Looks at date… meh. We’ve been through this, OP. Many years ago. In great detail. Meaning, among other things, plenty of lazy outrage posting like this.

And Torvalds has my full respect for facing the music and coming out a better person. Not many people are able to admit they’ve been wrong about something, and even fewer are able to actually do something about it.

Still, without the old Torvalds we wouldn’t have memes like this one either.

Outrage bait? I thought this was praising Linus for being so passionate about protecting the users.

This mail is 13 years old, and doesn’t seem relevant for anything? This post seems like a lazy attempt at shit-stirring.

I’m one of the 10000 to discover it today. I did not know about it. That’s it. Feel free to downvote.

But what did you learn? What are we supposed to learn? Did you get any context, like how he actually went to anger management therapy later?

Or is this just guffawing and gawping at an old angry email from a tech celebrity?

I’ve never seen it and found it entertaining that someone so knowledgeable dressed-down someone who messed up something they’re passionate about.

Was he a dick about it? Yes. But it doesn’t make me like him less, even without knowing he’s gotten better about it recently.

He’s 100% right and was only a little less professional than I think was deserved. A little too focused on the personal rather than the commit and wrongheadedness of the email itself. Anyone could submit a bad patch.

Was there a similarly harsh invective sent to whomever approved the PR in the first place? I’d bet so.

That is how I read it as well.

Also, Torvalds went through some serious soul-searching between then and now and really came out on top of it. My full respect.

The difference between being technically right and knowing how to communicate.
There’s like a 100 different ways to reject a PR without referring to a contributor as a moron.

I think lately Linus learned how to do it correctly without going on rants.

Yep. This is from 2012 and we went through whatever OP is trying to do here sometime between then and maybe 5 years ago - in great detail. And Torvalds really came out on top of it.

I really don’t enjoy Linus’ content without context I have to admit.

He was an absolute dipshit back then and he’s one of the few people I’ve read about who not only acknowledged that but also put effort into changing it - and succeeded.

Yeah the newer mails are not as funny to third parties anymore but I’m really happy for him and especially the kernel devs around him.

      💯

Not sure I’d have characterised him as an “absolute dipshit” even back then, though.

Understandable, he was right very often and “only” his tone was…unfiltered. but I ignore the “was right” part when using that phrasing :)

I’d like to imagine that this would be close to the phrasing Linus himself would choose, although I could be off of course!

Yeah, there’s a big difference between just insulting someone, or insulting someone based on clear arguments. AFAIK Torvalds always did the latter. Again, not saying that makes it OK though.

Honestly, even if Linus is completely in the right, this kind of behaviour is not ok. Good that his therapy took him out of that mindspace.
