  • I don’t live in the us so I can’t comment on any change that has been or not been.

I do know that privilege itself obscures experience. Compassion and empathy are built on experience. Therefore expecting someone who is privileged to have compassion or empathy to those without the same privilige is unrealistic. They have to be shown, or brought to a point where they can align their experience with others.

  • After the black Saturday fires in Australia, many home owners who were insured discovered to their horror that they were under insured

The value of their possessions and the repair value of their home had increased but they hadn’t increased the level of insurance coverage to match. Despite suffering total losses, many have been unable to afford to rebuild.

This has been in the back of my mind seeing the LA fires. This is just the beginning. It will take decades for some of these people to re establish.

  • Site size doesn’t matter; prosecution of the actual people who are associated with it still occurs.

There is practically zero risk for users of lemmy instances, but those who host the instance are identifiable through domain registration, hosting or similar.

I don’t blame the admins for acting in self interest - ultimately they’re putting in the effort and wear the risk.

If you don’t agree with it you’re welcome to host your own instance - with blackjack and hookers etc.

  • Hold on, think this one through.

The admins aren’t worried about jury nullification per se. They’re worried about what regulatory authority can do - shut down the instance, hold admins personally accountable etc - if the instance is classified as a media source + has content which could influence a jury.

This is no different from the advice given to other media outlets globally.

Maybe spin it this way. If the very act of having articles celebrating his actions on lemmy.world means his defense is compromised would you be OK with that?

  • Not the most manipulative but

Keep a log of the birthdays, hobbies and names of spouses and children of colleagues, managers, team members and customers.

I learnt this from a guy who did executive search. People remember you, when you remember what is important to them.

When I’ve lead teams it’s one of the first things I find out - note down when someone says “yeah Gary that’s my hubby, he’s super into gaming”

    • Gary (husband.)
    • likes gaming

When you’re a manager, your teams families, partners and friends know your name. Reciprocating that - learning who is important to them - is really important.

  • Orrrr…hear me out here

This is a news article about a set of social media posts and has absolutely no link or relevance to the voting register.

you know the cool thing about people voting? You know who has voted and in what age group they are. Then you can look at the age group and say things like hmmm wow thats weird there are like 34 million people in the US between 18 and 24, but only 7 million of them voted, I wonder if the other 27 million would have swayed the margin on an election decided by hundreds of thousands of votes

Young people aren’t participating yet they have the most skin in the game. It’s daft.

Imo Implement compulsory voting, introduce third parties that can act as a protest vote, watch what the fuck happens. Suddenly the major parties have to be accountable outside their base.
