Doesn’t matter, I won’t eat at Panera any more.

How many housecats do you have to eat before your palette becomes refined enough to discern the flavor?

Because of this or because it’s like 50% more expensive than it has any right to be?
Yes
Seems like a win for workers to me.
I’d like to hear from some of the Panera Bread employees about what type of boss Flynn is.
Win for Panera employees, loss for literally everyone else because it’s so thoroughly normalized for politicians to narrowly tailor laws to favor friends that such a high profile incident is not even raising any flags in political circles.

Well, it is, because newsom got an exception for restaurants with a standalone “bread” menu item and some caveats that basically made it only apply to Panera Bread.
(Incidentally, This is the essence how the whole federal tax codes and tariff schedules work)

The whole system is set up to prevent leaders who are good for the people from winning (primaries specifically, the only candidates who do well are those that corporate interests approve of). So you know we end up with a mix of bickering over inconsequential nonsense and people trying to convince us that giving up our liberties is actually good for us, to keep us away from what actually matters.

“California’s statewide minimum wage is $16 per hour. Newsom signed a law last year that says fast food restaurants that are part of a chain with at least 60 locations nationally must pay their workers at least $20 per hour beginning April 1. But the law does not apply to restaurants that have their own bakeries to make and sell bread as a stand-alone menu item.”
Is there a defendable explanation as to why making your own bread means minimum wage laws cannot be applied to businesses that otherwise meet these requirements?
It states why in the article.
The explanation:
Flynn has been a generous donor to Newsom’s political campaigns, including contributing $100,000 to fight a failed recall effort against the governor. Bloomberg reported that the two men attended the same high school. Flynn also acquired a resort managed by Newsom’s hospitality business in 2014, but terminated the management contract about a year after the purchase, according to the news outlet.
That is unfortunate. Absolute red meat for both-sides-are-bad politics.
Because unfortunately, both sides are bad and one side is leaning hard on the other side being so off-the-rails they’re openly ranting about how badly they want to lock up and kill minorities.
If you don’t see how the absolute deranged criminality of the right is helping change expectations about what corruption is, you’re naive.
Literally, your post proves it, you’re more concerned with how it will affect people who see criminality and corruption on both sides, instead of admitting “Yeah, both sides do corrupt shit, but it’s firmly clear one side is off the rails and readily wants to hurt people.” It’s really easy to not have to offer anything of substance to your constituents if all you have to say is “The other guys literally want to kill you” and you’re being honest when you say it.
Your comment is literally an example of letting it slide. “That is unfortunate.” No, its grifting and accepting bribery to carve out an exception for your fucking buddy, something you’d probably be screaming fucking bloody murder about if it was a Republican doing it. Guess what, we can cry bloody murder about both and not act like it’s time to just let corruption happen because it isn’t as bad as the other sides corruption.
What a joke.
I made my comment 2 minutes before yours so it’s wild to me that you read the real reason and still threw a fit with that wall of text. Y’all just live on outrage, huh?
This dude owns way more than just a few Panera bread and he was literally just trying to follow the law and even so he decided to go ahead and pay them anyways even though according to the lawyers, he probably could have gotten away with it but you’re right bOtH SiDeS ArE tHE sAmE
End the argument, or I will.
This dude owns way more than just a few Panera bread and he was literally just trying to follow the law and even so he decided to go ahead and pay them anyways even though according to the lawyers, he probably could have gotten away with it
Wait, you really think he was just going to do it if there wasn’t a big corruption uproar?
Random Internet Commenter Actually Reads the Response Challenge: Impossible.
End the argument, or I will.
Random Internet commenter so desperate to hate Democrats he has to go after donors challenge: Super Possible.
Shucky darn, how awful it is of me to critique the people I vote for.
I forgot, we’re all supposed to be cult members who never question authority… Wait a minute that sounds all too familiar…
Maybe we shouldn’t be angling to be just like the MAGA idiots in justifying our sides’ criminality.
Both sides are bad.
They’re just looking out for different rich people.
People say voting 3rd party is a waste, but voting democrat just slows the loss.
Losing is still losing, lol.
people gonna find out the hard way the libertarian party is funded by psychos.
the democrats are the best that the current voting system can deliver and we should make more efforts to implement an alaska style top 4 RCV system in the future. The way you prevent corruption of elected officials is to make it very easy to vote them out.
Just saying, I never mentioned libertarians.
Ranked-choice voting would be nice, but democrats don’t support it because they’re bad people.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranked-choice_voting_in_the_United_States
Tell me, which states have ranked choice voting and which states are run by the “bad people”?
We’re talking about California here
The libertarian are psychos. The next time you meet one and you determine that they aren’t just a Republican trying to have sex with a Democrat just mention to them “age of consent laws” and watch a small part of them die.
Absolute red meat for both-sides-are-bad politics.
Not exactly a secret that local economic interests dictate policies to career climbers in the political scene. This isn’t even a “both sides” thing. Its a “how does a democracy actually work in practice” thing. The Whigs operate like this. The UK Tories and Labour operate like this. The German Greens and the Spanish People’s Party operate like this. Its the baseline of liberal democracy the world over.
Not even close.
That is unfortunate. Absolute red meat for both-sides-are-bad politics.
Only if you really want it to be.
The real reason was because the law was specifically tailored for fast food, so to protect bakeries and other places it had the clause about the bread.
The law defines what a fast-food restaurant is, and says it is not an establishment that “operates a bakery that produces for sale on the establishment’s premises bread."
The donor was just confused if that meant him, ultimately he decided it probably did but that he’d pay them anyways.
But yeah this is totally the same thing as trump being friendly with Russia.
I like how Trump being so brazenly criminal has made it so we act like any other corruption just isn’t so bad and thus should be ignored.
And by “like” I mean it makes me want to fucking kill myself it’s so god damned stupid.
OK so now there’s corruption in checks notes, trying to obey the letter of the law. Interesting.
What proof do I have of this other than words you shat out onto a page? Maybe you’d have more people buying your version of the story if you bothered to produce even a shred of a link of evidence.
I’m supposed to just take the words of a random internet commenter at face value?
Well, both sides are bad. It’s just that one side is way, way worse.
Yeah…
He’s a neoliberal and gets donations from Panera…
Cali should be full of progressives. But there’s lots of money in being an incumbent in a seat the other party can’t win.
Hell, Pelosi and AIPAC just got another I to the Senate. He’ll keep taking donor money well after Pelosi is buried, and preventing a candidate that agrees with Cali voters from taking that seat for decades.
It can’t change till we get them out of power in the Dem party, but we can’t compete with their do ors money in a primary.
These days were lucky if we even get a primary.
Shit needs to change while it’s still able to change
We need money out of politics.
Money is always been and will always be the problem.
Subway must be stoked. They don’t have to raise pay, and Panera is getting all the heat.
Anyone that voluntarily eats at Subway was probably a lost cause to begin with.
Their build your own sub thing is pretty neat (if insanely expensive) Honestly between them, Jimmy Johns, and Jersey Mikes, I think they win.
Of the chain delis in the US, my vote is for Ike’s.
That said, the locally owned place that isn’t a franchise will almost always be a million times better than any of these chains.
If those are the choices, it doesn’t matter who “wins”, we all lose.
You know there are independently owned delis right?
You know not all of us are single hipsters who work from home in IT? Some of us just need a sandwich of known quality for a reasonable price quickly.
Cheaper to just make a PB&J then. A lot cheaper. Fast food is unreasonably priced now anyway.
Besides, I was more addressing the weird loyalty people have to chains, not them using it. People arguing over which chain sub shop is the best when they’re all about the same is weird.
I am so lucky to live in a redneck shithole that is also weirdly ethnically diverse since it means I can get damn near any food I want. Real shame I will just get a smashed potato bowl from KFC for the 3rd time in a row, atleast its real fucken cheap.
Reallllly? Jimmy John’s is super fast and their bread tastes delicious. Jersey Mike’s tastes amazing and fresh. Subway doesn’t taste fresh. It tastes like prepackaged deli meat, old veggies, and their bread is mediocre. So as far as sandwiches go, its s pretty lackluster affair.
I’d probably say: jersey Mike’s, Jimmy John’s, then waaaaaay down I’d put subway.
I only like Jimmy John’s because I can order a giant sandwich and they will bring it to me.
I also like Insomnia Cookies. They bring me a giant cookie and milk.
But yeah, I guess with all these delivery apps came more (better, local) options when I want something just for myself.
It’s also crazy expensive now though so I don’t eat anywhere ever, basically.
I have nothing to say about subway’s white bread, I only get their wheat bread, and the others not having spinach and olives is kinda a deal breaker for me. (Don’t take this for me being some kind of health nut, I just think this combo is tasty lol)
I like Subway’s selection or toppings & options the most. Spinach, guac, their “Southwest” dressing or whatever they call it, and you can get your subs toasted. Other places might have some of those things but not all. That being said, there are a couple local chains I prefer over Subway anyway.
To be honest, anyone taking a ‘snobbish’ approach to fast food sandwiches is probably a lost cause to begin with.
Subway wins because they have the best deals. Usually, there’s a code you can enter to get BOGO footlongs.
But you’re probably too proud to get ripped off to realize that.
I thought they stopped this build your own thing? I recall there was a backlash over it.
That would be silly. It’s like chipotle, everything is behind glass in the front and you tell em what you want while they make it.
https://www.businessinsider.com/subway-is-abandoning-customized-sandwiches-for-simpler-menus-2022-7
Here is the source. Maybe they backtracked this stupid decision.
That article also says:
The new sandwiches became available Tuesday, though customers can still make substitutions or create their own sandwiches.
If you walked into a store and ordered the classic black forest ham, by default it basically comes plain and you’re expected to pick out your own preferred toppings. But if you go in and order the new grand slam ham instead, it by default comes with a reasonable set of default toppings. You’re still allowed to customize but now a lot of people won’t need to.
And all this is moot for online ordering since the website does include default toppings for the classic sandwiches.
Nice meme.
I can tell you can think for yourself.
Subway sandwiches are pretty damn disappointing. People commonly say that for a real reason.
I say this as someone who used to work in a part of town that had two walkable options for lunch. 1) the office refrigerator, or 2) subway. I ate a lot of subway when I was too lazy to brown bag it. Having sampled that entire shitty menu, I can confidently say that place makes the saddest sandwich in town.
People commonly say that for a real reason.
Yeah, it’s because most people can’t think for themselves and just want to fit in with others.
I see it all the time.
Is this Jared Fogles’ prison account or something?
Do you just say nonsense as if you have a point?
I’m just saying that the way you are hyping up a bland sandwich corporation reminds me of a certain someone, is all.
If my dog could talk, this is what she would tell me after she ate cat shit.
Good job.
You fit in.
I guess that just means more turds for you.
Nice sarcasm. I can tell you have a favourite subway sandwich.
So? Lol.
Hey, lots of people have a favorite subway sandwich. It’s whatever one is regularly least disappointing! Sometimes it’s the only option for lunch :')
I’m only snarking them because they chose to live in America (bad mistake) and they said they’re in LA (they have options). They’re not a victim of circumstance, they’re a garbage seeking intercontinental shithead.
I’d like to shove a 6" honey-oat turkey breast and ham with lettuce, light mayo and black olives into your sarcastic mouth son
You think nobody thought of that, Jared? Why didn’t they find fish DNA in the tuna sandwiches? They can’t even legally call their bread “bread” in places with normal food laws.
It’s bad food, but as each new historical crime against humanity teaches us, you truly can get used to anything.
