That’s exactly what he’s testing. With SCOTUS continuing to slowly expand the limits of presidential power (even if they haven’t fully accepted the Unified Executive theory), they keep pushing against the guardrails, seeing how much they can get away with.

Humphrey’s Executor was lined up for execution in May with the ruling to stay the lower courts decision to preventing the heads of the NLRB and MSPB from being fired, and I believe they’ll attempt to execute it by firing Powell. Sure, SCOTUS said that they were only ruling in regards to the cases in front of them, but it’s hard not to read how SCOTUS has been ruling as anything other than support for the administration’s plans.

Yeah, I don’t get the “trumpf will fire Powell” thing. He has no authority over the Fed, right?

Yes, I get he can apply pressure indirectly, but that’s not the same as having the power to fire anyone at the Fed. So this sounds like the media trying to grant trump the appearance of more authority than he has, which is a bad thing.

I’m hopeful Powell will stick out his term and continue to do make the best decisions he can.

The Supreme Court ruled a little while back that the president can fire pretty much any employee of any federal agency for any reason with the fed chair being the sole exception. They ruled Powell can only be fired “with cause” which is why Trump made a stink about a new fed building a week ago, calling it “misappropriation of funds”. It was just the pretext to fire him.

Oh totally agree it’s a way to steer the media. It’s all distraction like WWE to stop people talking about Epstein.

Hell he’s been talking about firing Powell even in his first term for raising rates too quickly.
