      As evidenced by US citizens unwillingness to describe themselves as immigrants, instead using the moniker “expatriate” even though they’re immigrating to another country.

      Immigrant has always been a racial slur.

        I think technically Ex-pat means they will go back to their home country, immigrant is to stay in the new country.

          if that’s the case, why are white rich british people retiring in the french countryside called expats, but not temporary foreign workers?

            Technically that’s what I’ve heard it means. But yes we all know that it’s white people that use the term because they don’t want to call themselves immigrants.

          They are expats to the people in the country they left, and immigrants in the country they went to. I don’t know why people think the word expat is some kind of racism-lite.

            The term is often used by white people to refer to themselves when they immigrate to a new country. “I’m an expat” they say as they permanently settle into a new country.

              Currently living outside the US expat is primarily used by anyone not brown regardless of how long they’re staying
