Automattic has added Beeper to their project roster that includes Wordpress, WooCommerce, Penpot and more.
As an open source project based on Matrix, with packages available for Linux… I think this ensures the future for a viable messaging app on our platform of choice.
This will further augment the use of Matrix, which may not be the best protocol for the job as others have commented in the past, but it’s better than proprietary alternatives, and a great starting point.
Although i like wordpress i dont trust Automatic. Its a gut feeling and I dont know why
Afaik they’ve been pretty good stewards of Wordpress and other software they acquired.
I’m not so sure about that… See 👉

Edit : it’s becoming the new dystopian trend now
This is for their hosted solution though. Wordpress.org is not the same as Wordpress.com
Hmm, I didn’t know that… But does it matter ? Because most people won’t be using the self hosted solution… 🤷♂️
I dont know for sure but my guess is that the self hosted wordpress sites are the majority of wordpress sites. Self hosted are also the sites hosted on we servers and VPN etc. Anything not hosted by wordpress really.
All the cloud WordPress instances that are not hosted on WordPress.com, so aws, gcloud, azure, digitalocean and lot’s others I either forgot or mistyped, use the self hosted version that offers you the preloaded WordPress package in their servers. Aws lightsail comes to mind as a very popular and cheap all in one package where you can boot up wordpress.
There was a bit of drama on tumblr (owned by Automattic) not too long ago where a relatively well known trans blogger got banned as a part of an slleged harassment campaign. I recall Matt Mullenwag (Automattic’s CEO) being accused of following the user on to other platforms and harassing them. There were also accusations of, IIRC, tumblr staff taking payments to ban users. Which isn’t great. So if my memory is accurate, your gut feeling is probably right.
