I wanted to buy something second-hand. Unfortunately, Facebook Marketplace is the shit where I live. So I thought I could quickly register, contact the seller, and delete my account afterwards.

However, I refuse to participate in this insanity. Video selfie my ass, Facebook.

The infuriating part is people willing to use Facebook at all.

And Facebook marketplace and buy nothing are helpful. We need to get people off that crappy platform.

I have a store in a small town that ONLY communicates though the book of faces. It is frustrating to say the least, but it seems like people on facebook assume that everyone is on facebook and the things on facebook are reflective of reality (they are not).

          They care quite a bit.

Bots and spammers make for miserable revenue generators. If you don’t distinguish your marks from your players, there’s no way to make money at the poker table.

Can’t really be a bit of both because they can’t confirm shit if they don’t know what you look like in the first place. It could be to confirm that you are human (and maybe that you don’t already have an account) but they can’t confirm your “identity”.

Would signing up with a PC instead of the mobile app solve that? A lot of PC’s don’t have webcams.

I’ve reported so many fake accounts and accounts promoting right wing violence or blatant racism and every single time they send a report back saying the account/comment doesn’t violate any rules.

I made an account over decade ago, never really used it even back then because I was suspicious even then. Then i tried logging in years after that and they demanded passport or some other identification to even let me log in.

So i sent them a picture i drew myself, i would post it here but i dont think i have the file anymore. It was basically like a mockup passport with picture of a clown and a stamp with picture of middle finger. I hoped they would just ban my account or something since that is about best I can hope. They would never abide by gdpr request and even if they say they did there is no way to know if they actually did.

I recently deleted it since my friends finally decided to move on from messenger to… Instagram.

Progress is progress right? Anyway I’m not planning on ever using the marketplace so hopefully I will never need an account again.

I cant comment on dead platform, but did you register on instagram for this reason, or was that an old account? in the former case you don’t have one less accounts. but then one could also argue whether deleting one meta service account and registering another makes a difference

It’s funny because I created an IG a year or so ago and I don’t recall it asking these questions.

Edit: don’t ask me questions that require logging in as I don’t know my password

Nope. Managed to stay off of it for my entire life so far. Reason for it was that back in '05 or a bit later one of the very first things I learned about the nascent Facebook, was Zuck’s famous “Dumb fucks” remark about his early users. I rightfully concluded that someone with such a mindset would be an absolutely plague on mankind and I would never willingly help them in any way, no matter how insignificant.

Same for me. I never understood what motivated that content and, by extension, why I should care about consuming it.

Ooo you had a cheeseburger tonight! IDGAF.

Some witty political insights! Fuck off.

Your child was born! Wonderful, send an email or an announcement card in the mail.

Large scale emergency! I’m going to a reputable news source; I don’t need user-curated echo chambers.

Old friends and acquaintances catching up? I’ve had the same cell phone number for 25 years. If they wanted to reach out, they can refer to the phone number I wrote in the yearbook.

              It’s just dumb.

I had one many years ago because my wife talked me i to it and ‘deleted’ it due to not using it after a couple years because it was showing me other things than just my contacts even back then. It was mostly a way to see my hogh school acquaintences and childhood friends who moved far away were still alive.

The superficial connections were fine, but not engaging like nearby friends. I have one friend who does post there and sometimes forgets to put it elsewhere, but my wife lets me know when he does.

Note: I put ‘deleted’ because there is zero chance they deleted anything other than the ability to log in.

I left FB before the pandemic and don’t regret it. When I still had an account, I had to verify my account by sending them my DL. I did it but blanked out my address and DL #. That was invasive enough. This is just insane.

“Oh no, now there’s a video of my face somewhere”

I’m not trying to be hurtful towards you, but I guess I’m pushing back in a general sense and you’re the comment I’m replying to.

At this point, it’s 2025… Every single thing about you including 3D models of your face is in a computer somewhere.

Look at the Luigi situation. Police tipped accidentally that they have advanced AI they’ve been using for a decade that we didn’t even know about.

I’m kind of saying guys… like yeah on paper not a good idea to upload your video… But when you critically examine it, what has harmed you? Nothing, your face is everywhere. If you have walked outside one time, your face is on 100 video cameras. And it’s never being deleted from their server.

Except that’s not what did it, and I suspect any such thing is shitty corporate bloatware. In the end, distinctive eyebrows and a good-old-fashioned snitch did him in. He wasn’t anywhere close to the radar before that.

Privacy defeatism was already fully going in the days of MySpace. That should tell you a bit about how empirical it ever was.
