That’s what 40% of my job is like. 20% more is reading through and understanding where the right place for this bit of code to live or what bits of code I should be reusing to make it. Another 20% is discussing with other engineers the tradeoffs of solving a problem with x vs y and picking what to do, and the last 20% is reviewing code, i.e. making sure other people solve their problems correctly and don’t drop a bunch of hack in our tree.

4. Climate is fucked, and it’s significantly our fault. Gas is now taxed at 2,000%. Meats and well, everything really, is going to be heavily taxed according to carbon footprint. And that will go up until we reach our target net emissions, zero.

5. All elected public officials are executed at the end of their terms.

I have a medical condition that makes it difficult for me to defecate, so doing so often takes 20m or more.

I usually doo on my own time (because, like, ethic or whatever), but even so, this seems actively hostile to me and I wonder if there’s a legal remedy.

Does it need to be physical? I’d expect data on a well funded S3 account or a tar snap account to live 30 years

If you actually want to use paper… QR codes. The format is simple, broadly distributed, and has error correction built in. It’ll make the whole process a lot easier than trying to roll something yourself.

Bitcoin wouldn’t be an awful solution to this, but there’s certainly a few better ones, such as

• Visa and MC just being the opinionless payment providers they ought to be.
• Regulation enforcing all payment providers to be similarly opinionless.
• Ethereum, or another crypto more suited to many, fast payments
• A layer-2 network over Bitcoin that can enable many fast payments, such as the lightning network.

Most of these are good, just for different things. I want waffle fries at the bar; I want shoestring fries at the burger place; I want wedges at the cafe on the corner.

Except the zigzags. I don’t think I’ve ever had a good zigzag.

Maybe something could be hacked together to fix copyright, but further complication there is just going to make accurate enforcement even harder. And we already have Google (in YouTube) already doing a shitty job of it and that’s… One of the largest companies on earth.

We should just kill copyright. Yes, it’ll disrupt Hollywood. Yes it’ll disrupt the music industry. Yes it’ll make it even harder to be successful or wealthy as an author. But this is going to happen one way or the other so long as AI can be trained on copyrighted works (and maybe even if not). We might as well get started on the transition early.

I got a lot of down votes, but ^ is exactly the point. A man being raped by a woman is so far outside of everyone’s thoughts that it doesn’t even cross their mind when seeing an image like this. But the same joke with genders reversed would get people with pitchforks.

I don’t think there was any actual rape here, as the comedian considers these encounters consensual. Which is the important bit factually. But if you couldn’t even imagine interpreting it that way then maybe you should think about why not?

Rape is a serious crime and jokes about it are part of the culture that encourages and enables it
