Which decentralized social media do you use? And why?

Interested particularly in comparing Minds, Deso, and Bastyon. - There is not much information on the web in this regard!

This is the first I’ve heard of them, and after looking them up, I find they’re cryptocurrency/blockchain projects. This makes me think the likelihood of them being misguided software designs, outright scams, or both, is fairly high.

Also, at least one of carries a high volume of far-right politics, according to articles cited in Wikipedia.

    No thanks.

If one of them were to eventually evolve into something appealing, I expect we would see substantive discussion about it in the various privacy and software development circles that follow such things. For now, I choose none of them.

Thank you for looking them up! They have been recommended to me by friends. But I will stick with Lemmy and Mastodon.

Crypto/blockchain is the kiss of the death for the legitimacy of any project.

You just know the whole thing will built around pump-and-dumps or quick rug pulls.

This confuses me… I thought that a project being attached to a crypto/Blockchain was a good thing? Because things you create on the Blockchain stay yours and are secure and the project can somehow self fund itself. All very confusing, but something like that. Are you saying that ALL Projects built on a Blockchain are suspicious? Very interesting

I do think blockchain/crypto is a massive red flag.

From a product perspective, the focus will always be on “pump and dump” not the actual product/service. See “web 3.0 gaming” for a perfect example.

Not sure what you mean about “staying yours” and “secure”.

Thank you, I had somehow forgotten about Friendica! And it is on the fediverse so it’s a win win

Thank you, I think I will stick with Lemmy and Mastodon, possibly try Friendica at some point too.

As do I… I was meaning in addition to Lemmy. I was under the impression that the above mentioned sites are more of a “Facebook alternative” with a bigger lean towards photos of your resent holiday and that Lemmy is more of a Reddit alternative/done right.

I’m new to all this, so please feel free to correct me 🙃. I’m changing all my services to decentralized / FOSS etc. a lot to learn.
