News@lemmy.world•After cost-cutting blitz, Trump administration rehires hundreds of laid-off employeesEnglish
0·1 month agoWhat a shit article. The courts ruled that the hundreds of employees that were placed on admin leave pending termination for working there less than a year were fired illegally. They cannot fire them. Since they are still on admin leave they have to come back.
What they failed to mention is that all of the employees who were put on admin leave pending termination, who then took the “fork” offer do not get to come back because they “quit.”
The GSA was and is DOGE central and is completely broken right now.

Technology@lemmy.world•The right to anonymity is powerful, and America is destroying itEnglish
0·1 month agoAge verification is ID verification. By requiring ID site owners effectively have a monopoly on the bot armies infesting reddit, YouTube, Facebook, etc. These armies aren’t going away. They are just getting smarter and more influential with AI.
Everyone is focusing on the privacy aspect and glossing over the fact that these laws give Silicon Valley complete control over online discourse. They’ll know who exactly who you are and how best to manipulate you with their bots.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why exactly does AI-generated comic/cartoon/2D art look so off-putting?English
0·2 months agoFor me at least it’s that the perspective is off. When someone is learning to draw or is just a shitty artist and the perspective isn’t very good you can immediately identify it. It looks like someone drew “front” eyes on the side of the head or something like that. When AI makes an image, the perspective is off, just in a different ways. The eye doesn’t look like a “front” eye or a “side” eye or a “top” eye. It looks like all of them and none of them. It makes the entire thing unsettling.

News@lemmy.world•CDC director refuses to leave after White House orderEnglish
0·2 months agoTrump may throw a shit fit because some stole his power by firing her. He’s a petty petty man and may just keep her because of that.
Imagine if the AI bots learn to target and prioritize content not generated by AI (if they aren’t already). Labeling your content as organic makes it so much more appetizing for bots.

News@lemmy.world•Reddit’s 50% plunge fails to entice dip buyers as growth slowsEnglish
0·7 months agoTalk about failing to pivot. Reddit was in such a good position to ride the AI bubble. Too bad all of their content had already been scraped. They then alienated their power users and casual users got a peak behind the curtain. New, interesting things don’t start on Reddit anymore. The entire front page is just trump articles and reposts. You can predict all of the top comments because it is the same shit over and over.

News@lemmy.world•US 'click to cancel' rule to tackle subscription trapsEnglish
0·1 year agoSo, I have significant hearing loss. Phone calls remove most of the lower sound frequencies that I’m able to hear well. Trying to talk to an Indian woman speaking quickly on the phone is nearly impossible. I am so happy for this change. Requiring phone calls for service is an accessibility issue.

Technology@lemmy.world•Why is Facebook filled with so much random junk now?English
0·1 year agoAs much as everyone loves to shit on Facebook, it was an incredible service. When I was in the military I was able to keep up with my old friends and their lives. When I got out I was able to simply keep in touch with my old military buddies. Now it’s just dead. I’m genuinely sad that this has happened :(

0·1 year agoI’m in Oregon and every other ad on Pluto is about how great Kroger is to their employees. I feel like the average person doesn’t realize how disastrous the merger will be for everyday people. Food is already becoming unaffordable. They are merging to lower prices.

0·1 year agoWhenever I hear about a shitty judge, DA, or cop that’s where my mind jumps immediately. Once one of these people have their judgment or integrity called into question, every case they had any involvement in should also be questioned.

News@lemmy.world•US Crime Rate Drops to ‘Historic’ Lows With Murders, Rapes, and Robbery Plunging, New Statistics ShowEnglish
0·1 year agoLiterally, the publisher of the data explicitly states and explains why in the quote.
The drop in reported crime coincides exactly with the George Floyd protests. Saying that because reported crime went down, all crime went down without addressing the cultural shift of the relationship between the public and the police is dishonest.
I never made any kind of argument. I just pointed out that the FBI cautions the public from drawing broad conclusions to people who are drawing broad conclusions.

News@lemmy.world•US Crime Rate Drops to ‘Historic’ Lows With Murders, Rapes, and Robbery Plunging, New Statistics ShowEnglish
0·1 year ago“Data Considerations The data found on the Crime Data Explorer represents reported crime, and is not an exhaustive report of all crime that occurs. It’s important to consider the various factors that lead to crime activity and crime reporting in a community before interpreting the data. Without these considerations the available data can be deceiving. Factors to consider include population size and density, economic conditions, employment rates, prosecutorial, judicial, and correctional policies, administrative and investigative emphases of law enforcement, citizens’ attitudes toward crime and policing, and the effective strength of the police force.”

Technology@lemmy.world•Small modular nuclear reactors get a reality check in new reportEnglish
0·1 year agoI was a nuclear operator in the Navy. Here are the actual reasons:
- The designs are classified US military assets
- They are not refuleable
- They only come in 2 “sizes”: aircraft carrier and submarine
- They are not scaleable. You can just make a reactor 2x as big
- They require as much down time as up time
- They are outdated
- The military won’t let you interrupt their supply chain to make civilian reactors
- New designs over promise and underdeliver
- They are optimized for erratic operations (combat) not steady state (normal power loads)
- They are engineered assuming they have infinite sea water available for everything
There’s more but that’s just off the top of my head

It’s hilarious too that they probably spent millions on him and 9/10 Americans couldn’t tell you who he is
