So a humane prison should get the prisoners out of bed and doing something productive.

While you definitely should be able to get a full night’s sleep, sleeping all day (at least consistently) could lead to physical and mental problems. So a humane prison should get the prisoners out of bed and doing something productive.
They should provide something productive to get them out of bed, not get them out of bed to be productive.
I feel like that statement is the crux of all human existence right now.
