Tell them to fuck off and that they’re illegally using the DMCA on a file where the copyright owners themselves offer BitTorrent as a distribution method.

Just ignore it. The ISP generally doesn’t care, and the claimant still has nothing but your IP until you respond. The ISP can’t legally give out your personal info to the claimant, just pass the notice to you.

And even if they do give the account holder’s information to the requesting law firm, courts have ruled that an IP isn’t a person and if you want to bring suit against a person, the rights holder needs to identify an individual responsible. Lawyers know this and don’t generally take cases like that, too.

This didn’t happen to OP, and it isn’t recent - look at the reporting date.

This happened back in 2021 and apparently blew up on Reddit and Twitter, causing OpSec to release a public statement that claimed that the DMCA notice was a fake.

Please don’t repost unsourced/unverified stuff like this. There’s enough intentional misinformation being produced, we don’t need it to be spread.

Only the copyright holder can do this. Cmon Canonical, tear them a new one.

I’ve got a folder with 100+ of those notices in it.

Never bothered to care. Never had an issue.

The ISP is obligated to pass them to you in the form they received them; but they have no motivation to actually action against it. That just cuts into their profits.

Thought, have switched to usenet, So I haven’t received one in a few years now.
