Hi, sorry if this is the wrong place to post this.
I have been looking for a laptop with a new, TOTL chip under $1000. Till now Framework with their outlet store selling a 13 inch model with the Ryzen 7 7840U is the best I could find. I don’t really mind used laptops but they need to be repairable and upgradeable. I’m looking for TOTL chips from now till the last 2 years (I.E. Intel Core Ultra 9/AMD Ryzen 9 HX).
Any recommendations? I would like to keep it under $1000 for the laptop without memory and storage.
Custom PC builder in a Clevo case or something is my guess. Chomsky but far easier to get better parts in them and since they’re for custom builders, they’re easy to open and upgrade etc.
I thought Clevo only sold to businesses? I’ve thought about Clevo but dismissed them because I assumed it was not realistic to actually buy a laptop from them, so this is news to me. Where can I get an unbranded Clevo laptop?
Depends where you live. Just look up regional PC builders and see if they do laptops. They pretty much all sell Clevo, often unbranded or you can request they don’t brand it.
eBay might be another option. Or a laptop refurbished. I’ve picked up several refurbished Clovos over the years that were ex workstations of some big enterprise.
You’re not getting a “top of the line” laptop for $1000.
In my opinion the Framework laptops are the best you can get at every price point but there’s an argument to be made for Macs if you’re made of money and don’t care about being fucked.
Sorry but I don’t want a MacBook. I’ll run *nix on this laptop for my workloads.
I see. The Framework 13 with Ryzen 9 HX 370 is about $1700 and the Ryzen 7 from the last generation is $900. I think both are priced a bit too expensive for a barebones device, even if they are super repairable. A $100-$200 reduction would be my ideal price for these laptops.
Thanks for the comment.

They are expensive but you have to account for the fact that they’ll theoretically last indefinitely.
I have no idea what “TOTL” is, or a chip that is described as such. Care to enlighten us?
Top of the line
Neither do I…
Unless it’s Tactical in some fashion… 🤷♂️
This might be a bot. Hard to tell.
I’m not a bot and TOTL expands to “top of the line”
There is no “Top Of the Line” anymore. Everything has tradeoffs for their purposes. Maybe let us know what you want it to do.
Framework will be the platform to beat 100% and without question. The Refurb prices are an insane deal.
Thanks for the comment. I need the most CPU horsepower in a laptop that I can repair and find parts easily for under $1000. My projects need a lot of CPU power but I anticipate I’ll be moving around with it (I don’t care about the weight though, I’ll chuck it in a bag so that’s not an issue. Neither is battery life since I won’t be working on the go, just take the laptop to different locations).
