Come with the great migration.
My current activities : -Finding caring doctors for an woman -Counsel men at my work about mental health abx/or unionization -Help two refugees friends for their paperwork for citizenship.
I wish I could do more, but on top of work, I’m already exhausted.
Well, I can try to clarify here. Some prison abolitionist, activist or scholars, do indeed think there will be a residual proportion on crime that will necessitate kind of spatial segregationi, and, for some, being locked up for a time.
And it’s not necessarily conflicting with the abolitionist motto. They say : Well, prisons are buildings, but mostly, they are a social and historical function (punishing the poor, the political opposition, etc.). If we abolish that and there are like 3000 people in prison nationwide, the logic of stockpiling inmates will be gone. Maybe it will be possible to actually do something for them. The gap in punishment between the poor and the rich will be reduced if not gone.
Nevermind the building. If their historical function is gone, prisons are gone.
That’s always my first answer indeed. "Well, I’m going to answer your question but first, just think about the abolition of legal slavery a while ago. What would you have thought about someone who would object : “yeah, but what will we replace slavery with ?”.
Well, that would reduce unemployment.
Thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed answer. I agree with you about almost everything.
Tbh, Lemmy leaning strongly to the left is a big plus for me. I mean, it’s easy to find right leaning or centrist communities everywhere. A clearly left leaning space is a gem I’m happy to help preserve and nurture. I’m saying that without offense in mind. But I feel the majority of social networks / boards / microblogging sites lean farther to the right than Lemmy.
And both of them indeed!
I just love it here. But I also know that while most communities are really nice, we rely a lot on two (2) individuals who provide a sizeable part of Lemmy’s content (Picard and PugJesus). We should all try to do our part!
I come from bizarre family, with an upper class father and a mother who grew up in extreme poverty, experienced wealth and now lives in poverty again after divorce.
Although most of my friends are lower middle class, two of my closest friends are homeless asylum seekers and two are doctors, one of which is a neurosurgeon. Some others are unemployed or upper middle class. One of my closest friends is so wealthy I can’t even fathom it.
I don’t have dozens of friends, as my writing could imply. We’re talking 15 persons tops. So there’s indeed a little diversity in there.
And frankly? It’s exhausting and often infuriating. Switching is complicated. But hey, I won’t complain. At least I have close ones. I know some people want for friendship (e.g. my gf).
Yes. It could help somehow, in the ways you described, but I wouldn’t recommend it (at least how it’s taught in the West) at all for someone who wants to learn how to actual fight, or needs some explosive action from martial practice.
I’ll definitely check this, thank you very much fellow lemming!
That’s the thing. That person may also truly be one of the best practitioners of the discipline. I’ve hypothesized maybe there’s two sides to his activity : private teaching and public… shows?
Yes, phisical meditation is nice way to put it (plus agility training on the side, which is never a bad thing!)
We will start practicing push hands this year! We’ve just learned the moves individually. It’ll be interesting to practice then. Thank you!
I am and I’m super glad to have read your message! Thanks for sharing!
But this, I can’t explain : https://youtu.be/4yv34VZGeqs. Do people really believe in this? Can suggestion be that impressively strong?
That guy is my teacher’s master and he deeply respects him as an incredible martial artist. And my teacher and several students seem to follow a 0 bs policy.
But… how can not one question this… kinda grotesque scene?
The human mind impresses me everyday.
There sure is a lot of flashy myths and fantasies in this branch of martial arts. Sometimes, my fellow practitioners truly believe in Chi as a mystical force allowing one to get superhuman abilities, which is a bit frightening tbh. I’m not counting daoism among said fantasies and myth. I’m still ignorant about its meaning. So yes, I guess you’re right.
Oh I certainly am! But after trying to read a few studies about inner arts measurable effect, I’m left with more questions than answer, so I wanted to ask Lemmy’s collective knowledge and impressions.
Ooh. Thank you very much kind stranger.
Some example would include helping strangers in multiple way, try to manage conflicts graciously, house homeless people, prep food for my roommates everyday, try my best to forgive people when they’re rude, standing for a bullied colleague, bring pastries to colleagues, drive give money to as many homeless people as I can, intervene in street fights to separate people, etc.
Thanks for your answer!
