This is just about everything I have on my phone. I’m on a FairPhone 4 running /e/OS. What’s your load out like?
I’m looking for a new keyboard. Glad for suggestions :D
-
Chip Defense. A little FOSS tower defense game.
-
KDE Connect. Tool to transfer files to another device, or vice versa.
-
Trail Sense. Nice lightweight app that does a variety of things, but I mostly use it for white noise.
-
Organic Maps. I try to use it instead of Google Maps whenever possible.
-
FitoTrack. Amazing app to keep logs of your workouts, or motorcycling trips as I use it. Shows you where you went, how fast you want, and how many calories burned where applicable.
Edit: Tried to count down from 5 to 1 as this is my top 5 apps from F-droid, but the auto bullet thing is counting up instead

- Mull (hardened firefox fork)
- Organic maps (maps + directions)
- Track & Graph (for tracking trends/habits)
- WebApps (running sandboxed websites)
Just begun exploring using:
- Immich (selfhosted photos solution)
- ReThink (local dns/firewall tracking blocker)
Btw, I believe Obsidian isn’t FOSS.
Obsidian isn’t FOSS. I highly recommend Logseq but keep in mind they require CLA signing for contributions
Nextcloud News I like for RSS since it fetches the full text article. Obtainium lkke others mentioned is a must have for me.
megladon for mastodon
I love Thumb Key, it’s a very unique and actively developed keyboard app.
it took a bit to learn but now its great
Definitely requires time, took me about 3 weeks to get as fast as I was on a standard layout.
I use a few apps from the SimpleMobileTools suite. They aren’t full FOSS, they have basic and pro versions where the basic version is GPL3 and the proprietary extended features cost a few bucks. The basic FOSS tools are still decent, if barebones.
The suite includes:
- a calculator
- a phone dialer
- a music player
- a calendar
- a photo gallery (with basic editor)
- an audio recorder
- a flashlight
- a clock
- an app launcher
- an SMS messenger
- a camera
- a keyboard
- a note taker
- a file manager
- a contact book
- a simple painting canvas
I use the gallery and file manager the most. Though admittedly I threw a couple bucks their way for the proprietary extensions. It’s not FOSS, but if it was going to be proprietary, I think it’s one of the fairest deals in software these days. Better than another bloody subscription model, or holding the ad-free experience hostage behind a paywall.
But they sell their app to ZippoApps which gonna add ads and tracker and You have to get subscribtion to remove ads. You can switch to Fossify fork of SimpleMobile tools.
Thank you for letting me know about this.
No Problem
That’s disappointing :/ do you have a source you could share?
Also, I’m confused about the versions available. From the comments here, there seems to be a free and paid version. But if I go to FDroid there’s obly the “pro version” there. That’s what I’ve been using and I see no ads. Where is the other one at?
If you install from F-Droid you are good to go it have pro features already but if you have play store then don’t update at all. And maybe source code of SMT app will be archived in future.
Obsidian isn’t FOSS
What’s FNG? Fluid navigation gestures? Is that FOSS? Can you share a link to the codebase? Can’t find it
It’s one of my favorites. It lets you set swipe zones that perform actions or open apps on the left roght and bottom edges. You can put up to 4 on each edge with long and short swipes doubling them, so you can have up to 24! It’s not maintained any more, but you can find a .apk and install it manually
My favourites so far.
- PlainApp
- Rethink
- Audile (Shazam FOSS)
- Notally
- OpenBoard (keyboard)
- Material Files
- QKSMS
- OsMand~
- Forecastie
- Obtainium
- Newpipe
- Cromite (Bromite fork)
- Monocles translator
Not open-source but the only gallery I found without trackers:
- Gallery made by Greensoft infotech
THANK YOU for antennapod!!! What an incredibly beautiful app, I’m so impressed!!
I was so excited when I discovered this app. To me it’s one of the most perfect apps. I wish I could use it on desktop.
I’m running openboard’s fork by helium! It supports glide typing, if you download a library! There are instructions in the app 🙂
I also recently found sayboard (available on fdroid), which has been working WAY better than I expected as a speech-to-text alternative 🙂
Newpipe, for watching youtube videos without ads or tracking
Openboard keyboard for the one feature I can never be without again: moving the cursor by swiping left or right on the spacebar, it’s a godsend for selecting stuff with my wide fingers
I’d suggest Feeder for RSS. I haven’t found a perfect feed reader, but Feeder is at least no-nonsense.
My MVP FLOSS apps are
- Kiss launcher
- K-9 (email)
- Fennec (slight improvement over Firefox)
- VLC (media player)
- Antennapod (podcasts)
- Voice (audio books)
- Newpipe (YouTube without the Google snooping)
- Markor (notes)
- Authenticator (two factor authentication)
- DAVx5 (calendar and contacts sync)
- ICSx5 (adds ICS events to calendar)
- Syncthing (serverless file sync)
- Tusky (Mastodon)
All of those are from F-droid; I’m slowly moving to Obtainium from Aurora store to keep a couple of non-FLOSS apps updated.
You should try Mull and Fedilab
I’d recommend Mull instead of Firefox or Fennec (the deblobbed version) since it’s hardened.
It’s basically a Librewolff analogue for mobile
