As a result, our instance https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/ got 625 new user registrations (of which 536 where accepted) in the past 24 hours! And the registrations are not abating even now. We still get like 10 new ones per hour!
I suspect this is probably the largest advertisement, for lemmy specifically, since the main reddit blackouts 1.5 years ago.
Have your own instances also seen an influx of new users?

For anyone new: consider investing 10 minutes to learn how lemmy works and why decentralized and open source is better than proprietary and centralized platforms like reddit.
https://join-lemmy.org/docs/index.html
Especially important to understand decentralization when it comes to topics like piracy. Unlike Reddit, a non-commercial Lemmy instance isn’t going to be shut down by a CEO who is worried about how it might affect their ability to sell ads. But, admins can get threatened, they can get overwhelmed, they can get hit by a bus. It’s good to know how how to find other communities on other servers, etc.
It’s a bit of a mixed experience. Overall, federation has its benefits, but it also tends to encourage cliquish behavior among groups. Sometimes, entire servers get blacklisted for various reasons. Reddit has a lot of corners that don’t violate its current ToS but are generally ignored by the community at large. These are NSFW spaces usually. In federation the ToS isn’t usually about pleasing the most people and pulling them into your platform, it’s more about the ideals of your server admin team. That’s a good thing, I suppose. It’ll be interesting to see how things play out with Lemmy federations when Reddit bans porn.
It’ll be interesting to see how things play out with Lemmy instances when Reddit bans porn.
Especially as many Lemmy instances don’t want to host or moderate NSFW content. I don’t blame them, but I’m also doubtful pornlemmy alone could handle the load (pun intended).
Having looked at the NSFW Lemmy instance, I 100% expect the Reddit refugees will try to host their own instances. Some of them. I also expect them to be defederated pretty quickly.
That’ll teach em! You can’t just sign up, first you gotta read some 20 minute long post from gnu.org
Are you allergic to reading ?
Nah mate, most of us are autistic Linux home user scientist egg head engineers like you
Are you making fun of autism ?
When it comes to things I don’t want to read during my lunch break, yes.
:motions at trillions of times people that signed up for Fb, Ig, Twit, TkTk, etc/everything without reading the Terms of Service:
A lot of people are.
Nobody is forcing you but you should really consider investing 20 minutes in learning how lemmy is different. You may think it’s not that serious but look at where popular centralized platforms are heading to, now that bad actors are taking full control the problem cannot be ignored
I see your argument and I am playing in the same field, but in reality you will scare average users away with that kind of stuff.
I’m simply suggesting new comers to learn how this place works. If people get scared over how a software works it’s even more evidence that we need to help them understand.
But they don’t want to? What next?
If I had to read a 20 minute post just to doomscroll Elon and Linux, I’d just stick to Reddit. Whatever nefarious stuff they’re doing isn’t more valuable than 20 minutes of my real world time.
Whatever nefarious stuff they’re doing isn’t more valuable than 20 minutes of my real world time.
I’m not sure if you are trolling. 20 minutes is a random number we pick up it probably take even less and 20 minutes is not really much time, we waste more time doing more useless things
Guess I am one of the 536 newbies hahahaha!
Welcome !
Welcome to Lemmy!! We are called Lemmings over here! Or whatever you want really. I may have drank too much beer.
Fwiw, I prefer Fedizen, bc it works for other things too like Mastodon, Mbin, PieFed (where I’m typing this from btw), Friendica, etc.
But yeah, where you are, Lemming works too I suppose.
I like fedizen too, and threadiverse for lemmy, mbin, piefed, etc. (or when accessing the threadiverse through friendica, hubzilla, etc.)
Threadiverse does sound to me too much like Threads… but that’s dead anyway so meh, whatever, Threadiverse it is then! (Especially since iirc our usage of it predated that of Threads anyway)
And Fedizen makes me feel so… responsible? 😎
Now have a beer: 🍻😄
Hello fellow Fedizen!!!
Hello! Now let’s go grab a beer… 🍻
We are called Lemmings over here!
Lemminators
Thank you fellow lemming!
Your username implies the existence of a lesser, regular jimboomba.
Welcome! Happy to have you!
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE LINUX DISTRO
And why is it Arch
pshaw, NixOS, Arch is too easy.
Welcome!
Welcome! If you have any questions about the fediverse or piracy in general, feel free to post or shoot the community some questions in this thread. We’re glad you made the switch!!!
Guess I am one of the 536 newbies hahahaha!
Welcome my friend! Spread the word around. Be part of the resistance!
Yes, trying my best to spread the word!
So, what’s your take on all the Lemmy.ml drama? What do you MEAN you don’t know what I’m talking about??? Is this your first day on Lemmy or something? Oh, it is? Oh.
Ignore me. I’m making bad jokes.
Welcome! How are you liking Lemmy so far?
We’d use Branston beans, but not gonna lie that looks shit hot. Would scran with a bottle of 8% cider.
I thought Heinz was the gold standard in the UK. I must try the Branston ones. Flippin’ love that pickle.
Don’t think I’ve ever seen them in the supermarket in Ireland but my sister’s visiting from the UK on Sunday so I think I’ll place an order.
I find Heinz beans a bit watery. I prefer the supermarket own brands to Heinz… Branston’s are much better and tastier, with a thicker sauce. Still, YMMV and all that jazz.
Oh, I forgot an annoying trivial issue: the Heinz cans don’t stack up well (lock into place with one can on top of another).
That non stacking thing annoys the piss out of me haha. It’s such a small thing and it’s deliberate to make the tin look bigger but it just means they’re taking up more space in the cupboard for lack of stacking or falling over if you do.
Also not a huge Heinz fan. Like they’re not bad don’t get me wrong but definitely agree on the watery-ness.
The most popular one here is probably Bachelor’s which has a thicker, richer sauce though I’m fond enough of the Lidl own brand one. That is definitely partly down to price. They’re ridiculously cheap and very decent with a fry especially if you warm them slowly to soften them.
I’ll have to try Bachelor’s beans the next time I see them, as well as Lidl’s own when I’m near their store.
Now, what’s this thread about? Oh, yeah, pirating beans. That’s it. ;)
There are two Lidl beans. The extra 10p for the ring pull one gets you more than just the convenience. :) Worth trying both though.
Yaaarrrrns.
Check out phtn.app and Voyager for Lemmy (app/PWA).
Welcome! We’ve been waiting for you!
Is there some infographic or image that explains how lemmy works? It may get confusing for new people. Even myself, I have been sort of “out of” lemmy and I don’t remember how tagging or linking instances works anymore. It would be nice to get an image that explains those things to just post around for new users…
Please, don’t take this the wrong way, seriously:
I find that quickstart entirely useless. How to create communities is already pretty self explanatory, as there is a button for “Create Community”. The same goes for Search.
I think an image/infographic with things like “how to link users?”, “how to link communities?”, is much more useful, as there are no quick ways to find that out, i.e., no buttons.
That’s how you link communities. As long as that community is batman@lemmy.world. See how the second time it wasn’t a link? You need the !
Thunder interprets both as communities, probably because a mistyped community is much more likely than a random email address.
On Voyager, one is a mailto link hehe.
Makes sense as the app has no way to know if it’s an email address or not
No worries, you make a good point.
For your question, this post https://lemmy.world/post/8505771 is probably better (from !newtolemmy@lemmy.ca )
The best instance on lemmy grows ever stronger ✊️
Oh man, I am both happy for the instance, and sorry for you lol. I hope you find somebody soon to help with going over all those applications. I don’t envy you, to be honest.
Congrats to all lemming pirates !
…the fingers :o
Yeah… Lemmings are not perfect and ok with other people disabilities (^_-)
One less finger, or one extra finger? 🤔
Good question. I don’t know how many fingers a lemming has neither do I know how many a mouse has. I use a mouse in the prompt as @aihorde@lemmy.dbzer0.com does not know what animal is a lemming.
Was it taken down? I don’t see it. Why was it being promoted in the first place and how was it not immediately banned? I thought reddit banned anything lemmy related.
You don’t see the link I posted?
Nvm. Completely missed the small “www.reddit.com” under the post. Didn’t realise it was clickable. Thanks!
It’s link/instance dependent. Another strength of the fediverse
Unfathomably based.
Couldn’t imagine a piracy community on reddit feeling good about its future.
Reddit will literally change its rules to get rid of communities it doesn’t like. They did it with DarkNetMarkets.
to any new user, or new lurker, welcome!! the begining is kinda shit, but it was as well when you started on instagram/reddit/tiktok, you just dont remember it. i dont remember my upstart into the fediverse because it has been such a short part of my independent-net journey.
I remember my start and immediate end on Bluesky. Got banned for saying the white ones were better. I was discussing Eneloop batteries!
Lol for real?
The main thing I heard about Bluesky is that it costs like $100 mill to run your own instance or something like that, so they only have one main instance for now. They technically have federation, but for all intents and purposes, it’s just another centralized corporate service waiting to be enshittified.
As far as I can tell. It tells me my profile and anything I post is restricted, never see any replies. I guess an AI moderator got upset.
Are the white ones actually better though?
If you need ones that don’t have a high self discharge then yes. The black ones (pro) have a higher capacity but will self discharge in a few months.
Yes surprisingly. I haven’t advertised at all yet, but we had 8 people join.
That’s real cool to hear!
Threadiverse >>
Well, welcome to moron city.
