If you want to be vegan, more power to you. But please talk to your doctor first (and optionally do a bunch of reading from non-specifically-vegan sources about how the food is grown). The nutrition-feasibility, health benefits, and current, real-world environmental impact are frequently and loudly lied about by vegans.

This is more of a rant than a shitpost. There are some extremely vocal groups in regards to veganism and their followers can be equally annoying. I would hesitate to only limit scope to just Americans though.

Proselytism, bigotry or someone that is domineering is just annoying across the board. A healthy argument or discussion is one thing, but being a jackass is something completely different.

I tried posting to Unpopular Opinion@lemmy.world, but the submitting is broken (both on Firefox and on Edge)

I’m not vegan but I severely limited my meat consume in the last years (for environmental reasons) and it’s really the other way round.

When I’m in a restaurant with someone and order something without meat 9/10 times I have to explain myself. And most of the times people are telling me that they couldn’t forego meat as they like it too much…

Same experience here. Vegans are usually chill, but people act like a dog defending their food bowl when it comes to eating meat.

Christianity in the US actively contributes to almost every major problem facing our country whereas veganism improves the environment, reduces the suffering of some life and annoys some people. Sure, like any group of people vegans can be liable to groupthink and sometimes wrong about things. But you’re ignoring a whole bunch of reality if you think both vegans and evangelicals are equally harmful.

My point is that being annoying isn’t the same as being annoying and actively harmful.

If your main complaint about vegans is that they’re patronizing, that still doesn’t put them in the same category as say, the catholic church or the evangelical movement which have protected rapists, encouraged violence and spread hate.

No but doing it because you think it actually helps anything means that you’re at best far more naive than all those organizations.

They send the young folks out on mission trips because they know damn well it will lead to them being treated with little patience and eventually lead to them being jaded into turning inwards towards the in group.

American vegans are either doing it because they’re morons or because they are equally aware and just as complicit trying to foster an in group out group dynamic, something that becomes much clearer when they insist on calling even vegetarians carnists for not being vegans too.

Not to mention the cult of “no trust us bro we can totally do ethical consumption under capitalism! Meatless Mondays definitely aren’t basically just the recycling effect for millennials and Zoomers!”

And again, the point is that we’re talking about the patronizing bullshit that they are objectively doing right now, “but the Catholics do rape!” isn’t a part of the discussion when we’re talking about being a patronizing twat who treats everyone not of the faith as their next mission.

We are talking about the bad thing that we both agree that they are doing it seems, so please, stay on topic.

American vegans are either doing it because they’re morons or…

Or they don’t want to hurt animals unnecessarily or be complicit in the environmental devastation of meat production.

they insist on calling even vegetarians carnists for not being vegans too.

I’m a vegetarian and I’ve never heard vegans say that. The craziest online voices are not an accurate representation of a group.

ethical consumption under capitalism! Meatless Mondays

Wait vegans hate vegetarians AND love people who eat meat 6 days a week? You’re accusing them of being fanatically doctrinal and too accepting. When you accuse a group of mutually exclusive traits, you’re thinking of a stereotype and not reality.

I’ve been vegetarian for 20+ years and have recieved nothing but love and support from vegans. Even one person I knew that was so committed she changed her last name to Govegan. I did recieved some chastisement from a plant based person for not knowing the difference between plant based and vegan, but they were also very anti-vegan.

How many vegans does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

    Two.

One to screw in the lightbulb and the other to tell everybody they are vegan.

Ah yes, wanting to not hurt animals and wanting other people to stop needlessly hurting animals is totally on the same level as thinking being gay is a sin and that women are inferior to men and that slavery is ok as long as it’s the ancient israelites doing it. Truly an enlightened take, thank you for sharing your wisdom

You said that two incredibly different things were very similar because of a single trait they share with many other things. Many people are going to point out the laundry list of significantly more important differences in contrast to the one similarity you see.

I joined a local vegan group for some recipes because I have some dietary restrictions.

You know what they post about?

    •Foie Gras is bad

•Where the FUCK can I buy a good breakfast

Seriously, these people just have this insane fixation on breakfast foods, and how much better they taste when someone else cooks them for you.

Just stop focusing on the noisy ones and try giving people the benefit of the doubt. You might be surprised at how nice people can be.

often a toxic, blatantly lying, proselytizing cult when in a group

This describes a hell of a lot of American things.
