They don’t mention her by name, but allude to her when talking about phonics and should probably have made more mention of her. Lucy Calkins has single handedly destroyed American literacy.

It’s no shock that states that have abandoned her program and went back to phonics based learning have seen huge rebounds.

That woman should be in jail.

My mom used to be a substitute teacher, and when she told me the new way kids get “taught” to read I had to look it up for myself, because I was like “You’ve got to be joking.” I couldn’t believe it was real and that a large contingent of people actually thought it was a good idea.

I was going to mention this. My son was taught “sight words” and it’s the dumbest fucking bullshit I’ve ever seen.

On top of that, many parents of today, do not put an importance on reading at home.

Only one teacher he’s had has done spelling tests, in all these years… one teacher.

I practice both reading and writing with my son as often as he can tolerate at home. It’s really sad seeing these kids cannot spell or write, or yes even read.

They fucked a whole generation of kids, in more than a few ways, but one of which was definitely the years they switched off phonics and taught bogus sight words.

I infer there is some history of it being politicized in my state.

At one meeting early on, my kid’s teacher described this program to me and I said, “Yes, phonics. That’s phonics you’re describing.”

      (dramatic eyeroll by the teacher)

stage whisper: “It is. We just don’t call it that.”

I weep for the state of education in this country.

Reading how and why to teach reading like that, sounds like a lot of the feel good artsy-infused politicking I felt has been a major fail of the last like 30 years. Like people that grew up on early movies and television grew up and decided family sitcoms and YA novel adaptations would translate to real life
