Forced arbitration means any legal disputes you may have with Discord must be resolved through a single third party mediator, who 99% of the time is chosen by, and will rule in favor of, the corporation/Discord. This effectively removes all your legal rights as a consumer, because arbitration decisions are legally binding and non-appealable.

The new ToS goes into effect April 15th, 2024.

YOU CAN OPT OUT OF ARBITRATION. You must email arbitration-opt-out@discord.com BEFORE MAY 15TH (30 days after ToS effective date) with your username stating that you wish to opt out of the arbitration clause. Once May 15th passes you are bound to arbitration with Discord forever.

Opt-out before it’s too late.

Serious question, Why would I ever expect to be in a law suit or arbitration with discord? Nothing I do on the service is critical or would come with monetary damages to me if something happened. I use it to chat with people I barely know from video games and give them 0 dollars.

Serious question if you know you don’t engage with discord deeply why do you think anyone here should care about your pointless question?

Because once you sign this TOS nothing’s stopping them from doing the most obnoxious and illegal business practices to you and you’ll be fucked. Like getting you into a lifetime contract of nitro or whatever, you really can’t trust a for profit company with this stuff

I’ve never given them money and never would though. How would I be fucked? I can stop using Discord right now and probably will. Law suits are over monetary damages so what possible damage can they do to me that I could sue for?

Good question, but: Why would Discord ever expect to be in a lawsuit or arbitration with you? Most people, like you, use it to chat with people they barely know and give them no money. Still discord think it is necessary to take away legal rights from all their users.

Can you think of a single class action law suit or other law suit I’d ever need to file? What would be damages to me? They don’t even have my real name. You can only sue over monetary damages.

I honestly can’t imagine what Discord can do to me that would include provable monetary damages to me personally or monetary damages to me as part of a class action. Otherwise I wouldn’t have asked. A lifetime subscription to Nitro would just make me cancel my credit card not require a law suit. We don’t have a net 30 relationship it’s prepaid.

“I dont need rights, because i anyways dont exercise them”

Good on you, but what about the rest of us? Ever think that this law is not tailored to you?

This is a huge non sequitur about me accepting an arbitration clause or not because of you and your rights. You’re not even in America based on a comment in this thread.

You seriously don’t understand what a law suit is. They require provable monetary damage to collect. I’m seriously asking what that could be in the realm of reality and the examples given wouldn’t be worth retaining a lawyer for. I actually would prefer a arbitration in the cases presented to me. It is closer to what they do in Europe. Law suits are expensive and the only person who gets paid is the lawyer in cases like this.
