the real Mr and Mrs Smith
It’s almost like no one cares about the Olympics
Who is downvoting you? I wouldn’t think that Lemmy would be into athletics or patriotism.
It’s just a stupid and unnecessary comment.
And what has patriotism to do with it?
It is mixed feelings about it. I don’t really care for it myself, and it puts countries in debt hosting them. There is always something that goes horribly wrong. I think every Olympic game, has had problems, small or huge.
Turkish Dirty Harry > Spring Break Predator
Huh? That guy is cool because of his lore and his attitude. We don’t care if he is male, female an alien or whatever. We don’t care if he won a medal, a diploma or a 5$ discount on a supermarket.
He is relevant because this guy went shooting into an olimpic event with a normal guy vibe wearing his prescription glasses and one hand in the pocket, while other olimpic teams wear all kind of complex sighting aparatus for this events. Plus his story lore of how he became olimpic shooter is hilarious.
His teamate could be Erdogan, Beyonce, Taylor Swift. NOT RELEVANT.
So what? He has a female in his team? Okay.
He has a female in his team?
I know this is increasingly accepted, but ‘female’ is actually an adjective. You could say ‘has a female athlete’ or even just ‘has a lady’, but the current wording is a bit off.
‘female’ is also an adjective
FIFY
Normally “female” is more used in clinical settings or about not-human animals. One reason it gives off incel energy is it reduces a person to what genitals they have.
reduces a person to what genitals they have
Fine by me, specially in this case.
So do all other categorisation terms, which on top of that, group them with others in the same category and help the people who’d blame everything on a category of people. Specially the “-ism” -> “-ist” categorisations.
I’d rather have scientific categorisation than a social one, that would enable dialogues such as:
A: Define a “woman”, you senator/judge/other public personality.
B: … I think I am not qualified to … *more gibberish* … ( because I need to be politically correct). And that’s probably why people prefer this choice of words. To prevent the “Cis vs Trans - you dare assume their gender” bullies from finding them as easy prey. And over time, it becomes second nature.
I know this is increasingly accepted, but …
To be fair, in English most adjectives can also be used as nouns. I suppose I should have said that in this context, using it as an adjective is inappropriate.
I thought it was just his normal guy vibe without the shooting glasses. Pretty sure the hand in the pocket is common and I haven’t heard anything about a hilarious back story.
First I read about it from a comment was that he was trying to prove his Ex-Wife wrong that he can make something of himself. But it didn’t mention is that he joined the Gendarmerie of Turkey, which is a police type force in rural areas and other places in the country.
I don’t want to lower his achievements but he’s just a cop who obviously did well in his shooting practice and turned that into a silver medal. He isn’t a hitman like the memes are saying.
Pretty sure that ex wife thing is just a meme. He’s got competition results dating back more than 20 years from a look at his wikipedia page
This man showed up to compete in the Olympics after his son was assaulted by a wild pack of turkish trans furry democrats. His Turkish sons last words were"Baba, şimdi dinlenmem gerek. Bu trans demokrat kürklerin bugün kazandı ama sen benim ölümümü intikamını almak için Olimpiyatlarda kazanacaksın, baba. Bana ya özgürlük ver ya da ölüm." -New York Post
Gendarmerie is part of the military, higher than police. And he was a sergeant. He’s part of both the national team and the national army team.
It is not really “higher” than police and it is not regular military. The gendarmerie in Turkey is responsible for policing outside cities, they are part of the military, but they are subordinate to the interior ministry during peace times (regular military answers to the defence ministry).
Compared to what it takes to become a policeman in the US, it’s definitely a higher level of training. Hard to find a direct US equivalent.
It was literally a team event and one of the things that makes the bit funny is how “he” won silver. In fact, that’s the entire thing this story hinges on, performing well.
In a team event.
Nice self-reporting your misogyny though, and I’m sorry your mind fails to draw a single independent conclusion from this meme.
When I shot in highschool it was a team event while also individual. So your team’s score is the summation of the individuals scores (pre-finals).
(Finals is like an extra portion for the top few competitors. Your score in finals is added and that’s your total. It was added to make the sport more spectator friendly. When I shot it was just 10 extra shots but shortly after I stopped it was changed to top 8 shooting one shot at a time and lowest shot gets eliminated. I believe this is still the case based on pictures I saw of the two finalists shooting side by side alone.)
So it’s possible he won silver as individual and the team didn’t win or also got silver. I haven’t actually looked into the Olympic rules or results but that’s how it was when I shot competitively.
This isn’t me being misogynistic but had his teammate done better they’d have won gold, she brought the score down, he actually shot better than both of the winners.
This is not to say she wasn’t qualified for this, in fact I believe her previous track record is better than his
I thought it hinged on the ‘baller move’, then getting a silver.
Since you seem invested in the Olympics, what was his score?
Oh you watch the Olympics name all the medals 🤓 vibe
Gold medal, silver medal and bronze medal
Damn you got stamped on for simply explaining why people cared about A and not B.
Hilarious place.
Yeah, we should never consider reasoning as a human quality. Social media platforms tend to remove that. I thought Lemmy was different. Well I guess it depends on the instance.
I had never seen that many down votes on Lemmy, good job
This seems to have triggered you out of nowhere. You okay?
I thought it was to dunk on the Asian teams
Great integration into that meme
So our king has a queen!
Why not show the gold medalists… Seeing as most never saw them, and they’ve got zero publicity compared to others.
Because they’re inferior in the minds of many.
Silver almost best them with no equipment.
Because the Olympics aren’t good for anything but ruining nations and memes.
Are they not the people with steampunk glasses in the memes?
Nope, it was Serbia’s Damir Mikec and Zorana Arunovic.
Damir Mikec’s eye wear looked more like something made from lego technic:
…and he’s gotten no love for having beaten all these meme based characters.
I feel like this is a great statment on how “meritocracy” works IRL
Wouldn’t they have gotten gold if she didn’t drag the entire team down lol?
Turkey would have actually gotten a shiny platinum medal if there were no ffffffeeeeeeemales on the team.
Power couple!
Bottom left he really looks like he hasn’t smiled in 20 years and the photographer told him to
So Turks just like to shoot with their hands in their pockets, I guess?
I think that’s just how the shooting stance works. Hooking your hand in your pocket prevents it from moving and messing with your aim.
And the other one NOT giving a high five…!?
They’re only allowed to use one hand, so the competitors always have their off hand tucked in or hooked onto their clothes so that arm can be relaxed and ignored.
Got it, I’m honestly just riffing off another comment I saw a day ago that mentioned his hand in his pocket, I didn’t know they all did it. 🤣
the joke is no one making memes about the olympics watches them
At first I thought he was a divorcee just trying to get his dog back but now that I know he’s a divorcee spending time with his daughter I like the story even more.
