For something to pass as law, it needs the president’s signature. And I doubt trumpnis gonna sign a law that revokes his own policies. Which leaves the only option to get 2/3 majority in both houses.

    Not happening.

(Unless we trick him into going on a vacation somewhere, pass the bills, wait for him to ignore it for 10 days, then it automatically become law.)

It’s going to take years to get this fixed. It’s easier to destroy in such a short time than it is to rebuild and fix our government. We need a MASSIVE overhaul. This government can not naively rely on people with good faith in order to operate like it’s supposed to.

Honestly, I do agree with you on that but I also feel like any “system” is just never going to be the answer. The big lesson of all those Nepalis electing their new government over Discord isn’t that Discord is the way, it is that if huge numbers of people are engaged and willing to fight for what they need and then engage to set up something sensible, there’s a pretty good chance they’ll get it.

The American people – almost all of them, not 100% but the great majority – have just been checked out of the concept of being involved in making sure their country runs right for too many decades now for things to stay on the rails.

100% this. I give it 10-12 years from the point at which we finally get shit turned around. Seen it too many times before. it’s not yet a generation-level issue, but it’s getting there.

10-12 years is crazy optimistic, IMO. Especially if we consider the arsonists will likely get power again in that timespan. We spent like 80 years building the science, health and technology apparatus that’s been destroyed and anyone with the specialized knowledge forced out the door, won’t be so willing to return.

I predict the US will be dependent on Europe for forward progress, for a long time. Likely beyond our lifespans.

Well, I should specify that I don’t think there’s any return to anything even close to the 2001-2014 normal in the future. I mean simply finding some sort of new stability as a point from which people can move forward. A point at which the massive overhaul you’re talking about can start being a serious topic of conversation.

The bill to fund the Gestapo has been passed. Too late.

Trump’s tariffs are illegal though, and could / should / will be hopefully annuled.

    That’s assuming there’s a democracy left functioning.

“We can’t go too liberal too fast! The country would resist it!”

Meanwhile, Republicans are regressing at a mile a minute, while we squander our opportunities by casually strolling towards rights we’ve already gained and lost again over the past hundred years.
