The ones I encounter certainly. I don’t hang out on Reddit anymore, but I have had a glance now and again and one of the more noticable things are that my own national subreddit there are a lot of right wing/alt right viewpoints loudly touted. In the posts I encounter on lemmy, at least in the sphere I am a part of, it is much more of a leftist general vibe. I don’t mind too much.

While echo chambers are not great, it is quite refreshing to have a break from the hate. Or at least have the hate directed in a way I am more comfortable with, I guess.

Nuance has gone out of the window over on Reddit. Everything is black and white now there are no shades of grey and there’s no context. Which of course is the right loves, they never like actually thinking about their world views.

I’m apolitical, but from what I notice, almost everyone on this platform is extreme left. They are types that don’t even get triggered by you having to say something that relates to the right. They get triggered if you simply say something that doesn’t conform to the left.

They don’t like the science of biology

    They hate guns

They rather be animals than humans

Whatever propaganda the government’s pushing, despite ironically not liking the government, they support.

This sounds more like you’re painting over all of Lemmy with a hard-core leftist/?furry? brush. That’s not necessarily what I’ve seen, though I’ve only been here a month vs over a decade on reddit. I like guns and science but do still consider myself a liberal.

No… how do you get that from what I’ve said. We should out talk them, the example post given is very easy to poke holes in. People can and do change their minds, but only when challenged. Giving up, slapping a label on and holding moral superiority just grows their side. While you get to feel good about calling them a nazi. Doesn’t help anyone and just pushes them further down that hate filled mindset. You beat hate with compassion and conversation, not more hate.

“There will always be nazis” is pretty fatalistic. And beside that point, why can’t we do both? Poking holes in their dingbat ideology and shaming them for how vile they are are by no means mutually exclusive.

Okay, so feel free to start de-radicalizing them. Go ahead, be my guest, I will happily support you doing that just like I have in all the other threads where people attempt that. I’ll just patiently wait right here while you get on practicing what you preach.

Seriously though, if they don’t wanna be called a nazi, maybe they shouldn’t do stuff like advocate for the implementation of nazi policies. Sure the centrist line about ‘labeling everything you don’t like a nazi devalues the term’ probably has some degree of merit, but that’s not whats happening here. They’re just a regular old far-right authoritarian whackjob troll and pointing out the festering hatred that even lemmy, with it’s much less toxic community compared to reddit or twitter, still has lurking in the userbase is important.

Besides, there’s no way for them to be more radicalized. They’re already a transphobic pro-oligarchical eugenicist with a gun fetish that desperately LARPs as a rich white woman by posting stolen shots of prop money and expensive cars. How much worse could they actually be?

I’ll say this, when I was in college I had a particularly silly, in my mind, professor. It was a general cultural anthropology class my freshman year. The teacher spoke about a study done with babies. It had to do with how baby boys and baby girls could crawl at the same speed. But mostly about how the parents assumed the boys would do better. The case showed they crawled around the same speed and their motor skills developed at roughly the same pace. He then used that to extrapolate that women have the same physical capabilities as men. Society telling them otherwise is the only reason they aren’t winning strong man competitions, competing at the same level in the Olympics, etcetera. I believe I am a liberal but I dont think any suggestion regarding biology is automatically anti trans. I think promoting ideas like that professor did are disingenuous and harmful to both sides honestly.

While I don’t think the two sexes have the same physical capabilities, I dislike how being a woman is such a hyperspecific category in sports like someone could be born AFAB and lived as a woman their entire life only to be found as intersex in some test and now they’re automatically a man and should use masculine pronouns.

And as someone who is AFAB, growing up I was often discouraged from going outside, and the gym was off-limits, which would’ve been a disadvantage for me if it wasn’t for calisthenics. It’s not like the physical strength of a man and woman is so far apart either. Some people even claim that an out-of-shape man can overpower a trained woman. In Tug-of-War I’m able to win against an AMAB and I haven’t had any HRT yet lol

I hear you and respect what you’re saying. The difference on average is about 40%-60% based on what I’ve been able to find. In that, the average male is about 40%-60% stronger than the average female. Alot of that is based on ability to accrue muscle mass. Thats not to say some men are on the low end and some women are on the high end. Sure, you can beat a guy at a tug of war but thats not how population averages work. I’ll link one study that shows this but I promise many more exist as well. My position is not that women shouldn’t be in the gym, participating in sports or doing physically active things. My position is that when facts about the world are ignored, the speaker and their side are going to lose credibility.

No you didn’t say anything wrong re: women participating in physical activities, it’s just that the professor had a point. Not that the two sexes have the same physical capability or ceiling (your professor didn’t even factor puberty and hormones), but that women aren’t as strong as they could be because of how society treats them differently. Lots of girls aren’t even allowed to go outside and play rough for example. Because they don’t become as physically capable it becomes a feedback loop where people assume they are weak so they are discouraged from physically demanding activities.

And me mentioning the Tug-of-War thing wasn’t about what you said but a statement against the people I mentioned beforehand who claimed that the physical disparity was so high that an out of shape man can beat a trained woman.

Obviously, your story is the other extreme, but I rarely see that side of the discussion.

Like, if I take a single user that I consider to exemplify each? Yes, the lemming will be left, socially and economically, of the redditor.

If we take a statistical average of each? The lemmy average will be screamingly farther left of the reddit average.

If we exclude bots and take the averages of only human users of each? Farther apart than the first but not nearly as far apart as the the second.

What am I basing this on? Multiple years of modding one of the larger not-explicity-political subs and also two explicitly political subs. So, vibes, basically, but lots of them over a long time.

            I don’t understand tankies…

Like dude, it’s so clear russia and cccp are not left leaning! They are foremost self-serving!

This is like calling the Nazis left leaning because they had a few social policies.

Also, I mean I also like soviet aesthetics, it doesn’t mean that I am going to ass lick their authoritarian asses.

            • People lack nuance.

Its basically the opposite of Cuban Americans, who lived in a self-proclaimed “communist” regime and therefore hates anything remotely associated with “the left”, and thinks conservatism is somehow “pro-freedom”.

Tankies on the internet are mostly westerners who, because they disagree with the way their country does things, decides to hate everything about their country and “the west” in favor of the “other side”

              It’s Campism

As a Chinese-American, I see through the bullshit of both China and the US, the different flavors of nationalism, I have my own experience in the first decade of my life there, as well as my relatives’ direct testimonies, including two of them who are my parents who, even tho has biases in worldview, generally has truthful information, and also my aunts who are still in China and has regular contact with my parents, and the various friends of my parent who frequently travel to and from China, that, along with my experience growing up in the US, I have a more knowledged worldview than either a Mainland Chinese who spent their entire life in China, or a Westerner who’ve never lived life in China from the PoV of a local.

I know that both countries have their issues, but I do know that, it’s a consensus amongst the Chinese Diaspora (those that I know, anyways) that western countries are typically better than whatever “communist” (which isn’t even communist, they are State Capitalist) thing they got going on in China. The west isn’t perfect, xenophobia and racism does exist, as always when you mix people from different backgrounds, but if you get over that hurdle, find somewhere relatively liberal/progressive, things are usually better. And also I know enough about what the acual economic system in the “communist” country is actually like, and not become an idiot that supports far-right “anti-communists” xenophobes, like… wtf people, stop siding against your own right to live in the country.

Most people don’t get the opportunity to live in both worlds, and lack of information is how people form those extremist views, either completely believes that their country is always right all the time, or completely believes their country is always wrong all the time and that therefore the other side is right. Reality is much more nuanced.

They exist on Lemmy, though your home instance may be blocking them or their home instances, or you just may not have seen them. lemmy.world has a fair few instances on their block list. I’ve had to block a few of the more egregious MAGA communities myself.

Remember, Lemmy (as a network) is censorship resistant, not censorship free.

      • I think that one originally was started for conservatives, but then it got abandoned and someone asked the admins if they could have it to make it a satire sub. Also, your instance does block a fair bit of comms, including ones that are for right-wing (like communities with taglines or website names about being racist and misgendering people) or tankies.

conservative communities/subs die very fast if they cant crosspost, or troll on other lemmy threads or instances. because to survive as a rigid echo chamber they need the left to argue with.

          • Probably none that aren’t like someone’s personal self-hosted server intended for only them. I doubt I’d want to join such either. And any that don’t probably get blocked by other comms anyways, so it wouldn’t really matter.

I’d say there’s a wider spectrum on reddit, if only because reddit is so much bigger. Lemmy is mostly center left while reddit goes everywhere.

Yeah that seems to be the case. If lemmy were larger it would probably have a wider variety. When conservatives get banned on reddit I think they go to Twitter or 4chan. Whereas liberals may flock here.

Well since reddit pretends to be far right (and full of bots which is another topic but also renders reddit fake & useless), and most of us are here because Reddit was intolerant of our defiance to adhere to its right-wingedness, yeah I’d say fediverse is left. We’re free people who refuse to have our free-thinking & free speech squashed.
