Late to the party, but I can literally pinpoint the exact moment that it became popular. It was a Mandy Flores step son video that was really well done as far as acting went. It really introduced it in a way that probably got a lot of people into it. I can’t stand it, but even I will admit it was a good video for the time because it was more like a teasing video with good acting if you can get past the step stuff
That single video went despacito-esque top of the chart for literally a year. A few months after that video, they started popping up and 2 years later we are at the point where literally 50% of professional content is step-something.
I removed reference video because of rules, I realized. It is #1 most viewed on the hub of all time
