I just learned about the Fediverse in May. I now have a Lemmy account, and a Mastadon account.
I’m not interested in /kbin, as I have no interest in facebook, but something caught my eye. SpaceHey.
Problem is, with mainstream things, you can google and find out which places are safe, private, not stealing your info…or you can find out that they’re facebook, and stealing EVERYBODYS personal data. Even people who’ve never signed up.
I have less info on SpaceHey. And since I figure you guys know what’s going on, maybe you can give it a yay or nay. I’m also interested in Peertube.
I’ve seen a few of their profiles, and when they say they made it just like 2008 myspace, they’re pretty much wrong. This isn’t 2008 myspace. By 2008 myspace was still a social network, but they were making major changes to the interface.
The profiles I saw looked more like a customized myspace profile from 2006. It was just a huge difference, but I was there.
Also, I’m unclear if it’s because I have no account, but the profile display pictures don’t seem to have any way to click them. You used to be able to click them, and go into a page of many pictures. The one on your profile we just called your “default photo”. It was the one to represent YOUR profile. I’m also noticing that nobodies default photo is their own face. It’s all anime and drawn picture art. That’s not in the spirit on 2006 myspace. Your default pic was the one that you thought made you look the best.
So youngin’s, don’t think the idea of super close face shots, or above the head looking down shots to hide your personal body issues are some new concept. We were doing it in the dying days of 56k connections. Back when some of you were learning your shapes and colors. We were debating if that picture was default worthy, and wondering if we should re-arrange our top 8. Then getting offended when our profile was dropped from one of our friends top 8s, or moved down a rank.
Long before there was “facebook official” there was “top 8 worthy”.
So, is there anything bad I should know about SpaceHey, other than the massive amount of nostolgia it’s hitting me with?
Frendica is Facebook, not Kbin
Wait…then whats kbin? I was told that was a facebook clone.
Kbin is like a mix of reddit and twitter.
Welp. Now I have another platform to investigate later…
Beware that the devolvement of Kbin is stalled, Mbin is a more active fork.
Which one has a more active userbase?
Since they are both part of the fedivers, that’s a bit less of a concern. Kbin, mbin, and Lemmy users can all subscribe to each other’s communities/magazines/sublemmies.
Kbin is analogous to old.Reddit.com
Well that sounds lovely.
Edit: AND I learned a new word today!
SpaceHey isn’t even decentralized, let alone federated. This community isn’t for people just to spam their favourite social media. It’s for talk about the Fediverse.
But the OP had a legitimate question, they don’t know, as neither do I. So this is far from Spam.
See? This is why I posted. I thought it was decentralized, and part of the fediverse, but I knew nothing of it other than a few profiles I visited.
When you don’t know something, you ask. Now as condesending as your reply was, I did at least learn from it. You know that phrase “This ain’t my first rodeo”? Well, when it comes to the fediverse, this IS my first rodeo. I don’t fully know what I’m doing yet, but I know I like it. Therefore I want to learn. You learn by research, and asking questions. Well I researched by googling, checking them out, reading opinions. Well all the opinions I found are from 3 years ago. In social media terms, thats like having a childhood friend you havent seen since you were 10, and reconnect with when you’re 40. A lot can change.
So, I asked here.
What made you think it was decentralised and part of the Fediverse?
I searched google “is there a fediverse version of myspace?”
The top result was a reddit post asking for a completely customizable fediverse version of myspace from 3 years ago, and he mentioned spacehey and kbin.
I THOUGHT I knew what kbin was (turns out it’s not a facebook clone), and I’d never heard of spacehey.
After reading their privacy policy, I had concerns. So I turned here, and as it turns out I was wrong the whole way through. It’s not a fediverse app, or even decentralized.
I was thinking each profile was going to be a self hosted instance. It seems that may not be the case.
I kind of want a myspace clone like that.
Thank you for making me discover the site! Regarding Peertube, it’s more complicated, it’s better to use Piped to continue using YouTube…
