The “gun show loophole” is the ability to own a gun without the government knowing you own a gun. In order to actually close this non-existent loophole all guns would have to be registered and registered guns are confiscated guns.
Nah. It’s the ability to buy a new gun without getting a background check. All this means is that it’s a little bit harder for convicted felons to get guns, and a little bit more work is required for private sellers. Very much a worthwhile tradeoff.
Are there any actual statistics that show that this new regulation will decrease illegal gun sales? AFAIK law-abiding citizens already follow the law. All this will do is once again increase the burden placed on people trying to practice one of their constitutional rights. Unless you can provide statistics that indicate this will actually work?
Congress banned spending federal funding on that kind of research at the behest of the NRA decades ago. What do do know is that about 1/5 of guns sales happen without a background check, and that felons all know that this is an easy way to avoid having one.
False. Congress banned the CDC from doing this kind of research. The FBI does perform crime statistics analysis as part of it’s Congressional mandate, available at https://cde.ucr.cjis.gov. I am well aware of the stats myself, and there is no correlation between violent crime rates and increased firearms regulations. If you are going to violate people’s constitutional rights, you damn sure better have stats to back it up. At the very least.
The government doesn’t explicitly know if you have a gun or not. You know how many people I know on state medical marijuana programs who have guns and buy new guns? Laws as written that’s a felony but no ones checking, there is no registry. Im pretty pro gun for the lemmy crowd but as far as I can tell the government not keeping a list.
I’m merely stating that for the “gunshow loophole” to be closed it would require all guns to be registered. The loophole is private sales not requiring background checks, but the only way to make that enforceable would be to require all guns to be registered.

Depending on the felon they likely have far easier access to guns than finding a private sale at a gun show.

There is a very tight relationship between firearms ownership and probability of suicide and killing spouse/family members.
And that loophole is private sale. If you required background checks for private sale it would necessitate registration for it to do anything.
