Summary

The Trump administration faces a dilemma as skyrocketing egg prices due to bird flu have forced Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins to consider emergency imports.

With eggs now averaging $8 per dozen (up from $2.25 last fall), Trump may need to request imports from countries he’s recently antagonized—particularly Canada, the largest U.S. egg importer, which Trump has threatened with tariffs and annexation.

Other potential egg suppliers (Netherlands, UK, China) have also faced Trump’s recent hostility through tariffs or threats.

Meanwhile, Turkey plans to export 420 million eggs to the U.S., but this represents less than 5% of monthly U.S. production.

Why doesn’t the US just produce more eggs? Hell Trump could even strong arm the existing egg cartel and throw them in jail and nationalize egg production so that it’s more resilient (this isn’t a complicated concept, it’s only not done because it cost more money). If you are going to be a fascist, at least feed your people.

He’ll tariff the chickens, send the roosters to gitmo, and let Elon cut all funding to farming communities until they comply.

I dont think USA will be getting eggs because Doug Ford just threatened to cut power that we we supply to the US due to the tariffs going into effect tomorrow.

I didn’t support him. I am almost having an aneurysm every day from the lies and deceit that happen. Its going to suck for me and my family when we get the shitty end of the stick from all of this. HOWEVER, not only do I not blame any people or reps who would stand up to the cheeto mussolini but I encourage it. The only way the people who voted him in will learn is from how much it hurts.

I fear our country has fallen and will not be able to come back from it but I still have hope from our true allies.

What if we take our remaining eggs and force feed them to trump until he explodes. I would be willing to sacrifice my eggs for that

The egg thing is really strange to me. Are people eating a few eggs every single day? I usually buy an 18 count every few weeks at most.

I understand that eggs are used in a significant amount of products that aren’t just raw eggs, but the people complaining so loudly are probably not the businesses that use them.

The direct issue is the price on the shelf. People see it and get angry, but it raises the cost of a significant number of products in the store.

The other problem I see is that eggs are $8 a dozen and the shelves are FULL. That’s not a shortage driving the price-up scenario. That’s farmers doing a money grab.

If your self is mostly empty and their high priced, it’s super legit. If there’s no shortage week after week and the prices are 2x-3x it’s shenanigans.

You can have a full shelf with expensive eggs and be legit.

Their flocks are being decimated by H15N which is messing around with prices.

Prices go up, people refuse to pay for said prices, so they sit on shelves.

They could sell the eggs for less, but maybe its not profitable to do so, in which case, they are fucked, because they gotta sell them for a loss or not sell them at all.

All that being said - those greedy motherfuckers are probably raising the prices beyond the losses incurred by H15N to try and exploit everyone.

No. The cost of those eggs did not go up 4x. If your flock is decimated you do not have eggs to sell you are busy breeding.

A chick costs about 4 bucks, They make a profit the first week after they hit regular breeding cycle. It doesn’t work out as well for home gamers but at scale…

If you have eggs you can have chickens.

The price of meat didn’t go up 4x, meat is more directly impacted by loss of flock.

We’re seeing price collusion. It’s an opportunity to make four times their normal income.

Fuck em. I like inexpensive eggs and it’s not like they would send us shit if the shoe were on the other foot. Besides, we have a supply system and would effectively be subsidizing US exports with higher prices. So double fuck em.

Also… You don’t really need eggs. It’s not water or medicine or anything like that, they just need chicken periods because they nood something to gobble down beacon

At about 1,4$US for a dozen, why don’t you come visit instead?

Peanut fried fries, day fresh cheese curds, steaming thick chicken BBQ sauce with an over easy egg on top is worth the detour.

Been a couple times, would love to go again! Great food, nice people, great sights. Unfortunately, as a non-white person, leaving the States right now except for some permanent reason seems tenuous to me, and I’ve a family to consider.

Working on convincing everyone to move, but it’s tricky with jobs and pets and extended family kids…but we’ll see.

In the meantime, I’ve been buying eggs from local farmers directly for ~$5-$6 per dozen which is less than the store and half the time is basically a neighbor of mine.

One of the oldest addages: Don’t put all your eggs in one basket

The US is facing rising egg costs because their chicken farms are absolutely massive and susceptible to disease. Ironically a larget network of small farms results in stable prices.

This is a metaphor for all of capitalism.
