  • You can construct a trolley problem to justify anything you want. It’s about the constraints that the person who posed the question chose. You don’t really get to choose in a trolley problem. The constraints choose for you. In the real world, our options are not so constrained and the outcomes are not so clear. As such it is useless for actually figuring out what to do.

The trolley problem is a useful basic philosophical experiment to get people to think about things and reflect on constraints, assumptions, and values. And often the best response is in fact “fuck these constraints and assumptions!”

So the trolley problem is not bullshit, but it is very very often misapplied in a bullshit or bad faith way, for example last year in the US I saw a lot of liberals uncritically and unironically appeal to “the trolley problem” to rationalize voting for the party that was committing a live-streamed Holocaust. They were using it to absolve themselves of the responsibility to think about and own their moral judgements, and that is the sort of misuse that a lot of people balk at.

  • Nah she could still get my vote. It’s just that the longer the genocide goes on the higher the price rises. At the start, she could have earned my vote by denouncing Biden and the genocide and demanding an arms embargo to the genocidal ethnostate, then consistently held that position, resigned from the VP position in protest, attempted a citizen’s arrest or Genocide Joe, anything. Instead she’s steadfastly supported genocide. Now at this point, to earn my vote, she’ll have to do all that AND sign legally binding documents promising to invade Israel on day 1 of her presidency to overthrow the genocidal apartheid regime and turn it over to a coalition of all Palestinian resistance groups

  • So all the escalations and violence from NATO that preceded the official start of the war don’t count?

If you do a thing that you know is going to lead to war then you’re starting the war. And NATO knew its brinkmanship with Ukraine was very likely to force Russia’s hand – analysts across the political spectrum were screaming it for years trying to sound the alarm. The mistake they made was assuming NATO would care to avoid war.

NATO led Ukraine into war, has fed Ukrainians into the abattoir of Russian artillery, sabotaged peace talks, and just generally clearly gives 0 fucks about Ukrainian lives.
