  • Well, just an anecdote:

I simply deleted my WhatsApp and moved to signal. Just did it.

People installed the app, at least the ones that cared about staying in touch. Which was most everyone I cared about staying in touch with. A few of my friend groups also moved the group chat to signal, though all of them do have other ones with the people who didn’t care enough to move too, but I hear it isn’t that big a deal, they had multiple groups before and will have in future, doesn’t really feel like any extra hassle they say.

It’s been fine. No problems. I’ve had more trouble trying to explain to my extended family why I’m no longer posting on instagram. Those I never had in WhatsApp either back in the day, so they “stayed in touch” by watching my pictures I suppose. But I just consistently tell people they can reach me always via signal or plain old sms.

I guess the biggest thing to be scared about would be fomo for most, but I don’t really care enough, I’ve got so much going on already that it’s more of a blessing that I don’t have to be involved in every conversation or meme sharing or whatever.

It really gets so easy after simply switching. Just do it and that’s that. The people worth anything come with you, it’s just another app and another group chat or personal chat. Most already have discord and the meta messenger whatever its name is these days anyway. I know zero people with only one messenger/chat app and unsplintered groups across them. It’s not a big chore, and if it is, there’s always sms.

  • I have a hard time seeing this pov, as someone who likes their fizzy drinks (nay, requires them), but I also chug water frequently for a total of at least 2 litres each day.

It’s not like you need to only choose the one or the other. Some fizzy treats are dehydrating, even, so you kind of need to drink water on top of them.

You can have both! I love my cold water, it’s so refreshing and feels so good to down a 0.5l pint at one go! But I also love my fizzies, I need the stimulation of the fizziness on my tongue and back of mouth, it brings me such joy!

All to say, I find it weird there are so many comments about them being seemingly mutually exclusive.

  • Yeah I feel the same. I would love to get a really good and nostalgic tv series out of this, the movies were a big thing in my youth and I liked them, and while I can now see it and some of its themes and portrayals in a very different light even ignoring Rowling themself, I would argue the problematic stuff are in line with other cliche fantasy that have very similar problems. There seems to be a baseline of problematic stuff pretty much everything includes, likely there from naivety or ignorance rather than intentional malice, but there nevertheless. I can live with that small baseline amount as long as it’s clearly sensible, in that I can understand it’s probably not intended to do harm, and ultimately does not do much of it even unintentionally. And I can’t say I haven’t yearned a little bit to play the rpg situated in the world either.

BUT, and this is important to me, I can’t, unless Rowlings no longer benefits from them. The IP, if bought by HBO for example, leaving no royalties to the transphobic bigot, I could see myself even enjoying again. But the cutoff would have to be complete. Even if they managed to cut off Rowlings just for this show, they would still benefit from it in merchandise and the IP recognition in general, so I could not allow myself to enjoy the show even if it did not directly benefit the bigot.

But that’s not very likely, is it, to entirely cut them off? If anyone using the IP truly want to get the full potential, they should find a way to entice the bigot to sell off any and all rights and benefits regarding them and the franchise. But that’s not going to happen, because the hateful bigot needs the money to wage war against minorities.

It’s expensive to be hateful and oppressing. You need a money making machine to support such a campaign. And the bigot knows that.

The sad thing is, this will likely be a hit still. Most people don’t seem to care, and I guess that’s valid. But it’s harmful. Just like the game. People find ways to justify their consumption even if they are aware and agree with the problems.

Can’t do much else than try and educate the few people we face in our lives.

But if it was ever possible, I would do much want to try the game and ultimately watch this show too, if it ends up being decent in production terms. Just can’t see that happening, which is sad.

  • Oh man you are a visionary.

I can’t believe I never thought it suitable to just eat cheese cake for breakfast. Or any cake for that matter!

Seems obvious now that it’s been said, but never occurred to me prior seeing this. That’s a bit sad honestly, that I’ve become so reserved and “traditional” with my morning meals.

Edit: well just to answer the actual question so as not to waste space in the thread unnecessarily, the one thing I’d consider a bit more unconventional in my habits is just eating boiled eggs with nothing else. A cup of coffee and some 3 eggs, nothing else. I guess it’s not that strange, but I’ve got some funny looks when people are visiting or for example starting dating with someone, and I happen to do this.

  • I’m surprised how few answers actually include actually practical and helpful tools such as a bathing brush with a good long grip to reach just about everywhere. Is this a cultural thing? I swear I’ve seen them in British tv series at the very least, so I know for sure these are a common thing at least in the Nordics and the UK.

But I mean it’s the best. Really gets the old dead skin cells and other stuff off, and the blood flowing. The bristles are a bit rough, but that just makes it that much more pleasurable, you really feel it!

    Edit:

These things, surely they are mostly everywhere?

  • Huh. This has to be the worst promo site I’ve ever read. Whatever you described here does not seem to be reflected on that notion page.

You are very clearly selling something, so obviously this is a bad post to begin with, but in an attempt to make fun of the substance itself, I found none that is coherent. Can’t even joke about this, it’s so goofy.

Edit: I mean come on, what is this even

Not all digital products are built to protect and perform.

  • This is a quote from the resolution:

contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance

It’s not specifically against nazis. It’s against things like putting minorities into labour camps, jails, etc. You know, the kind of thing a lot of the places that voted green actively do this very moment.

But let’s not let that bring our great ideals down. Surely they truly are against the very thing they do, they just can’t help themselves and need the rest of the world to make them stop. Or something?

  • Do let me know if you have the time to read it. I’ll do the same if I find some myself.

Precisely the Russian rhetoric on and around the Ukrainian war was what got me suspicious.

It could be that western countries just generally are not against nazis or neo-nazis and actively shoot down resolutions against negative things about nazis. That is not however my experience at all, or the de facto state of the law in many countries, such as Germany, that very strongly condemn any nazi associations or symbolism as unlawful. Do note that they also abstained for this one. There’s a reason for that, and while I could be entirely off base, I’m pretty sure it’s not that the western democracies just like nazis and Russia for example is just so nice and honorful to dare go against the western consensus on liking nazis.

  • This seems a bit too convenient a spread to be as simple as that. The resolution very likely was phrased in a loaded way or had some bit that was dubious. Seeing as the second red one is Ukraine and all of the west is yellow, while Russia, Iran, China, India etc are green, there very likely is context that isn’t being given to us, either intentionally or by accident.

Edit: With Russia, China, India, especially, I mean their adventures with oppression of minorities and unequality in general between cultural groups or heritages. I’m not saying the West is without fault or anything, but clearly the ones voting green are neither. They probably wouldn’t vote against their own alignments here unless it’s just word salad without meaning or responsibilities. Which is something I’m confident would lead a lot of Europe at least not accept it because it’s just a watered down version of something actually desirable.

  • Those would be the extremely moddable games with a good all around base set for replayability, so for me:

    • Rimworld
    • Mount&Blade bannerlord
    • Crusader Kings 3
    • Civ 6
    • Luanti (and if have to choose a single game for it, Mineclonia I suppose)

As long as I can also archive some amount and variety of mods for each, of course.

If mods aren’t on the table, I think it would still look pretty much the same, except maybe civ 5 in place of 6, and in place of luanti perhaps Witcher 3, or 4 if it manages to release before this thing.

Edit: Actually hold that a bit: I need Stellaris there, especially if mods are ok. But even without. I’d skip luanti/witcher for that.
