I’m locking this because too many people are shouting at each other here because of moderation practices.
This is not a complaints forum. See pinned post.
What’s that dip on 2/12? What happened?
The hexbear.net instance went down, because the admins forgot to renew the domain name
(Technically the server was still running, but federation works via domain names)
Hexbear went offline as the domain expired, went to auction and the domain admin was MIA. They’ve been restored as the domain admin (unfortunately) came back and reclaimed it
What happened around the middle of February that caused that slight but sharp drop-off?
For the story, if i recall correctly, part of hexbear admins were aways so they got a paiement problem.
Their domain reseller put a bid for hexbear.net domain. It skyrocketed to 2500$. I’m glad they didn’t have to pay those corpothieve.
Hexbear going down, !fediverselore@lemmy.ca
A slightly different graph from Fedecan shows the user growth more clearly without the Hexbear blip
Highest daily growth since 2023 at 1.2k per day the past few days.
i wonder if those jumps are due to Reddits ban waves?
Nice, I didn’t know fedecan hosted graphs like this. The fediverse.observer graph has a weird scale and Fedidb has also been weird lately, so this is a good alternative.
Ahh okay. Thanks.
thats about the time when reddit was upping thier ban purges, my hunch is people who have lemmy mightve stop using temporarily to find out what was going on/repealing thier bans on reddit?
for a several days i dint immediately go to LEMMY after my permabans, but trying to find out the reason behind all these purges ? some people have multiple reddit accounts
2025 is the year of the Lemmyverse!
*threadiverse, we don’t want to exclude other software
True, but this graph only shows Lemmy users, right?
Yeah
Correct. However with ActivityPub protocol those number are irrevalent : any increase of users from (Lemmy, Mbin, Piefed) will benefit Lemmy, Mbin, Piefed.
And to a certain extend, on Mbin and later Piefed, they will also reach microblogging plateform as iceshrimp and mastodon. Then pixelfed, peertube, loops…
I’m excited to see where software development is going to go. It seems like every major microblogging platform has a few different flavors and there are multiple platform choices available. What were using is just the beginning, the software can only ever get better really. It’s not like the corporate world where they make shit worse on purpose to make more money. And as the software gets better than use might increase as well since you can do more and do it easier and more elegantly
It seems like every major microblogging platform has a few different flavors
Do you mean every major social media platform?
I haven’t seen any lemmy forks yet
You should definitly try them. :)
- Mbin : you can connect to mastodon account, they support flair, filter by content type. I don’t use it a lot but enjoy it.
- Piefed : a good moderation board, flair, multi-community (feed), peertube support…
They’re not forks, but we have piefed and mbin (fork of kbin) and a couple more that have shut down
The more people that transition over here the better it’ll be (outside of some of some subs). I’m hopeful to see more community engagement.
the more and more reddit increasing thier filters to ban or remove comments we will see more. it going to take permabans for people to come here in large numbers. sooner or later reddit is just a clone of FACEBOOK.

2025 is also the year of Piefed. :)
Is there a mobile app yet? I made an account because I was interested in the new Feeds feature, but I spend 100% of my time on the Threadiverse using my phone.
No. However there are two mobile app in WIP :
- a fork of Thunder : Pferd. (only for testing and i love its logo)
- Interstellar, they want to support Piefed
I use daily Piefed as an app. The mobile website works well :
- you open https://piefed.social with your browser.
- Then click on add a shortcut and it will work as an app.
The year of PielemmbinBB
The entire fedi is going up with new users. We keep having wins.
Kinda easy when traditional keeps hitting itself over and over.
I suspect the fediverse is stickier than mainstream social media, since there’s no incentive to be anti-consumer, and anyone can make their own frontend.
It’s only a matter of time until these companies keep making unforced errors and people join us.
The thing is no one is actually forced to use their websites, we can all leave at any time when it’s no longer worth it. This means that we have all the power since those websites are nothing without their users and the content they post. You are also right that the diversity and quality of software offerings can only go up and we see this happen even with rather low user numbers. Imagine what the world could look like when corporations are unwelcome nuisances
Year of the Verse
Nice word, i tried to find a similar word to microblogging (masto/IceShrimp) Sadly, threads was already taken, and i do want to promote Meta.
So, Verse as competitive, verse as poem, verse as conversation…i think it fit lemmy/mbin/nodeBB/piefed perfectly :)
Our year comrades.
Joined up yesterday and have been pretty happy so far. Have been looking for an alternative so i could ditch reddit since the API changes and had no idea this place existed until i saw a random thread yesterday
Welcome!
Welcome!
If you’re new, I definitely recommend checking out https://lemmyverse.net/communities for finding new communities to subscribe to, rather than just browsing “all”. There are a lot of weird communities out there when you just browse “all”…
Block the weird communities if you dislike them so much.
https://sub.rehab/ is also good.
Sub.rehab is super outdated and https://fediverser.network/ is easier and crowdsourced.
Thanks, hadn’t seen that one before
Welcome!
There’s a ton of good apps that use the API.
Welcome! We’ve got memes on deck at !memes@lemmy.world and if you’re a programmer of some kinds we got !programmer_humor@programming.dev to scratch that itch and be sure to drop a shit(post) off at !lemmyshitpost@lemmy.world or if you want SCIENCE and memes head over to the wonderful !science_memes@mander.xyz or if you just want regular SCIENCE mander.xyz is full of sciency comms like !science@mander.xyz and !astronomy@mander.xyz . !onehundredninetysix@lemmy.blahaj.zone is also nice this time of year, but you’ll have to post before you can leave.
We’re not without our cons though, biggest problem we have are probably the Tankies, but here they’re mostly on the Tankie Triad lemmy.ml, lemmygrad and hexbear. You have a .world account so you only have to worry about .ml, but on Lemmy you can do a personal instance wide block if you’d rather just not deal with them. If you want to see what they get up to from a safe distance check !meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works
Solidarity amongst the instances! We will not be divided against each other!
We have an entire instance dedicated to popular 1960s television show Star Trek (don’t go there)
There are dozens of us!
so basically a right wing propaganda/astroturf instances, no thanks had enough of that on reddit.
They’re actually mostly anarchists/communists, so left wing
^ one of the bigger Tankies around, “good posts” aka anything pro-CCP, pro-Russia, pro-NK
Anything otherwise is considered “liberal”/Western propaganda/“CIA something or another”
And you’re the biggest anti-communist “leftist” around.
NOoo TAnKiES AREN’t CoMmUNISt They’RE AuthoritArIan. Every time you say that you only show your ignorance. Read an actual book, or stop talking nonsense. Stop trying to fabricate a pacifist communism, and just admit that you are anti-communist full-stop.
- Friedrich Engels, On Authority
- Karl Marx, Critique of the Gotha Program
- V.I. Lenin, “Left-Wing” Communism: An Infantile Disorder
Stop trying to fabricate a pacifist communism
Ah ok, so if authoritarian communism is the only form of communism that exists then eroding human rights ever further in the pursuit of it is A-OK then?
Sorry, I don’t subscribe to that, I personally would love to see the fall of capitalism in my lifetime, but not at the sacrifice of basic human rights like freedom of speech and inviting even worse censorship.
He’ll never read a book.
Hmm yes, 2 century+ old books that predate the CCP coming into power by like 25 years and well before modern age concerns like the power of the internet could even be imagined
Y’all keep arguing theory with books that are incredibly dated and blog posts based on that dated info when most of us are talking about what the Chinese and Russian governments are doing today.
!onehundredninetysix@lemmy.blahaj.zone is also nice this time of year, but you’ll have to post before you can leave.
Keep in mind that subscribing to this community means that it’ll take over your feed.
/j, but it’s also true
In terms of sorting the “tankie triad” least bad to worst though it’s definitely: ML, Grad, then HexBear. At least I sometimes have decent interactions with people from ML, can’t say the same about the other 2 though.
Edit: Actually put this as a reply to the correct comment this time. :/
I deleted the other one as I replied to the wrong comment.
Welcome! It’s a great, homely place that still feels a little bit like the old internet.
In addition to the already mentioned Lemmyverse, two other great ways of finding active communities are !communitypromo@lemmy.ca and !trendingcommunities@feddit.nl
still feels a little bit like the old internet.
Yes! I miss it.
The old internet never went away, not on a technical level for sure. What changed is that big corporations had dominant positions from control over user bases and then they squeezed us for profits so hard that it’s no longer worth it to use them. This process seems to have accelerated since the end of the era of easy money in 2022 which is why we’re seeing things pop off more than it used to.
Made a similar post yesterday on !fedibridge@lemmy.dbzer0.com , nice to celebrate again!
People getting sick and tide of Reddit. TBH I’m still salty over them killing 3rd party apps and I’m so glad they did because that drew the line for me, also fuck spez.
They’ve basically banned anonymous accounts. Their whole thing was anonymity.
Without anonymity it is in fact pointless. Pseudo anonymity is extremely useful I basically won’t go anywhere without it. That’s definitely a feature we should advertise to people, you can actually be anonymous
Wait first I’m hearing of this one. What happened now?
I think they’re referring to the fact that you no longer can create accounts without using an email address. You were able to use a UI loophole to do it before via Old Reddit, but no more.
Woah, it’s finally gone? Guess I haven’t been back in a while
They seem to be blocking access from certain IPs and VPNs (if not logged in?) Which is funny because some of these VPNs are not really hiding anything. Like my work VPN which I would think makes it pretty obvious which company I work for. Annoying when search results link to reddit content.
This what infuriates me the most.
I use a VPN (because my government is insane) and i get a “security warning” if I visit any Reddit post (even old Reddit).
All they’re doing is building a moat around OUR content we created.
You can use this script with a browser addon like Tampermonkey to get around the sign-in requirement:
// ==UserScript== // @name reddit - unblock (create cookie and reload) // @namespace Violentmonkey Scripts // @match *://*.reddit.com/* // @grant none // @version 2024-01-08 // @noframes // @license MIT License // @description for "Blocked" "whoa there, pardner!" cowboy bs // ==/UserScript== /* thanks: https://www.reddit.com/r/mullvadvpn/comments/18jbxb2 */ if (document.title === "Blocked") { document.cookie="reddit_session=;Domain=.reddit.com;Path=/;Expires=;Secure=true;SameSite=None"; window.location.reload(); }
Why should the user have to fix reddit to make it functional?
Reddit has become very strange.
Shadowbanning sucks when your on the other side of it.
Forever mods that have hundreds of default subreddits act like dictators. Banning people from all their collections of subreddits without anyone knowing.
Removing the ability for users to see actual number of votes up/down.
And now with the whole “don’t upvotes certain content or you will get a strike”. Never mind that isn’t how the site works at all.
They haven’t come out with a feature that people have wanted in the last couple of years.
It’s been a while since I’ve been on and everything I’m hearing is that it just keeps getting worse. Eventually it’ll be completely unusable and probably shudder but by then the real conversation will have moved elsewhere
Getting rid of coins/rewards just to empty everyone’s stock and then bringing them back again without 1:1 compensation and forgetting everyone who gave their coins away before they would vanish
I’m more oxi clean of reddit myself
I’ll still check sometimes on Reddit when I’m at my desk if I feel like it and I’ve got time, so like barely anymore.
When 3rd party apps died I moved here.
After them saying that if you upvote enough banned content you’ll get banned, I’m just waiting to catch ban over there.
i still lurk a lot. i have a rule against posting there though… which admittedly i did break recently, but only to plug lemmy. otherwise no posts/comments there in two years
I think since coming over here I’ve done like 2 dozen comments and a handful of posts (on Reddit), but considering I used to post and comment as much as I do here but over there I’d say that’s a lot of progress.
I’ve done over 3k comments and over 3 hundred posts here since joining in June of 2023.
Thank you for your service 🫡
I’m the same as the other guy, my rule is that I only post/comment about Lemmy when I use my reddit acount.
I used to only comment a few times per month when I used reddit but as soon as I started using Lemmy I started making hundreds of comments per month. Especially in the first few months, I got to 1k comments super fast. Since then I’ve slowed down a bit but still way more active than I was on reddit. This is my alt account btw.
It’s so much more rewarding to participate on Lemmy for a multitude of reasons, but mostly because it feels like people actually care enough to read my comments and respond. On reddit it often seemed like shouting into the void. Plus, it’s a great feeling to be a part of something that’s community based and not just soulless corporate slop. Every time I check reddit, it feels so miserable and I wonder how I ever tolerated that site for so long.
The thing is for a good solid decade using one of those corporate websites actually it wasn’t so bad, I was right user since 2012 and it used to be good. It’s slowly degraded over the years since then and at this point I think I’m fine never going back, except if I am reading some several years old post that has information but even then the internet archive can do that for you and it might be the only place to get that information from Reddit
Yeah that’s true, I was also a user since 2012 and it was much better back then. It slowly got worse through the 2010s and then really fell off a cliff after 2020
It feels more human over here (if that makes sense lol)
And yeah after my initial break from Reddit it definitely feels more insufferable over there.
This is also one of my alts, I’ve a few but none are used as much as this one by a long shot.
Use Reddit Enhancement Suite. You’ll thank me later.
makes red it much more usable and easy on the eyes.
I used it for awhile (I’ve been on Reddit for about 13 years)
Honestly though pulling more away from social media is good for my mental health. And making the experience more abrasive so it’s less of a passive thing is good.
Same, it was over for me when they took Boost away thankfully Boost pivoted to Lemmy lol
Is Boost dead though? I love it too, but it hasn’t updated in a while
I have no idea, Boost has always been one to go long periods between updates, but it is getting pretty long since the last one

I use voyager and don’t use any gestures. Looks like I turned them off in settings. And they have a ton of options for things you can adjust in the settings. I was a reddit is fun app user and am completely happy with voyager. But I’m also almost always just lurking. So more active users might have more problems but with how much you can adjust it I doubt it.
You can have gestures disabled on voyager and just use the buttons
I’m using Thunder and really enjoying it

Does it save your position in the comments of a specific post? That’s my #1 criterion for an app. Boost is the only one that I’ve found that does it
Like if you visit a link or go to someone’s profile, then go back to return to the comments, will your scroll position be remembered so you can see the comment you were just looking at? If so, yes
Not that I can see
Mine stopped working completely this week. It then linked to boost for lemmy. Now I’m here.
Boost gang!
Neat
🥔
Greeting new Lemmings!
Please wipe your feet, we don’t want anyone tracking in any spez.
Glad to be here!!
Ha, I knew setting up my own server would attract more people!!! /s
But it is a great development, happy to see it 😀
Lemmy is fantastic!
I created an account a while back and I’m back after receiving a warning from reddit for upvoting certain content. I was going through the communities looking for stuff to subscribe to and I was a bit surprised by the number of communities with a couple thousand users and the last post being half a month or more out.
I hope people’s suggestions about making the instances and navigation more seamless is being taken seriously because there hasn’t been much change there from what I’m seeing.
A bunch of communities were created at the last Reddit exodus and left to die. Buuut some of the communities might have moved to another Lemmy server or simply died out because the same community exists on another Lemmy server.
Even though 50k is a nice number of MAUs and allows for active discussion in the bigger communities, it’s still not enough to fuel niche communities - at least presuming the 90-9-1 rule applies even to early adopters such as us. While I agree that discoverability could be a lot better, I think what’s holding back the smaller communities right now is lacking critical mass more than anything else.
