I’m glad you’ve just now moved over to Linux. A lot of us have been using it professionally for 15+ years. I would like news and references here to be about THOSE things. Not how you spent the weekend realizing how Windows desktop is the same as another thing, and then declaring how your porn works the same on Linux as it does on Windows.

If you want to announce your disapproval or approval of a certain post, there’s this great mechanism built right in to do so. There are a couple of little arrow buttons; just click the down arrow on anything that you don’t enjoy.

Personally I find it dead easy just to not click on any posts that don’t pique my interest, and it’s not like this community has so much content that “high quality” posts are getting buried under the sheer volume.

If you want to start a new community which is just Linux news aggregation, you go right ahead though.

Switching over to a new operating system can be challenging, even frightening for some people. We should acknowledge that, welcome them and offer them help along the way. We all want FOSS to gain more traction, and gatekeeping isn’t the way. How about a new community for Linux news?

Newbies need a place to hang out at, so that’s OK for them to post something like that in this community, IMO.

But I, too, have been growing increasingly tired of beginner posts, which ultimately led to the creation of !gnulinux@lemm.ee

Feel free to pay it a visit if you wish to filter out at least some of such content.

P.S. The timing of your post is almost the same of that I made the community. Did you post here because you saw the promo or was it just a coincidence?

    From the sidebar

Posts must be relevant to operating systems running the Linux kernel. GNU/Linux or otherwise.

Nothing there saying it’s specifically for Linux News.

At this point, I’m half expecting someone to announce a “linux_circlejerk” community for all those posts being complained about today, to balance out the already newly formed “gnulinux” community where none of it should go.

Oh look, yet another fucking post complaining about new users posting about their experiences switching to Linux. This should be a welcoming community welcoming to all Linux users new and old.

Nah, I disagree. I think it’s a general place to hang out and talk. And the community name and description don’t include the word ‘news’. There are other communities for that.

We’d have 1 post every two weeks and little to no engagement if this was about news only. Use a different community or a RSS feedreader for news.

Initially I agreed with OP, but while reading the replies I realized that I am wrong. I should not be going to generalized communities expecting specialized posts.

It would be like going to “funny” and only expecting new jokes.

I’ll move on and try to find something better aligned with my needs.
