The moderators of a pro-artificial intelligence Reddit community announced that they have been quietly banning “a bunch of schizoposters” who believe “they’ve made some sort of incredible discovery or created a god or become a god,” highlighting a new type of chatbot-fueled delusion that started getting attention in early May.
If I’ve learned anything from Pascal’s Wager, it’s that we should definitely believe one (and only one) of them, because if they’re right and they are god, we’ll get rewarded!
I have a friend who dropped down this rabbit hole in a matter of weeks once he started using it. He’s no longer a friend these days because every conversation is about how “his” AI is capable of “anything”. I would ask him what it could do that a person couldn’t, but he never had a real answer, just buzzwords bouncing around in his head.
So, it’s toxic to our brains, our communication channels, our privacy, our economy, our artistic pursuits, our education system, our basic dignity as people… remind me why we’re so excited to make this fucking thing as quickly and recklessly as possible?
No one invents a thing and asks themselves, “what if every fuck-head in the world got their hands on this?”
And maybe they should… but they done invented cars and internet and AI, and it was fine when it was just a few nerds getting together and having a good time and whatnot. But then they go and let every nitwit with kindling and two neurons to rub together get their hands on that shit and they fucked everyone.
It’s genuinely useful if you know how to use it 🤷♂️
More importantly, it’s the first real society-level paradigm shift since the internet, really, and provides the most effective platform for the rich to suck even more of the wealth up to the top of the system. They haven’t seen returns like this since the dotcom bubble.
We might need able to put a whole lot of people out of work and make the rich even richer!
Some people should just not be allowed on the Internet.
