lemmy for a multitude of reasons, but mostly because it feels like people actually care enough to read my comments and respond. On reddit it often seemed like shouting into the void. Plus, it’s a great feeling to be a part of something that’s community based and not just soulless corporate slop. Every time I check reddit, it feels so miserable and I wonder how I ever tolerated that site for so long.

The thing is for a good solid decade using one of those corporate websites actually it wasn’t so bad, I was right user since 2012 and it used to be good. It’s slowly degraded over the years since then and at this point I think I’m fine never going back, except if I am reading some several years old post that has information but even then the internet archive can do that for you and it might be the only place to get that information from Reddit

I created an account a while back and I’m back after receiving a warning from reddit for upvoting certain content. I was going through the communities looking for stuff to subscribe to and I was a bit surprised by the number of communities with a couple thousand users and the last post being half a month or more out.

I hope people’s suggestions about making the instances and navigation more seamless is being taken seriously because there hasn’t been much change there from what I’m seeing.

A bunch of communities were created at the last Reddit exodus and left to die. Buuut some of the communities might have moved to another Lemmy server or simply died out because the same community exists on another Lemmy server.

Even though 50k is a nice number of MAUs and allows for active discussion in the bigger communities, it’s still not enough to fuel niche communities - at least presuming the 90-9-1 rule applies even to early adopters such as us. While I agree that discoverability could be a lot better, I think what’s holding back the smaller communities right now is lacking critical mass more than anything else.
