Whut? In the first couple paragraphs they reference Putnam’s Bowling Alone. Putnam isn’t on TikTok is he?

why would you hang out in person when you can hang out virtually/in a game from the comfort of your own home? you dont even need to get dressed up (or dressed at all)

Besides it simply being different and other details others might bring up, it can also just be cheaper and simpler depending on your situations. No technical issues to sort through (“sorry my internet’s acting up/i think the servers are down”/etc.) and no need for hardware at all to simply communicate and do whatever in the same space.

other than the hardware needed to get to the hangout spot/restaurant/etc, the added cost of getting there/buying whatever to participate in the hanging out

seems more like an article funded by a restaurant association or something

If Americans were happy—about themselves, about their friends, about their country—then whining about parties of one would feel silly.

But for Americans in the 2020s, solitude, anxiety, and dissatisfaction seem to be rising in lockstep.

I wonder if cause and effect are backwards here. If you know there’s a good chance that going out and socializing is going to lead to you getting cornered by a loudmouth bigot maybe you stay home and shitpost instead.

It’s not really an option anymore. You can’t just exist anywhere outside of a home without eventually being harassed for doing so unless you’re continuously spending money at the location. And with everything being so damn expensive that just makes it not an option. Also living spaces have gotten smaller and smaller for most people. There isn’t a cozy basement full of beanbag chairs and bongs. It’s a 700sft apartment with too many people already. Forget having a back yard. Ain’t nobody trying to come over to “hang out”. Hit me up in VRChat or something.
