Yes, there’s more to it than that and it’s quite stupid and also quite bigoted. Republicans don’t need to know that. They didn’t and won’t read his book anyway.
Without fail, another anti-LGBT Republican with stories about “sexual confusion” and “the temptation of same-sex relations” that all but confirm that they are queer and closeted.
A coworker of mine once tried to pick my brain on gay marriage say something to the effect of “people like you and I wouldn’t be resisting the urge if we didn’t know it was wrong”. I had to pop his bubble by explaining to him that I had never felt the temptation to be gay ever in my life because I am straight, but if I really wanted dick I’d seek it out because sex is fun and I’ll have it with anyone if think it will be mutually enjoyable.
He literally couldn’t wrap his brain around the idea that I was completely willing to have sex with any person that struck my fancy, but that men were never even a consideration. He was experiencing the exact opposite.
Needless to say, he’s still deeply closeted, but he doesn’t bring up gay marriage stuff anymore to me because I think I gave him an ongoing existential crisis. I hope he figures it out eventually…
But statistically, once you’re so deep in the closet that you’ve convinced yourself that everyone wants gay sex, and only “sinners” give into that urge, you’re probably not in the path to figuring anything out. Unfortunately, these people always vote for Fascism, constructing the prison that they themselves will be locked in.
It makes me wonder if a “straight people don’t have to fight gay urges” PR campaign might neuter a lot of this anti-gay angle. Turn these “inspirational” lies into admissions and use their hate against them.
Can we convince him again so he’ll target himself?
Spoiler: He‘s gay.
Not that there is anything wrong with that.
Unless he’s a fascist republiQan.
That’s the part that’s wrong, not the gay part.
Um,that Q was for QAnon, not Queer, right? Or are you trying to say being queer somehow makes a fascist republican even worse?
Hahaha - no, its for Qanon.
Words is funny sometimes.
Let’s not jump to conclusions… he could be Bi.
He just wasn’t repressing hard enough.
What part of the boot does one pull on to increase repression?
That’s when you lick the boot.
My first thought too.

It’ll be game over for him if he starts to vogue while on stage with Trump.
Grindr has a chance to do something very, very funny
Oh yeah, he’s gay. Should just man up about it though but he’s from the mad at rainbows party.
Eh?? The unenlightened bigots are still going on about how being gay is a choice? That somehow choosing to be miserable and conform to a heteronormative would make the gay go away?! Only to later either break free of the brainwashing which led to conforming to an obvious lie of being straight or simply taking a one way trip out of this world. Stupid, fascist Republicans don’t have much to offer but ruin and one big white world, drained of all its color. Hopefully, this November, we trounce these entitled fascists.
In my own personal experience as a child, I simply knew that I was different. I didn’t realize until the hormones activated how different I was! Then again, I was able to reflect on that with something called ‘reading about the experiences of others and trying to find points in common’. JD Vance likely had nothing but bigoted talking points screamed into his ears and he gave in.
My problem with the core of the argument is that it wouldn’t matter if it were a choice or not. I honestly can’t find men attractive as a straight man so if someone else tells me homosexuality is a choice, I just assume they’re actively making that choice one way or another.
I’m a pretty good looking guy, and not being afraid of gay people, with plenty of exposure, I’ve had a few come on to me. I’ve even had one tell me he knows I’m straight and that the only thing he wants is to suck my dick and he would make it fantastic. I figure that with having the hardware and practice, they probably know a good deal about physically pleasing a man, so I’ve seriously considered it.
But like you, I can’t get over the fact that I am just not attracted to men. Even when very drunk. Literally struck out with multiple women rather than taking a sure blowjob.
If anyone would have made that choice, being a horny and open man desperate for a blowjob with opportunity, I’d be a prime candidate. And I couldn’t even choose to be bi.
i still don’t get why any argument on either side is revolving around whether it’s a choice or not. like, ok, discriminating based on immutable qualities is obviously bad and that’s why people are making that point but the end result is this here: people just deny it’s immutable.
the actual argument in my opinion is even if it were a choice so fucking what? just because something is a choice doesn’t make it suddenly ok to take rights away from people who have that choice. otherwise i would have some fantastic ideas about what should be done with republicans; it is a choice to be republican after all.
Because the conservative logic is to punish for being different. They need to assign personal responsibility for someone else having sex and you being born the way you are
Yeah, at the end of the day, I strongly feel being certain things is simply an immutable part of being a person. Nobody chooses to be straight, gay, bi, pan, or anything else related to attraction. There is a choice to ignore or act upon those feelings, often people are put in terrible situations as a result.
I do agree with your argument though, as human rights so remain intact regardless of choice or no choice! We all live in a world we can’t yet escape and need some semblance of social contract to survive. I have a lot of fun ideas for what to do with Republicans as well; as it is a choice they’ve made to be bigoted, shortsighted fascists. Compulsory Drag Show attendance, they’re invited to a Library bit; they are going to get read to filth and hate every moment of self-awareness which will be inflicted upon them. Silly, but that’s the tip of the iceberg!
Which is totally fine right? Unless he belongs to some sort of extremist group that base their identity around intolerance, racism and homophobia… but that’s just crazy talk! This guy could be the new VP!
No it’s not fine because he is insinuating that it is a choice that can be logic’d into/out of
I mean, for some people, it is. When you’re exploring your identity, you don’t always get it right on your first try. Just like there are people who are convinced they’re straight that are actually gay (or bi, or pan, or what have you). Though that is far more common, largely because of the societal pressures to conform to heteronormativity.
But then, perhaps that truly is Vance’s case here. Maybe he actually is gay, and his whole… everything is just him trying desperately to convince himself otherwise.
Being gay is not a choice.
I’m aware of this, but again, people don’t always figure themselves out the first time. We are messy beasts.
Right, but the reason he’s saying this at all is to try and make the claim that it is a choice, and that he simply changed his choice. Not that he found his real self without societal pressure.
OK but that is not the same thing as making a choice to be gay. That is the entire point. What he said insinuates that it is a choice.
I guess what I’m saying is that I don’t doubt the facts of the story, even if I doubt the conclusion he reached.
So I get it, but that adds further fuel to my idea that Trump is using him to throw him under the bus.
Ooohhh, we’re gonna get a closeted vice president!
I think he’s probably trolling in some way? Or maybe this is exactly what some conservatives want to hear, so that’s why he’s saying it. He seems to have learned exactly what to say to make people like him.
It was part of his memoir written at the age of 22. He was trying to sound cool and clever and add color to his grandmother’s character because she asked a 6 year old if he wanted to suck dicks. I wouldn’t think too hard about it.
This is the same guy who hopes everyone has forgotten that he called Trump “America’s Hitler,” so he could just be extremely stupid.
I don’t think he’s stupid. Some people who grow up poor develop a talent for knowing how to ingratiate themselves to others. His changing opinion simply means that the target he wants to charm has changed.
I don’t think he’s stupid…
More to this he graduated undergrad summa cum laude and got his law degree from Yale. I think this dude is actually smart and that concerns me.
This explains so much about why he hates the gays and believes in “Traditional Family” (a word which here means, female slavery to a man)
