For those of you that haven’t seen, 4chan was hacked:

https://boingboing.net/2025/04/17/4chan-hacked-obliterated-and-unlikely-to-be-back-soon.html

A deadly blow? Will a copycat spring up? Where are the users going in the meantime? Does any of this really matter?

I’ve seen some in the comment sections on Lemmy, but the brunt is probably going to tarnish reddit, as they’ve done it already when they werent on 4chan.

    A deadly blow?

    I hope so.

    Will a copycat spring up?

History says yes, but if a loving god truly exists, one won’t.

Where are the users going in the meantime?

    Hopefully outside.

Does any of this really matter?

Only if they bring their bullshit to the fediverse.

I think Lemmy is easier to manage getting rid of any BS. Even if they do bring BS to Lemmy, they won’t last.

If they do, hopefully they flock to a single instance which is easily blockable

That was what I was going to say. Then, we can isolate them. Or any community that tries to corrupt Lemmy like reddit.

I know it’s a tiny minority of their culture over there but I will miss seeing screenshots of their wholesome/poignant greentexts. I hope some of those robots move on and turn out ok

The 8 Chan guys will complete the takeover. The Nazis will stay.

The people that want to continue participating in imageboard culture will migrate to one of the alternatives/older ones like 2channel or krautchan.

Edit: I miss some of the dead alternatives like 420 or brit

I wonder if 7chan is still kicking. Back in my chan days, which were like 15 years ago now, yikes, I considered myself to be better than the average 4chan pleb because I used seven instead

‘Containment’ doesn’t work. That was the reason /pol/ was created, but all that did was rapidly radicalize the userbase, which then spread back to the other boards.

The sharty and other imageboards. It’s virtually impossible for them to exist on fedi due to moderation, however they will probably create new chan instances, especially since I’ve seen them talk about lemmy before

They won’t join übercorp social media because they already look down upon it + half of them will be banned in less than a week
