Trying to close an obnoxious ad
It should be law that every device should require a dedicated Escape/Exit/Cancel/Close button of some sort…
they already have that (the Back button), guess how effective it is
I guess iphones don’t have it but nobody uses those anyway :P
I mean like a dedicated physical hardware button, to go alongside the power and volume buttons.
How would that be better than a soft-button or gesture that’s always available? (I use gestures, and it’s always possible to swipe from the side to go Back)
Cuz that’s software side, and they can always reprogram that as a future forced update.
Hell, I just got fucked over on a new phone by the manufacturer because they decided to force a home screen launcher update on me, without my permission, and without even informing me.
And yes, I disabled automatic updates as far as I knew. Still they janked me, and even a factory reset won’t remove this new fucked up DDU Launcher home screen.
I’m about to sling that phone into a brick wall, because they backdoored their version of Android.
Sooo… Why would I trust a software solution to a physical, legally required physical exit button?
Can you program hardware buttons via software too?🤔 Maybe I’m wrong
You most certainly can! You are not wrong at all.
On Android, you can alter things a lot more than on an iPhone though so you can very likely remap both to your liking if you’re tech savvy.
In the early days of Android I completely revamped my UI with custom ROMS and a tool called Gravity Box. It was somewhat similar to Gestures except a menu would fan out from your thumb and you could do all sorts of shit from it.
Even though custom ROMs are an option, you shouldn’t have to jump through flaming tech hoops to get the basic generic options you want. Most people don’t know anything about any of that and ain’t gonna bother anyways.
Yes, and sometimes no. Try turning my mother’s phone off via the power button, it doesn’t work, because Samsung in their infinite wisdom made that the sleep/wake button and the assistant button.
I had to literally Google how to turn it off. Gotta hold Volume Down and Power at the same time to bring up the power/reset buttons.
So yes, they can be programmed, usually by the manufacturer though. Not like you can expect your mother or most any other average citizen to install, maintain, or configure a custom firmware.
And even if you do set everything the way you want, the next forced update is likely to revert to whatever the manufacturer thinks is good for you.
Settings > advanced features > side button > press and hold?
Can vouch, it’s the same for all three of the Samsung phones I have.
On Android there was until gestures, which works fine. You can also just completely close it, which is what I do when I see an ad 9/10 times anyways right before uninstalling it forever and finding something that doesn’t use shady ads.
