The popularity of iPhones in US doesn’t represent the rest of the world. iPhone users are the minority in Finland. No one is complaining about green chat bubbles because iPhone users have to use WhatsApp aswell.
Thorny_Thicket@sopuli.xyzto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's some really unpopular opinion you have?0·2 years agoWouldn’t be surprised if the (mostly) political right that seems all these new pronouns as stupid would also ironically be against giving up on their own gender specific pronoun for a gender neutral one.
Thorny_Thicket@sopuli.xyzto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's some really unpopular opinion you have?4·2 years agoWe don’t need more pronouns. We need less of them.
In my native language there is no even he/she pronouns. The word is “hän” and it’s gender neutral. You can be male, female, FTM, MTF, non-binary or what ever and you’re still called “hän”. You can identify as anything you like and “hän” already includes you.

I see zero nuance in the discussion about them. This person bad and that’s it.

I’m gladly paying taxes as long as it’s not all going to the pockets of corrupt politicans.

At best he has just been questioning its severity of it. Even in this talk in question he says: “I’m not saying that it’s not happening. It may be happening. I’m happy to say that it may be happening. I may even be happy to say that it’s probably happening”
Thorny_Thicket@sopuli.xyzto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What was the strangest take you've seen/heard someone say?0·2 years agoAre we watching the same video? At what point is he implying that?
Thorny_Thicket@sopuli.xyzto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What was the strangest take you've seen/heard someone say?0·2 years agoI’m having some trouble understanding what exactly is the confusion here. If the sea level rises it’s not like people will just keep living underwater. They have to move somewhere else. Entire cities and towns has to be relocated elsewhere. Besides building massive sea walls there’s just no other option. This in no way implies it’s not going to absolutely suck for the people living there. Ofcourse it does.
What exactly is it that Ben is wrong about here? This is really confusing to me
Thorny_Thicket@sopuli.xyzto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What was the strangest take you've seen/heard someone say?0·2 years agoWhat exactly is bullocks about it?
The sea level doesn’t just rise one day. It’s a slow process that’ll happen over decades. Many of the people living in those houses now probably want to sell in the near future while they still can. They might not get back what they paid but in 5 years you’re not going to get even that so better cut your losses. At some point the coastline gets so close that those houses will just be abandoned, demolished and people will have moved further inland.
Thorny_Thicket@sopuli.xyzto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What was the strangest take you've seen/heard someone say?0·2 years agoYeah I agree. Simulation or not - I wouldn’t expect anything to be different. Life is just as precious even if this is not the base reality because for us it effectively is.
Thorny_Thicket@sopuli.xyzto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What was the strangest take you've seen/heard someone say?0·2 years agoWe may not be the only intelligent life in the entire universe but the only ones in our corner of it and that’s why there is no signs of alien civilizations anywhere to be seen. I’ve also heard people much smarter than me give mathematical explanations as to why the evolution of intelligent life is way more unpropable than most people think.
Why I believe in simulation theory is just statistics; eventually we will develop technology that is able to run such simulations and we’re going to create thousands of them. From that point on when new consciouss being is born it’s unlikely it appears in our world instead of the thousands of simulations we’re running. I just think this applies to us aswell. For us to be living in the base reality we’d either have to be extremely lucky or be the first ones to create such simulations.

Thorny_Thicket@sopuli.xyzto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What was the strangest take you've seen/heard someone say?0·2 years agoIn my circles I’m the one with the strage takes. For example I don’t believe in free will. I believe we’re probably living in a simulation and if we ever create AGI it’s most likely going to end us. Also we’re probably the only intelligent life in the universe.

Thorny_Thicket@sopuli.xyzto Fediverse@lemmy.world•Why Defederating from Facebook/Meta is So Important0·2 years agoThey can do that on Facebook because it’s their code and their platform. They can probably do that on their app and and instance too to some extent but I don’t think they can grab much more than the content of your messages and your likes if you’re on a different instance. Lemmy is open source; if there was a way to get that data we’d know about it.
Thorny_Thicket@sopuli.xyzto Fediverse@lemmy.world•Why Defederating from Facebook/Meta is So Important0·2 years agoEven if we defederate with them they can still grab all the content here. Defederation just stops the flow of content from their instance to ours. Defederation just hides the comments from Threads’ users on our discussions.
I think the real test is when they start demanding that other instances start moderating their content to comply with Facebook’s terms of service and if not then defederate and make them unable to communicate with the by-far biggest instance on the fediverse with almost all the users.
If you throw cigarette butts on the ground you’re probably shittier than average person in many other ways too
I don’t get why this is an issue. Assuming they purchased a legal copy that it was trained on then what’s the problem? Like really. What does it matter that it knows a certain book from cover to cover or is able to imitate art styles etc. That’s exactly what people do too. We’re just not quite as good at it.
