  • Thank you, I’ll give it a look.

Unfortunately change is difficult. If it was just me and my controls team we would probably do something like that, but my boss is a little older and I had hard enough time getting him to work on the cloud as it is, and he works in 2 cities, so he isn’t always in reach to help him. If it doesn’t behave exactly like windows folders, it might be a lost case.

The other people in the office I could train easier. It’s a small office with less than a dozen people on the system at any one time. I am “head of IT” but that isn’t my main job. Having something that installs and sets up quickly is a boon. Not that the sharepoint folders update all that quickly, it takes almost a full day for all the files to show up properly, especially if it is a new user. And if onedrive chokes on any one file it completely stops updating file changes until you fix that. Not a problem for anybody with some savvy, but half the people don’t even notice until their files have diverged and somebody calls them and asks why they don’t see some change or another.

All that being said, if I can save a few hundred dollars a month I could probably eventually talk them into moving over to something cheaper like I did with the Wondershare PDF editor. That was an easy move because it works exactly like Adobe but doesn’t crash on large files nearly as often. It is sort of a shame that Adobe is worse at handling their own file format than nearly any other PDF editor.

  • It seems like they are doing this to push back on mono-culture. Probably just to save money really. Using 365 saved our small office a lot of time, but it is pretty expensive since it is a constant subscription. I already switched away from Adobe at to Wondershare for PDF editing since we can get a single purchase from Wondershare and have to pay a subscription to Adobe. I would be tempted to do the same thing with 365 but we do a lot of traveling and the integrated sharepoint files is pretty useful.

  • It means what it means, “freely” pulls its own weight. I didn’t say “readily” accessible. Torrents could be viewed as “readily” accessible but it couldn’t be viewed as “freely” accessible because at the very least you bear the guilt of theft. Library books are “freely” accessible, and if somehow the training involved checking out books and returning them digitally, it should be fine. If it is free to read into neurons it is free to read into neural systems. If payment for reading is expected then it isn’t free.

  • Well, I do wish they would promote the actual use and limitations of AI and stop making up crap and overselling the use cases. I use ChatGPT at work all the time as a start for research, but if I took any of it as being reliable info to run with I would be in grave trouble. It is a great tool that has saved me much time because I know how far to trust it and how to use it. The progress is very impressive as I’ve been using AI art services for years, and the difference between the random blobs from back then and the great stuff it can generate now is pretty stark. Same thing with the LLMs. I’ve been using ChatGPT since it showed up and it has improved greatly since then. Before all this I talked to people who were using AI training on various picture recognition projects where getting data from other sensors was not practical. … Overall AI is pretty exciting, but the non-stop hype and hate headlines is doing nobody any favors.

  • That is definitely his plan. Why else would he be so loud and purposefully using language designed to make people furious? I don’t think the tariffs are his end game, but he is keeping something hidden behind all these theatrics. He is (probably) not going to run again, so what else could he be up to working everybody up like this? Could be that he is desperately hoping to slip away without going to prison for all his other crap.

  • I don’t know what is in Trump’s head. His handlers, at least, if not Trump himself, probably expected the raise in price. The whole price staying same thing is just a story to tell the people who would be paying that higher price and be mad about it. Either Trump knows this or his handlers know this. It isn’t a miscalculation on their part, it is just how tariffs are supposed to move the market. I don’t think Trump gets the tariff money, though he can put it on paper somewhere where it looks good for him. Really, whether or not tariffs raise the price of goods is a nonissue that just gets the news buzzing. The issue that should be on top is whether the approach is going to work at all. I can’t find a source that can step back and analyze it. Either they are pro Trump and will lie to make it sound good, or they are anti Trump and they will over-blow it to try to cause as much fear as possible, whether it is actually doing the real job of alleviating the trade deficit or not.

The outrage is misplaced, it should be laser focused on the administration outsourcing prisons for immigrants, and maybe citizens. Making everything into an emergency is turning all this reporting into white noise, obscuring the real issues.

  • Really, there is only two good reasons to make tariffs. One is to increase the price of goods coming from outside of the country vs the price of goods made in the country. Americans paying more is a feature. This, of course, makes us mad when we pay for those more expensive things and makes us more likely to buy the things made in America. This anger isn’t politically expedient, so the Trumper lies to make it seem like there will be no change and that gets to be the big news item.

The second reason for tariffs is to make American goods cheaper in other countries. Ideally If he sets the tariffs to automatically match the tariffs other countries have on imports of American goods, those countries will adjust their tariffs down to make their goods sell better in America. Then, supposing that happens, American goods would be more competitive in those markets.

In theory all that is pretty fair… especially if the tariffs are exactly matching the other country’s tariffs.

Arbitrary or punitive tariffs are counter-productive to both of those items.

Unfortunately, it seems like this basic theory is as far as anybody is planning. Also, Trump is loud and obnoxious about everything that is done.

The biggest obvious problem is that the US doesn’t have the manufacturing capabilities anymore, so disrupting the trade hurts American companies designed around getting their manufacturing done outside of the country.

People’s wages and living expenses are planned around cheap imports, this puts a strain on the lowest paid people in our country.

Really, if the tariffs ‘work out’ then it is a good thing, but they definitely seem to be ham-fisting it.

  • We are all controlled. We can’t kill inconvenient people. Sometimes it feels like killing others is the only way to gain control, to you, I guess. It is a little easier to abandon children when they aren’t relying on our body to survive. When that is the case, abandoning them kills them. After that, somebody else can keep them alive until they are old enough to pay taxes. There was a time for choice… for most people. That time was before a third+ person was involved. Sometimes killing a rapists children can be therapeutic maybe. That is a particularly sad situation. Sometimes a child cannot survive, and must be killed lest they kill the mother. Things like that happen. That place wasn’t restraining themselves to those edge situations. Sometimes people were cutting up babies just for being inconvenient. You need not worry. I don’t vote for Republicans. You don’t need to overcompensate to get extra points for your partisan games…

  • I believe human life to be valuable. I don’t believe in an immortal soul. I believe a baby is its own person once the DNA combines in its own pattern. I believe a lot of work has gone into dehumanizing those people. I can’t even feel mad at these people mocking me, well, not really mad. I know they think they are doing what is right. Protecting women. Imagine watching people feed their babies into a grinder and not even being able to convince them that it isn’t a great thing to do. Very distressing. I usually hold my tongue, because what good is arguing with them. I even deleted my comments , because… What’s the point? But eh… maybe I’m too easy to rile.
