I have drove in 49 out of 50 states (never been to Hawaii) and Illinois ranks the worst in my opinion. It’s like they ran out of asphalt and stopped doing any repairs 10 or 20 years ago.
To people not living in the U.S., feel free to complain about your country’s roads too.
You’re not missing much by not going to Hawaii for the roads, the two mainmost islands are jointly owned by billionaires and everyone lives on the third largest island which is tiny and influenced by the tropical setting anyways.
That said, New York takes the cake. Twists and turns galore in upstate, drivers’ hell in downstate. GPS does not help anyone there. And then there are the extreme Winters. It’s so bad that Buffalo Bills attendees will often help each other get to the football games.
