Start with Strange New Worlds. It’s the best new Trek in 30 years. You can find it on the Bay or wherever you get your videos.

If you aren’t hooked by the end of season 1, yeah it’s probably not for you.

No start with “The Next Generation”, or “Star Trek: The Original Series” if you like older shows

They are better, then move on to lower decks if you like comedy in a star trek setting then strange new worlds

I’d also recommend star trek prodigy, it can be watched as a family

Star trek picard season 1 and 3 are okay but depart from general star trek quality, season 2 is an absolute clusterfuck of awfulness that should be avoided and I have made my own headcannon that it was just another ones of q’s games where they messed with reality creating an awful fever dream of reality and bullshitted about themself dying just to mess with picard again just to fix that godawful season in my mind

Sometimes yes, but definitely not with Trek.

So I wasn’t into it originally, but watching it again as an adult I’m kinda fond of TNG. Cast is amazing, stories are (mostly) great. But I just love how mature and optimistic it is, for the most part.

Seeing difficult questions of morality and strife - seeing people consistently confront those situations with incredible ethics, empathy, and like, well, ADULTS…it’s super-refreshing.

And I like the parts of that which shone through into Voyager, DS9, and Enterprise (in that order, at least what I saw of them. I sorta got into Voyager.

Watching Picard, a lot of the characters are there, but most of what I seem to like about TNG isn’t. Plus a bunch of the plot is just nonsense and crappily written. I really don’t like it.

I tried watching some of DIS here and there but it fucking sucks (IMO). SNW still seems to have too much melodrama and stuff I just don’t like. Maybe if I wasn’t trying to compare it to TNG or VOY subconsciously, I would like it more; who knows.

              Orville is alright.

Everyone says Lower Decks is really great, and I love Futurama and Venture Bros and Rick and Morty and etc. It probably IS great. But I don’t really want throwaways about how phasers can’t melt steel beams and fart jokes in Trek.

              Guess I’m just picky :)

TNG is my favorite too. I think Lower Decks really walks the fine line of being a little bit silly but still being serious enough to feel like core trek.

Really? The squid’s take in that thread is everyday normal, especially for those of us older folks who grew up with parents who innocently took photos of us as babies in the tub. It was super common, and not at all intended to gratify anyone sexually.

Also, the squid’s demeanor in the linked exchange remained fair despite them being repeatedly implied to be some kind of pedophile. If anything, their position in that debate (and their fair demeanor) made me like them more, not less.

Wait a second… Maybe this link was all part of a slick PR move to boost the squid’s profile! Well played sir/madam!

Ada is a strange one yeah. I remember them because instead of just generally deciding they didn’t want to federate with lemmynsfw, she accused the admins of lemmynsfw of allowing CSAM when that turned out to be from a confirmed adult model that just happened to have a smaller body, and when she found that out she doubled down. That’s such a weird take from a supposedly pro LGBTQ+ lemmy admin, considering that accepting of people of all shapes and sizes is a core tenet of being LGBTQ+.

One time I posted a meme on Blahaj in which someone named Obvious_Troll@hexbear.net was attacking a trans person. Ada sent me a message about it saying I was attacking a real trans person. There is no real trans person named Obvious_Troll. I made up that username for the meme. Ada defended a fictional transphobic troll, because they were from Hexbear.

I kinda get not starting shit with other instances (Although, Hexbear should be the last to be able to invoke that), and it is still her instance and her rules there. But yeah it would not make me happy to be part of a community under those rules. Being a safe space doesn’t mean you have to shield bad actors from criticism. Especially if she’s not going to be respectful to good actors. And it really is weird how she comes to some of her conclusions (How is a non-existing person trans, where did she learn this?) and then still wants the same response when that turns out to be wrong.

I also get annoyed at lightning fast responses. And I agree 100%

It takes no time or energy to come up with one answer to a question. I’m fact, I think most humans’ brains are built for snap decisions like that.

But to weigh multiple answers against each other, poking holes in the answers you are most inclined to believe? That takes thought. And if someone is not doing that for you, then odds are, their brain is simply letting them take the discussion less seriously than your brain (or your morality) allows.

So I think you have every right to feel frustrated at such behavior.

So what you are saying (through an incredibly thick layer of condescension) is that you know your belief is wrong. And instead of changing your belief, you would rather maintain it, knowing it is wrong. That’s just bizarre.

I am saying that celebrity worship, or more generally, worship of people who one deems “above” oneself, is a very problematic aspect of all East Asian cultures which are influenced by Confucianism, and by the fact that they shed feudalism not as long ago as for example Western European societies. And I don’t understand the need to use that kind of gutter vocabulary. Doesn’t exactly make you seem very educated.

and Confucianism has NOTHING to do with celebrity worship. it’s about deference. it’s your “”“THE WEST”“” and the way they idolize god and prophets that are the true celebrity worship cultures
