  • It depends on what you’re after from a server.

There’s region specific ones, like the server I’m on just now (feddit.uk) being UK themed. That means when I look at my “Local” feed it’s generally filled with content specific to the UK. There’s others for Canada, Netherlands, Denmark, etc, probably US states as well I would assume.

Or maybe you’re after a server with a political ideology. Lemmy.ml is for Marxist-Leninists, dbzer0 and slrpnk.net are for anarchists, and there’s even a MAGA themed server but I forget its name just now and don’t care to go searching.

There’s also servers that aim to be just a general purpose, jack of all trades master of none kind of place. Your server, Lemmy.world probably being the biggest of those. It has a bit of everything and doesn’t really specialise in one particular topic. Probably the closest to a clone of Reddit.

There’s also servers that are supposed to be safe spaces for particular groups of people. For example, blahaj.zone is for LGBTQ+ people (or those just fans of cuddly shark toys).

As markz said, have a browse of this site to see all the servers and see which fits best with what you want from a link aggregator site. There’s nothing stopping you having accounts on different servers for different purposes either. They all have different rules, content, and block lists so the experience on each is unique.

Good luck exploring, welcome to the Fediverse, and have fun!

  • As UnderPantsWeevil and phutatorius are being unhelpful arseholes. Here’s what I found.

Firstly, the 40% stat is American so not relevant to this conversation. But as with all internet discussion, there is some condescending arsehole American that thinks everything revolves around their country.

Secondly, there is still a serious domestic abuse problem within UK policing.

The charity The Centre For Women’s Justice submitted a “super-complaint” in 2020 on behalf of 200 domestic abuse victims. 45% of which were police officers or police staff themselves.

    https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/police-perpetrated-domestic-abuse-victims-b2614374.html

The Independent Office for Police Conduct has since done an investigation and review which was published in 2022. Available here:

    https://www.policeconduct.gov.uk/publications/police-perpetrated-domestic-abuse-handling-review

I also found this article by the BBC from 2021 which states more than 800 allegations of domestic abuse have been brought against police officers and staff, with only 43 (about 5%) leading to prosecution.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-57432300

The bottom line is ACAB but made up or irrelevant stats don’t help the conversation or change minds. The police are the violence department of the government, the fact many of their officers perpetrate violence isn’t really shocking. What is shocking is how much of the general public support the police despite violence and corruption being their raison d’etre. The government need to get a hold of their dogs and stamp out domestic abuse, but the general public need to get a hold on their perspective of government authority and demand better. Demand a form of crime prevention that doesn’t rely on heavies kicking in doors, hitting people with batons, and being bullies with badges.

This is where I get boring. Much of crime prevention relies on decent living standards and happy communities. People need to realise being “tough on crime” is bullshit peddled by the likes of Tories and Reform who are as criminal and corrupt as they come. To increase happiness and living standards and therefore reduce crime, and therefore reduce domestic abuse, we need to vote for those who would increase living standards for all. We need to vote for those who take a scientific sociological approach as opposed to the “hit them with a big stick approach” which took all of about 5 seconds of thinking to come to.

If you are outraged by the story above and if you are outraged by the prevalence of domestic abuse within policing, then do something about it. Vote for science and reason within government authority. To abolish the police is a very radical position that is unlikely to gain popular support but severely neutering them whilst simultaneously pumping funding into social support, healthcare, and public services can garner public support whilst also providing results. Convince friends and family of these things. Would you rather your taxes go on a social worker who is trying to improve the lives of the downtrodden within their community or a police officer who acts like a hard man all day and then goes home and beats up their wife?

  • Also known as a coward.

Time, aging, and death come for us all. We must make peace with that knowledge. This man is incapable of living life, through fear of losing his life.

I’m gonna go play in some dirt now, and eat raspberries straight from the bush. I know which of us will be enjoying our time on this planet more.

    1. Fascist societies rhetorically cast their enemies as “at the same time too strong and too weak.” On the one hand, fascists play up the power of certain disfavored elites to encourage in their followers a sense of grievance and humiliation. On the other hand, fascist leaders point to the decadence of those elites as proof of their ultimate feebleness in the face of an overwhelming popular will.

“Ur-Fascism” or “Eternal Fascism: Fourteen Ways of Looking at a Blackshirt” (in Italian: Il fascismo eterno, or Ur-Fascismo) is an essay authored by the Italian philosopher, novelist, and semiotician Umberto Eco. First published in 1995, this influential essay provides an analysis of fascism, a definition of fascism, and discusses the fundamental characteristics and traits of fascism.

    Everybody pisses.

But if you’re pissing every 30 mins there’s a problem, likely diabetes.

Many of the ADHD memes are the same concept. Things “neurotypical” may experience but not necessarily experience all day every day, whereas an ADHD person will.

  • Freedom of Speech depicts a scene of a 1942 Arlington town meeting in which Jim Edgerton, the lone dissenter to the town selectmen’s announced plans to build a new school, as the old one had burned down,[9] was accorded the floor as a matter of protocol.[10] Edgerton supported the rebuilding process but was concerned about the tax burden of the proposal, as his family farm had been ravaged by disease.[11] A memory of this scene struck Rockwell as an excellent fit for illustrating “freedom of speech”, and inspired him to use his Vermont neighbors as models for the entire Four Freedoms series.[12]

  • No one wants to leave because nobody is leaving.

You’re still on WhatsApp and Messenger, they can still contact you that way, so why would they bother changing?

Pick a date, a week, a month, whatever, from now. Tell those you message regularly that you will be deleting all Meta apps on that date. Make it clear that that includes WhatsApp and Messenger. Explain why. I just linked some articles instead of having a long explanation but it still made it clear why.

Let them know they can contact you via Signal/SMS/email whatever you use after that date.

If the informed don’t take the leap, the ignorant never will.

And even in the magic utopian ones people dream up, untethered by reality or human nature, I’m trying to picture a version in which the garbage truck guy somehow doesn’t prefer to taking a year off instead of hauling garbage around.

It sounds like you have an individualist approach to society and a view that money is the only true incentive to work (known as Taylorism and generally debunked by the 1930s but still in use around the world). There are always people who can see the work that needs done and are willing to do it, for the good of their community. In a society without garbage trucks, garbage will soon pile up and there will be people willing to fix that.

Hedonism, greed, and money are the values pushed upon society via capitalist propaganda but most people aren’t as inherently greedy as we’re pushed to be.

The good of the community and society can motivate a worker under a system that doesn’t treat money as its deity (or, to be even more radical, in a moneyless society). There’s also no reason why someone must be a garbage truck driver day in day out for the rest of their life like the current system encourages. We can live in a world with a more flexible approach to work, where perhaps you drive a garbage truck once a fortnight to do your bit for your community but spend the rest of your time doing something with a similar skillset like driving a bus or even something completely different to live a full and interesting life.

Your comments come across as arrogant whilst simultaneously ignorant. There are many different systems that have been theorised, trialled, quashed, debated, etc over the years that have various pros and cons that are better than the capitalist system that we currently wage slave under.
