I’m old(ish) so maybe I’m out of touch but I don’t see anything good from any short form video. Tiktok, YT shorts whatever. I hate them all.

It’s like we’re trying to train people to have ADD.

cable TV already trained our brains to digest TV shows in 10 minutes pieces and then consume 10 30 second commercials.

don’t really see how that’s any better or different than my tiktok feed.

Agreed. Some people might say it’s not all bad, there is valuable information there. To anyone that thinks that, sit down, and try to remember this valuable information. I bet you forgot about it two minutes after you saw it, because it’s not actually that good not do you need it

Not wrong entirely, but these bills are more than just “banning ticktok,” and are creating more legal spying while being overtly simplified to just seem like not a big deal. The US is making a new Patriot Act that covers more modern communication systems. They are just doing the same old “red scare” shit to paint China as the “authoritarians” for spying on us. But it always paints our global and local spying as being “the price of freedom” or whatever.

I’m old too and the longerform tiktoks are quite good if you have trained the algorithm.

I see it as being more like a long form of photograph rather than a short form of video.

I made the decision to block it a while ago so I don’t visit it. In fact, it’s blocked at the DNS level inside my house right or wrong. Wish I could laser in on YT Shorts / FB reels to cut/block them. I wish as a paying customer of YT I could disable shorts from my feed longer than 30 days.

I watch a TON of longer form YT, and while, of course, there is algorithm in play here, I have 100s of subscriptions and mostly watch those channels exclusively. I branch out when I’m just filling time mindlessly or the available content is watched with my wife and she’s not here etc…

I’m sure I blocked tiktok when it was only short form. I also did it so my son couldn’t get to it. Until he got an iPhone he was completely prevented from installing/visiting it. My wife now controls this parental bits (as a fellow drone… Err, iPhone user), and while the app is not allowed on his phone, I’m not sure if he can get to it via the browser.

They added support for longer videos and the algorithm works better than YouTube in my case. I have a feed of recent videos from the people I follow rather than old, new, sponsored and/or recommended videos that YouTube shows even in my subscriptions feed. The main problem I see is minors having access to TikTok (and social media in general), and TikTok should pay attention to this. I still agree with you, but I won’t deny how digestible TikTok has made a lof of information that would, otherwise, be lost and that I can share with my friends easier that sharing a YouTube link and everyone ignoring it.

Counter-point video is the worst way to learn/transmit information. Unless you are looking specifically for a video based meme, then reading is better.

It’s way more about entertainment than information. At the moment my feeds half ful of these videos of husky dogs looking at the northern lights.

That said, I find it quite handy for giving you leads to follow up yourself. It was on the Jordan airdrops before mainstream media hit them, there are scientists with cool snippets of their work.

And that guy Dr Karan seems to be right about all his content. I’m never going to read on the toilet again.

That is something that is said like common wisdom but even if true, video is a slower way to learn the same amount of information versus reading. Plus monetized video (almost all of them) are going to have a ton of filler content just to hit minimum length metrics, plus sponsors, etc etc.

In addition reading is a better way to get details. If you just want surface level understanding and are basically just wasting time, then sure watch a video. Don’t confuse the understanding you get from the video as worth anything and realize that most videos are just people talking, in which case just reading the transcript and looking at any diagrams they may have would be faster.

The current set of bills are looking to actually be a modern revival of the old Patriot Act. Just with much much more spying on US citizens and users of VPNs. I am betting that we will see a lot of torrent sites and other file sharing/streaming sites banned and will massively benefit orgs like the MPAA/RIAA and other copyright outfits. Get sites banned and say they “aid our enemies” and shit will be much worse. So legal censorship and oppressing the masses at the whim of the capitalists.

China’s such a ridiculously hypocritical government. It’s laughable the shit that comes out of their mouths sometimes.

I don’t like short form video, or ultra-personalization. I prefer reverse-chron posts, and content that is useful. That’s why I use Mastodon and PixelFed, and even long form youtube (via my Sub page). I avoid IG these days, or anything that’s pure recommendations. So if they ban tiktok, I won’t be that unhappy…
