Maybe I’m out of the loop here but I don’t know both. For a chat app, I’m mostly satisfied with Signal.

the icon is MetaAI that Meta forcefully put into WhatsApp’s search field and other parts of the app, so now everything you type in the search field while looking for chats or messages is sent to some remote server

I see. Then I’m glad I don’t use whatever the crap Zuckerberg comes with. Though most people I know uses it which sucks.

What is that thing, that should be triggering me? I see it the first time in my life.

For future reference please add some context to post like this.

How do you convince your normy friends to join? Lets say your grandma, etc. Or does delta has some bridge functionality? The point of a chat app is that your contact are also there.

is it that hard? I uninstalled whatsapp long ago, my family and friends use Delta Chat to communicate with me because that is the only way to do so, it is not that hard, if you keep whatsapp installed then for sure people will think it is pointless to install other app if they can just contact you via whatsapp

about context, that whatsapp forced the AI into even the search field of WhatsApp is well known in the fediverse and people are complain about it loudly everywhere, was assuming this was well known news

because IMAP is what is most supported out there, and it doesn’t matter much, most of the features that IMAP would bring you are useless if your inbox is just full of encrypted messages, you can’t do on-server searches etc

and btw, wait for your family to want to migrate their account from one phone to another ex. from Android to iPhone or the other way around, this is easy and smooth in Delta Chat, and it is a pain or plain impossible in most other apps including Signal where I have hear more than one saying they just lost all their chat history in a migration

I managed (entirely through text) to talk my 70 year old mother through transferring her Signal account from one phone to another. It really wasn’t that difficult.

I don’t think so, literally, Signal installation is much complex, first your family need to solve a CAPTCHA, then enter phone number, SMS code etc. in Delta Chat they directly just set an avatar and name and that is it, for getting in contact they just scan each other’s QR or tap in the menu and click “invite friend” then they can send their invitation link in the WhatsApp family group

I think the more important part here is not to do the same mistake again, switching from WhatsApp to Signal is not solving the actual problem, you are switching from one centralized phone-number-based American server to the other and nothing prevents the later to end up in the same situation in a couple of years

this solves the problem of getting away from AI, to a service that has no plans to integrate AI. this is not about centralization/decentralization, it is about AI.

TIL 2fa & captcha are complex. signal install is not that complex, cmon now. they also offers the qr code scan, like delta chat, and the ‘invite friends’ link.

in a decentralized service you know you can always be independent, even if now official delta chat developers decided to put AI into some instance server, that is not the case for Signal

and about the captcha, still the point is that the onboarding is easier with Delta Chat than with Signal, and because it is easy for you don’t assume it is easy for every one to deal with captcha and sms verification, also entering the phone number and depending on one is already a bit annoying, it is possible to do but it is not nice, and for example in families with kids that are not allowed to use SIM cards yet, it is simply not an option at all
