I switched over since I heard it was more privacy friendly than YouTube and have been using the platform for a while without issues, but this cookie banner just popped up. You can opt-out of things like “Access precise geolocation data” but a lot of other information is still shared by third parties and not opt-outable.
It seems “Reject All” is the correct choice here, but I’m not sure if it is the best choice for browser users who have to constantly log back into their accounts.
Use Librarian instead, if you must.
Thanks, YouTube frontends aren’t really working well for me right now so this will do great.
LBRY also uses a crypto back end, and LBRY coin (their crypto) is what odysee used before being bought out by Arweave. I wouldn’t recommend either, personally.
Odysee uses LBRY as a backend to deliver videos. Librarian, meanwhile, is a privacy-respecting frontend for LBRY; like Invidious.
Please be aware, Odysee was recently purchased by a Crypto company that also acquired an NFT company.

I would not recommend investing any time or money into the platform, as it will inevitably crash and burn as the owners walk away flush with cash while everyone else is left holding the bag.
Peertube is not ideal, but it is currently the only alternative that isn’t tied to a shady crypto scheme.
This should be the top comment.
Then again, it’s no surprise to see fascist platforms being recommended by sh.itjust.works users. What a cesspool that instance is.
It literally wasn’t recommended by OP. I know nothing about that instance, just stating the (hopefully) obvious in this case.
Not sure what you’re suggesting, but I didn’t recommend it.
Got it, thank you.
They tried to make it with “respecting privacy” and all that shit that they never really cared about yo begin with and was just bullshit to try to get people to switch over. Now, they’re going the other route where they’re just another data mining platform like YouTube. Use Tubular. It’s a frontend for YouTube without the bullshit. You just can’t sign in and comment. Or you can use GrayJay. It connects to several platforms at once, like YouTube, rumble, Odessy…etc
Plus, Grayjay is made in part by the guy in the post picture
Why does Odysee have 836 advertising partners?
Because it’s not a privacy-respecting company? I mean, isn’t precise location access a red flag already?
Are there any alternatives I should consider? PeerTube seems really empty so I’m not sure what I should switch over to.
If u simply want a better yt frontend then there is tubular wich is a sponsor block fork of newpipe with some extras. Then on desktop u can use any of the various nvidious frontends.
I use tubular cos it works with peertube so ive started to replace the few yters that do publish for it with the peertube version and uts all part of thr same feed.
There are no other big platforms. There was a very extensive discussion about it recently. Making a service like YouTube is extremely expensive and not even very profitable. YouTube exists because Google has the resources to maintain it and it’s too important for everyone to shut it down.
You can either use YouTube with a ton of privacy hardening (using a private browser or a VPN) or host videos on your own website.
It seems like I will start using a YouTube frontend. It’s really sad that Google doesn’t have any competitors in this area.
i use freetube for desktop and newpipe for android and i couldnt be happier
Wait I thought you wanted to make videos. If not then there are various YouTube frontends with various levels of privacy. I use Piped/LibreTube but it’s probably the least convenient one out there. You can just use a VPN tbh.
YouTube was Google’s competitor, or rather the other way around. Then Google bought them. I can imagine they’d do that to others if they could.
Content creators have to earn money somehow. But the fediverse seems very against capitalism, so I don’t know how it will attract people who want to make a living creating content if everybody tells them it’s wrong.
There’s nothing stopping creators from doing sponsored videos and/or sharing their liberapay/opencollective/patreon on peertube, they even provide a dedicated place for it.
Most of the youtubers I follow claim YouTube’s direct compensation makes up very little of their overall income, especially since YouTube keeps lowering the compensation/demonetizing everything. Most of their income comes from sponsored videos, patreons, and merch sales. Maybe it depends on the youtuber but it seems consistent with those I follow.

You can upload to PeerTube. I use GrayJay so I can follow PeerTube people and YouTube people and follow the creator no matter where they move platforms.
Grayjay on Android. It’s open-source and it doesn’t cost a lot (you can download for free but they expect you to pay at some point). Louis Rossman works for FUTO which makes Grayjay (and other cool apps)

Be careful… Don’t just click “Reject All.” There’s a category called “Legitimate Interest” that will still be enabled.
It was meant to be a way for websites to collect relevant data for adjusting content to your interests, but it’s been so loosely defined in legal requirements that literally any advertiser could pull your personal data through that category and use it however they want. This legal loophole is how websites continue to collect data and build profiles on you without violating the law. And clicking “Reject All” won’t disable anything in that category.
As much as it sucks, you still need to review all categories and manually change your advertising settings, then click “save preferences” (or however it’s specifically worded) instead of just clicking “Reject All.”
Shout out to that time I manually unchecked 100+ legitimate interests only to then hit “Accept All” instead of save 💀
Working as intended.
Advertiser’s love this one trick, i am surprised no one has yet created some JS to swap the buttons around
on_click
Or just skip it entirely, I use the Consent-O-Matic extension which has a surprising amount of features.
Making the internet usable again. Without this and ublock, I might quit the whole thing.
Gotta love dark patterns. Or when you’re about to click reject all, but then a page element conveniently loads in and makes you click accept.

Avoid Obysee if you aren’t into Holocaust denial or hate speech
