I love Linux just like the next guy and have had several installations of NixOS to toy around.
I confess I was taken by suprise to stumble across the linked article and am not sure what to make of it.
Was someone more closely involved and can shed some light into this? Because, to be honest, I don’t feel very informed on that matter and what to make of it…
That article was so bad I’m inclined to believe the opposite is true…
I don’t know anything about NixOS, but this kind of thing can’t be unfamiliar to anyone who has been paying attention over the last ~10 years.
Eric S. Raymond was right: http://esr.ibiblio.org/?p=6918
That article is gold. The blog stopped in 2021 though.
Good for Nix! Horrible article though lmao
Stopped reading after “Lunduke”.
This read and feels like right wing propaganda, describing antifa as a violent terrorist group who claims responsibility for riots is almost funny.
A cursory search only brought up this same article copy-pasted to 4 different websites starting in June, and zero other mentions anywhere else of topic outside links to those 4 articles.
I’m not familiar with Lunduke. Could you elaborate?
Lunduke used to be decently popular in the Linux space. He worked for openSUSE and did a yearly “Linux Sucks” presentation about things Linux could improve on.
But many think he’s went off the deep end in recent years. Anti-vax, US election denying, basically against anything “woke”.
He’s an old time Linux guy who went off the deep end and became a conspiracy theorist. He’s one of those people who cries about things “becoming political” just because people decide to make a statement about being inclusive of LGBT folks in their code of conduct.
He’s also been caught just straight up lying about things in his various “investigations.”
Here’s a long video on some of it if you are interested: Video on Lunduke
I hadn’t seen any of his talks or content in a while so I was pretty sad to see how he stood on the recent Godot bans (shockingly opening GitHub issues containing slurs directed at the developers gets you banned from interacting with their project! Who’da thunk it?) and then seeing his comment section full of varying levels of dogwhistle to the rhetoric
Nico is someone I respect. Although I’m not a Qt/KDE guy, his videos are pretty good.
NixOS has a Nazi problem, given their record of horribly betraying their vulnerable community members, including PoCs and LGBTQ+ folks. By the way, this guy Bryan Lunduke is one of those QAnon crazies. This is one of the many reason why I left NixOS and moved to Guix. Good for NixOS though, although I’ll not be going back.
By the way, this guy Bryan Lunduke is one of those QAnon crazies.
Thanks, that’s why my internal red flags went up. Was confused why he was kind of defending the hyprland dev.
The guy is a nazi trying to pull off some utterly stupid rethoric of “oh noes the evil trans people are coming to discriminate against us and replace us”.
I’ve never seen something so absurd and would advise the writer to go seek help.
What I’m seeing is a guy who panics because he’s a transphobic piece of shit and is seeing that the world is changing and he won’t be allowed to be discriminatory as much as before. And he’s using the typical crap of “why not sit and talk” that nazis love to use. “Why do you censor my nazi opinions instead of talking about why we should kill black people or not?” would be a similar line.
Ofc I know it’s not meant to be literal, but talking about killing black people or not is too direct. The subjects people like this usually want to talk about tend to be more layered, e.g. “what should we do about the Jew problem” so that if you take the bait you’ll implicitly accept that “the Jew problem” exists to begin with.
Oh wow. That article is “full” of “scare quotes”. Best way to show you don’t “agree” with something.
I’m a bit out of the “loop”. Has “Lunduke” “gone off too Hogwarts”, if you catch my “drift”.
Pretty much yeah
“NixOS project” did not call anyone nazis, there was no “purge”, this article is clickbait and ragebait. What one contributor, however prolific, says, doesn’t represent the entire project (even though I somewhat agree with him here - there are sadly some bigots in the community).
Nobody forced Eelco (the founder of Nix) to “abdicate”, but there was indeed pressure to step down as the de-facto BDFL put on him by various people. He’s respected as an engineer, architect, maintainer and mentor, but his community management skills were perceived to be lacking, and there were other perceived issues in the community - which boiled down to the fact that a lot of contributors didn’t feel like they could influence the direction of the project. Note that he’s not expelled from the project in any way, he’s still a maintainer of Nix itself, which AFAIU from my interactions with him is what interests him the most, and he’s more or less happy to leave administrative/community stuff to other people.
Then began a process to establish a new governance structure. Currently, we’re up to a stage where there’s now formal community values and a new constitution for the project. There’s an election happening right now, with all active contributors able to become candidates or vote (although the deadline for candidate nominations has passed, so now we can only vote).
Ugh, but that’s boring! Can’t write an exciting article with facts like that! —Lunduke, probably
Your three paragraphs were more informative than the entire screed of that “article.” Good luck to Nix and the rest. I hope they get better documentation out of the changing of hands, because I think that’s the biggest thing holding them back from wider adoption.
Thanks! The documentation team is busy working on it right now :) You can check out https://nix.dev and https://wiki.nixos.org - both are relatively new. There are also lots of improvements in developer documentation for Nix and nixpkgs in the last year.
TL;DR: politics… yay…
The Hyprland creator was banned, by a Red Hat employee, from the Free Desktop project after a perceived lack of reverence for “Trans” activities and “pronouns”.
This is not accurate. The hyprland dev was banned for being a total and unapologetic asshole, and that pattern of behavior hasn’t stopped (see his “fair and balanced critique” of Cosmic).
What? Discrimination against cis people? What in the liberal brainrot is this nonsense? This was clearly written by some nutjob
In other words, NixOS is based
