I just installed Win11 (previously on Win10). I created the bootable USB with Rufus and checked to skip the Microsoft account login requirement (Rufus created a local account for me). Now I discovered I can’t download anything from this store because of this error. Google / Youtube haven’t been very helpful.

It’s saying that it can’t authenticate something. Probably a certificate or encrypted passkey of some type

Will that intertwine my entire PC with the Microsoft account or the login in will be just for the store? I don’t want to be tied to the Microsoft account. I haven’t encountered this error using a local account before.

You should be able to sign in to just the store app by clicking a tiny little box on the subsequent window that pops up during the sign-in process. That’s how I sign in to the store for app downloads without having to use those same credentials to sign in to the PC.

That box is intentionally made small and easy to miss because they obviously want you to use a MS account across the whole machine, but it’s there if you move slowly and look for it.

That said, you shouldn’t have to sign in to download any app updates from the store. You can also download new apps without signing in-- the license will just be tied to the machine instead of your personal account if you do that.

This unhelpful error is just MS being MS. Best option is usually just to leave it be and check back later, as it oftentimes really is a problem on their end.

You’ve bypassed Microsoft’s account requirement using a third party hack, and are now trying to access a Microsoft service that requires an account.
What did you expect to happen?

I love how confidently incorrect you are. There’s no 3rd party hack required to bypass the Microsoft account login/sign up requirement. You just do the initial set up of the computer without connecting it to the internet.

Always had a local account on Win10, never had to login in to download from the store. Friends have local accounts on Win11, no login required. No need to be condescending.

Microsoft is going hard on requiring accounts for windows 11. Its one of the many reasons I am considering switching over to Linux entirely.

I know I’m not the one you asked but I’ll answer since I put on Win11 after first trying out Ubuntu from Win10. Apps were a dealbreaker for me. I pay for Apple Music and Tidal for lossless music, neither have a proper Linux app (Apple Music has Cider but it doesn’t support lossless and Tidal has a DIY client but it only supports music up to HiFi quality not Master). Plus there were many random bugs such as the snap store refusing to update as it was “running at the same time” and I tried to install Deluge from the app store, it installed but there was no client actually showing up.

Not OP, but mostly inertia. I have a workflow. I have the programs I need to do what I want. Most of it is stuff I’ve had in place for years. Can I do those things on Linux? Probably, but I’d have to look into it.

That being said, my laptop doesn’t officially support Windows 11, so the Windows 10 EoL in October will probably be the “external force” I need to format my drive and switch. Well done, Microsoft.

It’s a Microsoft error. Nobody will ever know. Ask your system administrator for more info.

I mean, What are you trying to download and can you get it from other channels? MS store has been rather hit or miss for me, and you can typically find it elsewhere…and if you can’t find it elsewhere, there are still ways to get it from the store without using the store
